So some nitwit - ELECTED nitwit has this GREAT idea! Let's RAISE PROPERTY TAXES and use the money to give vouchers to the people we just raised-the-taxes-on; and the vouchers will be good ONLY for the people to "donate" to a political candidate.

What the actual fuck is going on?

That city needs a revolution. The good people of WA need to un-fuck themselves and take back their land from the fascist marxists liberal assholes in charge.

Seattle politicians have it figured out: The city is now giving taxpayers their own money back, on the condition they "donate" that cash back to political candidates.

The new program, which was funded by a property tax hike and approved at the ballot box in 2015, launched this week. More than a half-million registered voters in Seattle will receive $100 worth of taxpayer-financed “democracy vouchers” that can be used to contribute to a political candidate of their choosing.

The catch: That money has to be used in this way, or it goes back into the same government program.

The city described the first-in-the-nation program as a way “to encourage more Seattle residents to donate to campaigns and/or run for elected positions themselves.” Each registered voter will get four $25 vouchers to distribute as they see fit.

The program is funded by a property tax increase worth $30 million over 10 years — an estimated $11.50 per year for the average homeowner, according to the city. Wayne Barnett, executive director of the Seattle Ethics and Elections Commission, says it has a budget of $3 million annually for the next 10 years.

While the vouchers are being mailed out, no candidates yet have qualified to get the money.

“No candidates have qualified yet, but it is still early in the process,” said Barnett, who is responsible for administering and auditing issuance of the “democracy vouchers.”

City candidates are potentially eligible, but must agree to spending limits and must get 400 donations on their own of $10 each.

The voucher measure originally was approved with 60 percent of the vote in 2015. But the success in Seattle could not be repeated statewide.

That is the perfect depiction of a "circle jerk". "We will give you a very minute portion of your tax dollars but you MUST give that portion to those of us who took it from you in the first place."

If the citizens of Seattle voted for that, they deserve it....

What a stunningly idiotic idea and it passed? Strike Seattle off of 'good places to live.'

No just kidding. Seattle is beautiful except for the people who elect assholes and socialists driving their economy and liberty into the ground. It's a cess pool of progressive politics.

Thank you for this informative post. I get a substantial number of contacts to work in Washington state. You just reminded my why I never even consider them. I will just continue on in the gated community places right here in Texas, thank you very much.

If I read the OP correctly, the people of Seattle actually voted 'yes' on an additional assessment to their property taxes? Insane. I would NOT want to live around folks that 'needed to require' political donations. Egads!

Surely this violates election law in some way?

It's just a codified example of Dems doing whatever they can to get their lazy constituents out to vote. I guess the pack of cigarettes and cash they use in Philly wasn't even enough.

As far as messed up cities, I'm not sure that Seattle is worse than San Fran.

I think using SF as comparison is likely a very good one. Seattle, like SF, appears to be overwhelmingly D, thus the idea of using the nanny to force discipline appeals. It's a basic assumption that 'others' of like-minded, but cheap folks don't voluntarily donate to the D of choice. Government is always the solution is a basic tenet.
