He always goes to his own drummer, ask Thoreau. ;) He nearly always entertains though when he graces the board.

I'm harboring unpopular opinions about our new president, because of these opinions I've been avoiding the boards of late. More out of respect for the handful (I can count them on two hands, maybe less) of people I respect, and who happen to support the petulant one, on these glorious NSA monitored interwebs than anything else...

I do appreciate the kind words.

If it makes a difference, I've been more busy here than over at Jim's old place...

You could go with a "Disagree" button...

Maybe a "Respectfully Disagree" button if "Disagree" is too harsh...

We should have a "Safe Space" forum too...

Mick, if you didn't love Gorsuch I think you're going to, I'm still LOL!

Gorsuch v. Prepositional Phrases (http://languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll/?p=30739)February 1, 2017 @ 1:09 am · Filed by Ben Zimmer (http://languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll/?author=8) under Language and the law (http://languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll/?cat=11), Syntax (http://languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll/?cat=20)

« previous post (http://languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll/?p=30728) |In the Wall Street Journal article "Supreme Court Nominee Takes Legal Writing to Next Level (https://www.wsj.com/articles/supreme-court-nominee-takes-legal-writing-to-next-level-1485912410)," Joe Palazzolo writes that Judge Neil Gorsuch, Donald Trump's nominee for the Supreme Court, has elevated legal opinions to "a form of wry nonfiction." Not only that, "his affinity for language reveals itself in other ways. Poorly drafted laws tend to summon his inner grammarian."
"We're all guilty of venial syntactical sins. And our federal government can claim no exception," Judge Gorsuch wrote in a 2012 dissent, which went on to critique a provision of federal sentencing guidelines "only a grammar teacher could love," with its "jumble of prepositional phrases."

In a 2015 opinion, Judge Gorsuch hacked through another "bramble of prepositional phrases" to figure out how to apply a criminal law that heightens penalties for using a gun in the commission of a crime. In what might have been a first, he diagramed the sentence containing the provision in question and illustrated his opinion with it.

...

Here is the Reed-Kellogg-style (http://languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll/?p=9431) sentence diagram that Gorsuch includes later in the opinion:

CSM. After seeing how our older grandkids are now talking on their TEXT machines. I doubt anything like diagramming will ever happen since they use made-up acronyms to pretend they are communicating....like LOL, and all the other ones you can imagine.

Gentlemen, I appreciate the kind words. My philosophy regarding message boards is pretty much to be true and honest to myself. I think of myself as a pragmatic person, I lean a little to the conservative side on some things, more to the libertarian side on most things. Above all, I don't believe any of this shit is worth losing friends, or potential friends, over. Well, on this board anyway. Over at USMB, I can count on one hand, maybe two, the number of people I might be willing to meet in the real world... Most of them are assholes.

Statistically, USMB. More assholes there per 100 than in the real world. I think the anonymity of the Internet lends itself to "asshole-ishness".

I think the anonymity of the Internet lends itself to "asshole-ishness".The group that owns USMB owns several boards and cross-advertises. I fought them on that one and won so it stayed mainly a political board. What you see now are the dregs from gambling and sports boards, and anyone I had kept out that was welcomed back when I left and just general riff-raff. Still saying the same crap they probably were 10 years ago that's been proven wrong for the same amount of time.

I'm pretty sure that last little cavalcade if douches that piled in here where probably victims of mass bannings of cliques which USMB seems to have a penchant for now depending who is "in" and who is "out" with the staff. I also understand (hearsay) ou can murder your mother and still buy your way into grace there.

Because your life sucks and you suck and you can't do it to people in real life or they'd clock you? I mean what's the point? If I want to argue with a turnip I'll go buy one. Probably get a better conversation. It's like, if you're stupid, why open your mouth and prove it?

Take gnostic for example. Nobody likes him or at best are just ambivalent to him. Yet he still comes on here. Attention? Mommy didn't teach him there's "good" attention and "bad" attention? It certainly can't be that he thinks anyone takes his threads seriously.

Back when you could actually have a decent conversation with an opposing POV without someone's head exploding, I made an effort to log on and keep up. When it turned into replies were just insults, wasting my time seemed to not be worth it. Or hurting someone's feelings. People in real life don't tell you you're wrong? Do you act all butthurt when they do, in public? Shit, that person need not see a Marine recruiter. You never knew you were so wrong

Si I just kind of hang out here to tease the trumpies. Especially Jim :)

Some folks take this stuff too seriously, that's for certain. Others, I am convinced, take on a persona just to aggravate people. Lefties pretending to be righties and vice versa just to make the other side look bad. Just be yourself, shit's fucked up enough as it is, no need to intentionally be an asshole.

Maybe it's my age, but I don't get it.
