View Full Version : Provide Hope - really thank you...

Today, Russia has passed the national holiday - day of defender of the Fatherland.
Many Russians for old celebrate this day by its old name, the day of the red Army and Navy. Maybe many do not know, but the army in Russia is still a red flag... Yes, a paradox, there is no Soviet Union, but the red army is.
And on this day I remembered my youth, which came in the 90th... to say that it was a difficult time, is to say nothing. The impoverishment of the population was catastrophic, almost all of the periphery of the country does not pay salaries, I distinctly remember, cash was not. It's not voiced, but there really was a threat of famine.
Remember how at home there was no meat, no tea, no sugar, it was not money. And just then began to receive foreign aid, it was distributed in schools in the state enterprises. I remember aluminum bags with lentils and corrugated tins of beans, where was the inscription - USA.
In this difficult time, NATO countries have supplied food to the countries of the former Soviet Union, humanitarian aid, those people who were considered enemies, and who were considered enemies of the inhabitants of the NATO countries, it's called - PROVIDE HOPE.

Much time has passed since then, many Russians forgot about it. But I remember... I remember how "enemy" is not gave to starve my country, my family, my people. Thank you.

Very kind words and quite true. USA sent wheat and corn to Russia.

How soon people in both countries forget.

...Yes, a paradox, there is no Soviet Union, but the red army is.

An Ignorance and Lie form a Great couple! The Red Army was born in 1918. The State USSR appeared in December 30th, 1922.
You quoted the words of the US immigrant. I'll remind you the text of The Oath of a new born American citizen. Read, think and draw conclusions.

I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen;
that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic;
that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same;
that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law;
that I will perform noncombatant service in the Armed Forces of the United States when required by the law;
that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law;
and that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God.

It was a very profitable deal for which we paid to the USA in gold bricks.

And is there any evidence of such theories?
Of course, I heard about such excuses, but the evidence as there was no and no.
The only fact that the last delivery of humanitarian aid was at a reduced price, that is, the previous is free.

For many, sometimes too difficult to say - thank you.

I have an issue with this topic. Some organization drips tears all over my tube about starvation in the US. You'd have to work harder than getting a job to do that. All you got to do is go downtown and whine. No, you don't get Red Lobster ...but really?

Careful. He will put you on ignore.

It certainly is not the best option.
Apparently my compatriot finds my posts offensive... and it can be understood. It's hard, it's hard to thank an official of an "enemy" for help in moments of weakness.
But still, personally, I really appreciate it, especially knowing how the public in the United States can influence the policies of the state and the fact that the West ordinary Americans voted against humanitarian aid to the countries of the former USSR, people who yesterday were enemies... the more that official Moscow was hiding how disastrous was the situation in the country. I think that few of you know that the Russians in the 90th was on the verge of starvation.
As written by Robert Anson Heinlein, one of the best American writers of science fiction (in my opinion): "what is given freely, is priceless!" - he talked about freedom, with freedom for each person... the majority of Russians paid dearly for freedom. Millions of lives have been ruined, as many are unable to accept and adapt to the new capitalist world, not knowing how to escape from Communist life. Millions became alcoholics and died in poverty not accepting the new reality.

For Brits.
The British Military Cemetery at Sebastopol

(by Konstantin Simonov)

No holly bush is here; no ancient yew tree;
Strange stones embedded in the salt marsh stand,
And rusted by the sun, the cypresses,
Like swords erect and planted in the sand.

And underneath the slender crowns of cypress,
Deep in the earth beneath the flagstones laid,
In order by battalion and by squadron,
The British troops are drawn up on parade.
The heavy lilac bushes break the sunlight
And rustle, moving in the wind, the while
The caretaker, on hands and knees beside them,
Cuts short the turf into the English style.
To soldiers resting in their final dwelling,
A ship from Devon brought a load of tiles,
A prickly blackthorn hedge was planted round them,
And flowers came, from seven thousand miles.
The soldiers far from home will sleep more soundly
Knowing the sheltering mounds above their heads
Are roofed across with tiles from distant England
And English grass is planted round their beds.
On dusty granite pyramids above them,
On plates of brass on which the writing fades,
An English craftsman has engraved in detail
Their numbers and the names of their brigades.
But yet, before they loaded up the vessel,
In fear of foreign treachery and hate,
They hurriedly translated into Russian
The sad descriptions of the soldiers' fate.
The villainous translator made a garble
Of putting into Russian as he must
The words in which the mourning English widow
Implored us to respect her husband's dust.
"Here lies a sergeant. In the name of Heaven,
Bow down your head before this holy cross!"
So many miles from England! Such a distance
From wives and girls who must endure this loss!
On foreign soil they might insult her husband -
Plough up the land and break his tombstone there!
His wife, his mother beg you not to do it!
In heaven's name, please listen! Do not dare!

No need to fear! The date's already fading
On monuments above their silent bed.
The British soldiers sleep in peace in Russia.
We never wreaked our vengeance on the dead!

1939

Ok, I'll bite. This is from the German occupation of the Channel Islands, of course. At a guess, I'd say St Helier, Jersey ?

Balu, I'm very well aware of your anti-American biases, and I suspected something of the kind from you regarding Britain, too. But, just in case you've any room at all in your psychology for actual FAIRNESS ... I invite you to take note of where exactly the Channel Islands are situated on a map.

You will see at a glance - IF you've any inclination to be fair and balanced in your deliberations ?? - that for the British, defending the Channel Islands from German invasion would've been extremely difficult at absolute best, had Churchill decided to try, because of course those islands were far too close to the French mainland. Instead .. he chose to commit what forces we had to more practical uses, ones more likely to yield a successful outcome.

But perhaps your anti-British bias would've preferred to think of Churchill as prone to tactical recklessness ? As much as I don't like the thought of the Channel Islands community having to be abandoned to your country's one-time ex-allies, the Third Reich (.. or would you prefer to gloss over that historical detail, Balu ??), nonetheless, Churchill DID make a tactically sound decision.
