I've been wanting to do this anyway...

I bought the PRO version this evening - thanks to KarlMarx and his gracious donation. :)

While there are many options available, like adding like/dislike and other things... But really all I wanted out of this was the ability to UNTHANKS. Meaning, if you accidentally thank someone for a post, you can quickly fix it. :)

(not that I am gonna do either).

How about setting it up so that we can only Thank people if we also reply to the thread he's in?

So many threads die because nobody actually replies.

lets be for real here. I was teasing Jim because last I checked he is still breathing. We got thanks, rep, ignore, PM .. and what do they really matter? They're freakin; toys. PLAY with them. Like everything else, each of us use them for different reasons. I use it as a means or recognition as much as much as anything else. I have and never had anyone on ignore.

Play with the toys or don't. Jimbob likes to screw with everything he can get his hands on electronically. So let him play in little private happy land.

I've been toying with this pro version, I just enabled the "like" portion as well. So if you don't want to thank someone for a great post, and prefer to like it... for example, I post some cute pictures... thanks seems weird maybe, but you can like it!!

And with this, like the other, you can UN-like if you hit it by mistake. :)

The only option I see with this software is to 'require a click' from someone in a specific forum - meaning they must thank the OP in order to reply, and that would suck! I'll peek around and even shoot a message to the developer and see if that's possible what you mention.

My 2 cents, shouldn't happen. There are many times I'll thank someone because I agree or it makes me laugh. No comment from me is needed, thus I thank and move on.

Freedom of expression should include the freedom to abstain from speaking.

Agreed. I wouldn't force folks to click. I also saw another add-on at an unmentionable place in the past - where the member starting the thread could list names, and block others from their own threads. I don't like that either.

I like Doug a lot, wish he were here more. I read his site a lot, but don't feel able to participate much, too many socks. I don't like to have to figure out who is who. It's not easy to figure out who's trolling, using sarcasm, etc. It's hard enough with folks you know, including their normal position on things to not misinterpret.

Doug? the guy that runs the Politics forum? Hell. last I checked I had 3 or 4 accounts there. However, nobody ever has to guess who I am. I don't hide well on message boards. I just couldn't ever remember my account and I DID try to hide there. I don't know people by name unless they use their name. I don't talk to people' IIRC, that board is a haven for everyone I and/or Jim ran off USMB. That's why I can't go on it. They attack me like rats.

They make no sense. I can stay but can't use the name Gunny when once word got out every damned body knew who I was. And if you say the name :Gunny" you are banned for talking about a banned member. And yes, I was just trying to hide and play videos. I didn't want anything to do with anyone. The blond woman that comes on here once a year outted me because of the songs I posted. I hear you. I fear some will just give a 'piss off' to anything they disagree with. Personally on that I'd consider the source.

I like the idea of possibly using for some of the troll posts or something I find offensive. Troll posts in my opinion don't require a response, offensive posts-let's say basic racism, I'd likely post a reply to.

Neg rep to me is basically 'I hate you,' it's personal. Thus, I don't do that or at least haven't for years, probably MaineMan?

I honestly pay little attention to it. Thanks is meant as a fix to the rep system. You weren't around when rep-whoring was the thing to do for lefties. And I mean no offense to you nor your politics. I am explaining a situation. I had to go in and completely re-do the settings on USMB to stop that crap. There ARE people who for some reason live for their messagboard rep and crylike babies over it.

Thanks WAS a lot easier until a certain knucklehead had to go and screw with it.:slap:

Exactly, my first 'piss off' received was for asking someone to expand on a statement they made (I wasn't even being sarcastic ) they didn't otherwise reply. To me that seems an awful lot like trolling - for it should be considered that they did nothing except quote the post made and reply with "Piss off." I don't understand why people want that feature.

THAT is why I don't like it. You can say what you want about me, but I have never neg repped you and won't tell you to piss off. Unless I say it to your face. And whoever wants to get pissed at me can, but it's a cheap tool to backstab people instead of confronting them.

Of course we got a laundry list of lefties that won't confront others. SO don't come whining to me about a tool tailored for YOU.

I can conceive of thanking a post because it is a stimulating one to debate with ... even if I strongly disagree with it. But I'm hardly likely to 'like' a post which opposes what I think is right !

I see your point to some extent, though I also can't agree. The simple fact of the matter is that the response anyone chooses to make to a post they see, is theirs to make (and for others to comprehend) ... and surely not for you to govern the detail of the response which is chosen.

The feature we're discussing can be used in a particular way according to the choice of the user. This is as it should be.

If you are really interested in this subject, try to find a Russian speaking friend of yours and look together with him at least through these issues.
Should you succeed to persuade him, viewing daily program '60 Minutes' on TV Russia-1 (available on the Internet).

It wasn't like we 'need' anything, I added it at request, and if kicked back enough, I can disable it. But until then - one can more or less disable it, receive zero notifications and nothing shows up on their postbit (which is the display when you post). Look at the bottom of this post....

I don't see the difference between thanking a post and liking a post. Seems like they serve the same function.

Example... Someone can "thank" me for my explanation to Noir, as it may be helpful, therefore the thanks. If I post a cute pic of a dog, someone can click 'like'. Are they extremely similar - yeps. And again, we're toying with it, and it can be disabled. I bought the PRO version of the thanks system solely for the ability to add AND delete thanks if someone did it accidentally. The ability to add the likes AND any new button is just a bonus.

Anyone who doesn't like it - go to your settings (VERY top right of the board). Scroll ALL the way to the bottom left and click on "DBTech Advanced Post/Thanks settings"...

Should you succeed to persuade him, viewing daily program '60 Minutes' on TV Russia-1 (available on the Internet).
You will discover a completely different world.

Example: little babies who think they have me on ignore. What a bunch of wimps. You all have one-sided statements but won't come out and defend them. Pussies.

LOL! You be funny. Had trouble with the sentence that advised to 'consider the source,' I guess.
I don't think I have a problem with understanding your advice to 'consider the source'. I am speaking about Russian tolerance to pluralism of opinions worked out by a lack of censorship in Russia. And I realize that it may sound strange for Americans.http://www.kolobok.us/smiles/standart/yes4.gif

Lack of censorship in Russia. Is this the joke of the day? Oh and tolerance? This post is better than an episode of World's Dumbest. I used to live right across the Black Sea from you and my dad spied on your not so brilliant tail ends. Want to run that one by me again?

You are definitely entitled to your opinion. But don't try and piss down my neck and tell me it's raining. And if you need a reference, it's from "The Outlaw Josey Wales".

Jim. Some members...who should remain nameless; DO HAVE AN OPTION if they dislike the Thanks System, or any other content here on DP. And that option would make many other members VERY, VERY, HAPPY.

They can just Go Away, or stop their WHINING.

I disabled the "piss off" portion of the system. I think a thanks or a like should be plenty enough. In addition to that, we also have the rep system which allows for both positive and negative. This removal wasn't for any person or it's usage. Just after seeing it as an option one too many times, it didn't seem like something we should be embracing, nor something that really fits with who we are.

File any complaints into Gunny's PM box. :)

Maybe this is reasonable. :slap:
