President-elect Donald Trump has selected former Marine General James Mattis to be his Secretary of Defense according to reports from the Washington Post’s Dan Lamothe and CNN’s Jamie Gangel.


Trump transition team spokesman Jason Miller quickly reacted to the Washington Post report on Twitter, asserting that the president-elect had not made a decision. He did not deny the report.


“Mad Dog Mattis,” as he is known by soldiers who served under his command, is a popular leader among many who serve in America’s military, largely because of his history of colorful quotes and his no nonsense approach to war.


He resigned during the Obama administration, as some reports suggested that he was pressured out of his job by civilian government bureaucrats.


“Pentagon insiders say that he rubbed civilian officials the wrong way,” reported Foreign Policy reporter Thomas Ricks at the time.


If confirmed, Mattis will now serve as Trump’s chief military strategist, leading the ongoing war against Islamic state terrorists as well as the fight in Afghanistan.

President-elect Donald Trump kicked off his post-election "Thank You" tour Thursday by announcing that he would nominate retired Marine Gen. James Mattis as secretary of defense.

At a rally in Cincinnati, Trump described Mattis as "one of our great, great generals" and added that a formal announcement would be made Monday, "so don't tell anybody."


"They say he's the closest thing to Gen. George Patton that we have," Trump told the crowd,"and it's about time. It's about time."


The 66-year-old Mattis, known by his nickname, "Mad Dog," retired from the military in 2013 after serving as the commander of the U.S. Central Command. His appointment to run the Pentagon would require a waiver from Congress, since federal law requires military personnel to be retired for seven years before taking a civilian position in the in the Department of Defense.
