PARIS — Two men were arrested in southern France (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/international/countriesandterritories/france/index.html?inline=nyt-geo) on Tuesday on suspicion of preparing an attack to disrupt campaigning ahead of the first round of the country’s presidential elections (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/24/world/europe/france-presidential-candidates.html), the authorities said.

The target of the plot was not disclosed. The news injected additional uncertainty into a tumultuous and dynamic race, in which the first round of voting takes place on Sunday.

The two men, French citizens born in 1987 and 1993, were arrested Tuesday morning in the southern port city of Marseille, according to Matthias Fekl, the interior minister.

He said that the two men were “radicalized” and known to French intelligence services, and that they were “suspected of wanting to imminently commit a violent action on the eve of the French presidential election.”

</header>French police say they have foiled an imminent attack leading up to the presidential election, with the arrest of two men in Marseille on Tuesday. Explosives and multiple weapons were found at the suspects' flat in the southern port city.

The two Frenchmen (http://www.france24.com/en/tag/france/), one born in 1987 and the other in 1993, had met while sharing a prison cell and were known to police as having converted to radical Islam, Paris Prosecutor Francois Molins said at a press conference.

In addition to a machine gun and two handguns, Molins added that an Islamic State group flag (http://www.france24.com/en/tag/islamic-state--group/) was also found in the apartment where the two suspects were arrested.

French Interior Minister Matthias Fekl underscored to reporters that the two were "suspected of wanting to imminently commit a violent act (http://www.france24.com/en/tag/terrorism/) on the eve of the French presidential election (http://www.france24.com/en/tag/french-presidential-elections-2017/)."

Anti-terror police and agents from France’s domestic intelligence agency conducted the arrests.
