Diplomatic Workers Day is a professional holiday for Russian diplomats and dates back to the 9th century when a young Russian State concluded its first agreements with the Byzantine Empire.

The day symbolizes the continuity of many generations of Russian diplomats who faithfully served their fatherland.

“This Diplomatic Workers Day is a token of public appreciation of this demanding trade and nowadays it is widely celebrated in my country with many professional and public events organized with a big gala concert at the Kremlin Palace.”

The date of February 10th was chosen upon discovery of the earliest mention of a Russian Diplomatic Department in 1549. But traditions of Russian diplomacy developed long before that. Legend has it that in 957 [AD], or more than a thousand years ago, Princess Olga visited Constantinople where she conducted successful negotiations.

The history of world diplomacy goes back many centuries and that it is a pity that there is no date set to recognize the historic achievements of diplomacy and ponder some of its failures.

Today diplomats are working in conditions of acute tension around the world and face many challenges, primarily terrorism and other forms of organized crime, trafficking in drugs and people, the increasing dangers of climate change, food shortages in large parts of the world and many others, these threats and challenges cannot be tackled unless diplomats join efforts on an equitable basis and with due respect for international law.
