MOSCOW, January 12. /TASS/. The Russian authorities will react to the practical steps the incoming U.S. Administration will be making, not to the declarations the contents of which often stem from transitory calculus, Frants Klintsevich, first deputy chairman of defense and security committee in the upper house of Russian parliament said on Wednesday.
He said it in a comment on the statements that the nominated Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, made earlier on the same day in the course of hearings in the U.S. Senate.
Specifically, Tillerson said he was ready to support the proposals to furnish Ukraine with lethal weaponry and spoke in favor of keeping up sanctions against Russia. In addition, he said the U.S. should step up broadcasting spearheaded at Russia.
"Such statements don’t make one feel particularly optimistic but we’ve got accustomed to reacting to practical steps rather than words," Klintsevich said, adding that the Senate committee Tillerson was addressing expected the declarations of precisely that kind of him.

"Quite possibly, we should take account of the fact he said this answering specific questions at the Senate foreign policy committee, the members of which expected this type of assessments from him," the senator said.
As he mentioned a possible reaction from Moscow, Klintsevich said the Russian authorities were prepared to make steps towards meeting the U.S. halfway. "But to make steps towards the opposite party doesn’t mean to align oneself with it, to agree to one-sided concessions or to cede one’s positions," he said. "On the fundamental plane, we don’t have any grounds to revise our international policy or to scale down efforts as regards the maintenance of our own security," he said.

I'm sure that measured, cautious responses from your side are, and will be, all to the good.

A sincere wish to be constructive will also be of much use. So long as it doesn't come down to attempts to jockey for self-interest at the cost of the side you're being 'constructive' with .. ?

We'll see where all this leads, Balu.

The latest news I'm hearing is that Trump wants to keep sanctions against Russia in place, at least for the moment.

He's taking a line I think to be eminently sensible and prudent. Trump wants a partnership with Putin to deal with terrorism. Now ... Putin paints himself as anti-terrorist, so, you'd imagine this would present no difficulty for him. Nonetheless, as another thread here says, Russia is moving to NEGOTIATE with certain terrorist factions, notably Hamas ... so, it's little wonder, I think, that Trump is moving cautiously ...

So, sanctions remain in place. As to exactly how temporary this will be, apparently hinges on Putin's proven willingness to be reasonable.

Trump has also been portrayed as possibly being in Putin's pocket. It seems to me that this latest stance proves otherwise ? Trump will want the world to be in no doubt as to the truth of his true situation .. to show that he's his own man. Again, what he's doing is, therefore, thoroughly sensible.

Good for him. And, should Trump's initiative succeed and Putin actually DOES find it in himself to be reasonable ... then, good for him, too ... and all of us.

Time will tell as to whether Putin really WILL do the sensible and decent thing. I'm glad to see Trump taking a no-nonsense leadership role in this matter !

Sir Drummond. As you are probably well aware by now. Those Americans who are, and have been claiming that PUTIN caused Trump to win the election....Are also the very same people who practice hatred through Ignorance. And they proved it by voting for OBAMA twice, and Hillary twice....failing on all counts.
We have members of congress who place their political career's ahead of honesty, and it allows them to put the NATION last..due to their perpetual ignorance, hatred, and Ideology made of Lies.
