Many laughed today, because Trump triple downed, and stated at a dual press conference with Merkel that they both may have something in common, mentioning wiretaps...

It was part of a Wikileaks dump that Merkel was tapped, so really not a joke. There is proof out there about Merkel...

Trump stands by wiretap claim, jokes he has 'something in common' with Merkel

President Trump on Friday once again suggested former President Barack Obama wiretapped him during the 2016 election, joking during a joint news conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel that they have "something in common."

The president briefly touched on the wiretapping comment controversy when asked by a reporter about his allegations from earlier this month.

“At least we have something in common, perhaps,” Trump quipped.

Merkel cracked a smile as reporters in the room laughed.

Trump’s comment was a reference to 2013 reports that the U.S. National Security Agency had listened in on Merkel’s phone calls. An inquiry was launched into the allegations after former NSA worker Edward Snowden revealed details of the secret U.S. eavesdropping programs.

Merkel declared at the time that “spying among friends” was unacceptable. The incident blemished an otherwise strong diplomatic relationship between Obama and Merkel.

Trump continues to face pressure to provide evidence for his widely disputed claims that Trump Tower was the target of an Obama administration wiretap during the presidential campaign.

Barack Obama 'approved tapping Angela Merkel's phone 3 years ago'

President Barack Obama was dragged into the trans-Atlantic spying row after it was claimed he personally authorised the monitoring of Angela Merkel’s phone three years ago.

The president allegedly allowed US intelligence to listen to calls from the German Chancellor’s mobile phone after he was briefed on the operation by Keith Alexander, director of the National Security Agency (NSA), in 2010.

The latest claim, reported in the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag, followed reports in Der Spiegel that the surveillance of Mrs Merkel’s phone began as long ago as 2002, when she was still the opposition leader, three years before being elected Chancellor. That monitoring only ended in the weeks before Mr Obama visited Berlin in June this year, the magazine added.

Citing leaked US intelligence documents, it also reported that America conducted eavesdropping operations on the German government from a listening post at its embassy beside the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, one of more than 80 such centres worldwide.

Mr Obama’s European allies will now ask him to say what he personally knew about the NSA’s global eavesdropping operation and its targeting of world leaders, including those from friendly states. The White House declined to comment on the German media reports.

WikiLeaks: US wiretaps Merkel and her predecessors

On July, 8, WikiLeaks published three NSA intercepts of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, together with a list of 56 National Security Agency (NSA) target selectors for the Chancellor and the Chancellery. It lists not only confidential numbers for the Chancellor, but also for her top officials, her aides, her chief of staff, her political office and even her fax machine. The combined German NSA target lists released by WikiLeaks so far shows the NSA explicitly targeted for long-term surveillance 125 phone numbers for top German officials and did so for political and economic reasons, according to its own designations.

The names associated with some of the targets indicate that spying on the Chancellery predates Angela Merkel as it includes staff of former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder (in office 1998–2002) and his predecessor Helmut Kohl.

Many of the targeted numbers are for top officials and advisors handling the Economic and Financial Policy at the Chancellery (Division 4), Foreign Affairs and Security Policy (Division 2). It is also noteworthy that the list includes targets at Division 6, responsible for co-ordination of the intelligence service of the German Federation. The publication includes three NSA reports based on interceptions. One is from 2009 and details German Chancellor Merkel's views on the international financial crisis, expressed in February of that year. It outlines concerns for the impaired assets of banks and questioning of the approach taken by the US Federal Reserve. The Chancellor expressed support for the principles in the framework of dealing with toxic assets, being discussed at a forthcoming meeting of G-20 nations in London on 2 April 2009. The Chancellor wants banks to share responsibility for toxic assets and expressed that at least Germany would not have an “anonymous garbage bin” where such assets would be dumped. The Chancellor thought that the Federal Reserve was “taking risks”, according to the intercept.

I have NO DOUBT that Trump was listened in on, likely in various ways, both then and even after he took office. Too many hands in where there are too many cookie jars. And the trails are impossible to find and prove. If someone is going to try and gather intel, or listen in on someone, I'm quite confident they won't forget how to do so and cover their tracks. But Wiki also shows and makes it clear. If they can get in there and listen in on a foreign leader, surely they can listen in on someone running for president - and/or others.

It is good to see that Trump enjoyed his visit with the current Leader of the Free World.
It is unfortunate that he is unable to emulate Merkel's leadership skills.

It is unfortunate that he is unable to emulate Merkel's leadership skills.Whether or not you like the way he goes about it, Trump is a good leader.

Contrast that the complete lack of even comprehending leadership on Obama, Hillary and Kerry. Trump at least knows how to do something. I wouldn't follow your little 3 stooges out of a burning house.

I think Trump is naïve about computers and wiretapping or whatever you want to call it and making a big deal over a fact of life. ANY time ANY one wants to get at you, they can. Hell your cable tv provider keeps data on what channel you watch. You go the internet your ISP knows where you go. Social networking makes it even easier.

So don't piss down my back and tell me it's rainin' because of your partisan quackery.

More and more and more folks have come forward to state they too were hacked/monitored/wiretapped. We have absolute proof from Wikileaks as well. I can't stand the way the information was received, but it proves most of these things nonetheless. One would be quite naive at this point to not believe that Trump and/or other folks have been listened in on.

Merkel the leader of the free world because politico says so? LOL She's a twit. And that's why almost ALL of these other leaders come to the white house and not the other way around, regardless of who occupies the WH at the time.

Here's the rule of thumb for the military anyway. Or used to be anyway. Someone is always listening. Don't say anything you don't want broadcast and/or coming back on you a$$. You info-agers make it a WHOLE lot easier to be spied on. Us cranky old guys don't say anything we don't want everyone to know we said. And we assume the worst.
