‘No Doubt’ Syria has Retained Chemical Weapons: Mattis

TEL AVIV (AFP) – Pentagon chief Jim Mattis said during a visit to Israel Friday that there can be “no doubt” that Syria has retained some chemical weapons and warned President Bashar al-Assad’s regime not to use them.

Mattis, speaking during a press conference with Israeli counterpart Avigdor Lieberman, declined to comment on the number of weapons Washington believes Syria has retained.

US President Donald Trump’s administration carried out a strike against a Syrian airbase earlier this month over an alleged chemical attack on a rebel-held town.

“The bottom line is there can be no doubt in the international community’s mind that Syria has retained chemical weapons in violation of its agreement and its statement that it had removed them all,” Mattis said.

“It’s a violation of the United Nations Security Council resolutions, and it’s going to have to be taken up diplomatically, and they’d be ill-advised to try to use any again. We’ve made that very clear with our strike.”

An Israeli assessment has found that Assad’s regime was still in possession of “a few tonnes” of chemical weapons, a military official confirmed.

And what is Trumps plan? What is his strategy? He made a little firework display, now what?

And what is Trumps plan? What is his strategy? He made a little firework display, now what?

If he strikes to wipe these weapons out - IF they know where they are - Russia and Syria vowed vengeance in return. And of course Democrats would go nuts. If he does nothing, and something happens, Democrats will go nuts. You know that, and I know that.

The best policy is just what Mattis did - thus far make them aware we're not stupid and we know they have them. We already showed them what can happen if they use them against innocent civilians. IMO, the best strategy is just that, and act if and only something like that happens again.

And yeah, downplay it all you want. It was a little more than a fireworks display.

Regardless, this started a LONG LONG time ago. They had chemical weapons the whole time. WHAT did Obama do to help/prevent any of this? Did him and all of his intel agencies get duped? I believe it appears that way. And now a new team has to deal with it.
