View Full Version : Best way to kill your fish?

I know I could just wait it out until the sucker floats, but that just feels mean. I know it's "just a fish", but I still would feel bad and love these suckers!

I looked online and the "humane" options don't seem so great. Don't flush until fully dead it says, as they will suffer. It says you can swiftly cut him in half.

WTF? Another says to place him in a baggy of water and then in the freezer? I dunno, that sounds like he may not like that one.

Add carbon dioxide to the water via alka seltzer? But I would imagine that would be the end of the other 3 as well. :(

And then the rest are lab related, needles of sorts that they would do at universities or zoos.

He's being drifted around by the current. He's definitely moving, no doubt about that, but barely strong enough to keep himself upright. What would YOU do? I'm thinking the decapitation, but then I'll feel like an ISIS member on my fishy. :(

That's the thing about wasps. They love animals. They can't stand people.

Does the fish have ick?

Nah, all the others are fine. No signs of any illnesses, no sign of anything. Weird part - my BIG fish decided to chase him for like 2 seconds, and he was able to muster enough energy to get away to other side of tank. But then like 10 seconds later I looked over and he was upside down, then sideways. I know he's croaking, seen this process a million times. I just don't want him to suffer, but also tough to whip out a knife and behead him like I'm the swordsman in Saudi Arabia either!

I feel bad for him, this is what I see. These pictures were literally like 60 seconds apart.

Damn. I feel bad too. I must be a wasp. :)

i would think the toilet would be very traumatic. I don't know that you'd have the heart to cut his head off no matter how humane. Do you think he is suffering now ?

What is a wasp, besides the obvious?

The toilet - he may live the entire time and then end up at the sewage plant!!

Like my brother said - what do billions of fish do without us? It's not like they have needed our help in dying for a million years. I wouldn't have a clue how to tell if he's suffering. But I can't imagine dying is fun.

Who am I kidding, I cant kill him. I have to suffer and wait for him to be dead now.

I usually bop them over the head with a billy club I keep in the boat.

But, I've never killed such a small fish. Just cut his head off with a sharp knife on a cutting board. Fast and clean.

That's about what I figured. For "fun", but I just can't do it - but I would like to do it with the wifey's big kitchen knife AND on our new cutting board, and of course take some photos. Wait until we are 3/4 of the way through our meal and then show it to her. She would go NUTS!!

If someone were here to do it, I would let them. But if I got him with a net, and then touch him and he's still wiggling at all, I'm not sure I could do it. But if I do, that's the best way.

I remember those sideways fish. I don't think it will be very long. I'd just let it play out.

Why not transfer the ailing fish into a different container, then add the alka seltzer?

Oh shit and EFF me...

Went to doctor this morning, and when I came back I saw my other fish (his twin) sideways, then upside down, then right side up. So it must be the water. I instantly drained 50% of the water and refilled it. I also added/cleaned some stuff from my filter. I'll have to do small changes of waters for the next few days and keep testing the water.

I have that one sideways left, and the baby of that some species. Then I have the big blue guy, don't even remember the species!! He seems fine, although he's not been eating much, so I'm sure that's it. I hope they don't all croak on me. :(

jim..Allow me to offer my RIP here. Now, seriously. This reminded me of our oldest son back in the 70's when he was attending day-care, and they had what they called HOBBY, or HAPPY Day. (Show and Tell)
We had a small aquarium in our dining room with guppies, goldfish, and a few others.
Our son grabbed his Flintstone Lunchbox, dumped out his little lunch, then dipped the BOX into the water, and gathered a few of the little swimmers, before closing the box.
Funny part was, as he pulled the box out of the water...it drained on the hard wood floor, and the little swimmers were flopping.
Not long after that. We agreed...NO MORE FISH.

Fish creep me out. Unless they're cooked and on my plate!Just the opposite here. Fish don;t bother me at all. Unless you try to make me eat it. I can't stand the taste of fish. I'll eat lobster, shrimp and crab legs, but the seafood for me ends there.

When I used to go fishing, it was for sport for me and I always went with someone I knew would eat what I caught.

Woke up and another is gone.

All that's left is a huge blue fish from Central America, but I don't recall what species. I also have a Red Peacock left who is a baby, he had to watch both his parents and his uncle all croak. I had 4 Peacocks a week or so ago. :(

But of course, don't all guys? LOL

Funny thing is, there's a LOT of truth to that! Starting when I was much younger, I would sit to avoid the noise when visiting a lady friend or someone's house, no need for them to share in my business. Then it was like that when I first met my wife. And I'm not going to say how much of that still happens. :) But my wife and I? NEVER share the bathroom, we have our own bathrooms. She knows better than to walk in on me and I would never do the same. In 22 years of marriage we have never walked in on one another!!

But I always stand when visiting Walmart!!

The Jason of fish-land. You carrying a GI Joe machete for them little fish? Probably all run in fear the second you cut the light on. Since I'm sure you bought them a freakin' castle for the tank, we all know where they go when YOU show up.

Here's a mystery...

I checked the water and all pass the test with flying colors. The ammonia is bright yellow - and I thought that's what was killing them. But I read the chart wrong, bright yellow is PERFECT and a .00 PPM of ammonia.

WTF is killing then then? Ammonia, nitrate, nitrite and PH are all doing great. Not sure WTF to do now.

When I had fish, I bought books and tried to diagnose their illnesses. It never seemed to matter, they just died anyway. I think you already know more about them than any of us, so any advice I give isn't very useful. But I would completely clean out the tank and start over, if you can put the remaining fish in a second tank with that same water temporarily.
