Economic authoritarianism has now arrived; sorry, there is no other way to put it. I am reminded of Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Roosevelt, both of whom used the power of the federal government to intimidate and even crush legitimate, law-abiding businesses for failing to abide by their political demands. This is a disgrace, and we should all object to it. It concerns me to no end that there are putative Republicans and conservatives who rally around such un-American and destructive strong-arm tactics. And the fact that it is declared by a recent convert to the Republican Party, as opposed to a Democrat, doesn’t excuse it; indeed, it should be even more alarming.

On state TV in Russia they occasionally show Putin rebuking factory managers for poor performance or business forecasts. Putin likes to micro-manage and it works for him.

Odd that LEVIN uses two Democratic presidents as his base point.

Wilson was an isolationist and could not see the writing on the wall with WWI.
He was entirely weak.

Roosevelt saw what needed to be done with the Depression and WWII.

Roosevelt saw what needed to be done with the Depression and WWII.

Roosevelt LENGTHENED the Depression with his cockamamie theories and schemes. Turned it from "The Depression" to "The Great Depression". Sort of like Obama did with the 2008 recession.

But at least FDR did WWII mostly right. He told his generals to come up with a plan to win the Atlantic and Pacific theaters, and list everything they needed to win it (not just "to send a message"). He figured out how to get it to them, and turned them loose.

Nice the atom bomb came along when it did. We still would have won if it hadn't, but with a million more Allied casualties, and several million Japanese. We did them a favor by dropping the Bomb - fewer of them got killed than if we hadn't, and the war ended a year earlier.

I might have to hand you that one, but he did create 'shovel ready jobs' that were promised by Obama
and never materialized.

Invading Japan was seen as a disaster-in-waiting. Allies would have prevailed, but at what cost?

It works for him because no one is allowed to oppose him in public. Or at least do it more than one.

An estimated 1M US personnel. IIRC, an estimated 2+M Japanese.

I read estimates as high as 5 million jap casualties, due to the fact that they were preparing to use women and kids as cannon fodder to slow the allies down when they stormed the beaches... showed them how to shoot the rifle, but not much more than that.
