I remember staring at our black and white tv in our living room, and hearing the words "GOD SPEED JOHN GLENN!"

Years later, in 1966. I found myself aboard my first Navy ship, off the coast of Africa, the Island named Ascension, where we waited for the launch, and recovery of an Unmanned Gemini capsule that was a test of the Heat Shield. And as the first navy ship to return the capsule to Canaveral...we got to see John Glenn, standing on the pier with others.
For your information. The Ship was the Former USS LaSalle LPD-3, which later became the Great White Ghost, of the Arabian Coast, and was homeported in Bahrain until it was decommissioned.
