To our seafaring folk:

You are experts in handling rough waters. I am not! So, this may sound really wimpy, but I am going on a cruise (relatively small ship as cruises go) in the north Atlantic in October, and don't want to be seasick.

What is your best preventative, and what is your best treatment should it happen anyway? TIA.

Is this like a death curse you have? You're talking 20-30 ft seas. Where's @aboutitme when I need him? Did they pay you take that ticket? :laugh2:

Take the Dramamine if you wish, but there are also patches that can be placed behind an ear.

I learned to stay out on the weather decks the first 2 days as much as possible to breathe fresh air.
Do NOT watch the pitch and roll of the ship! That will do you in fast. Keep your eyes on the
horizon.

Do NOT immediately go inside and bundle up! You might get overheated and then sick. Avoid
greasy foods the first two days. Saltine crackers to munch on is good as well.

DON'T get seasick. Once you do. it's a done deal. There's no fix. You have to ride it out. Start taking dramamine at least 24 yours before you go. They sell it at Walmart.

If you get "really seasick"? Hang over the port rail. No one wants to clean up after you.

Abbey. To be honest with you. There is only one way to avoid getting seasick. Don't go.
Seriously. It's more mental than physical. I know some will laugh at this because they know how terrible it feels to be seasick. But, I can honestly say...I SWEAR on my grandkids...I was never, ever seasick on any of the ships I served on. And, we saw some of the worst sea's in both the Atlantic, and Pacific. The Med is a terrible place in the Winter months, as is the Atlantic...in October.
But the captain of the ship you will be on, probably has a weather guide, with GPS, and much experience to keep the ship out of really bad seas.

Honestly. If you convince yourself to LOOK FORWARD to going to sea, and ENJOY being there...MIND OVER MATTER, is about the ONLY way I can share how to handle it.
Don't listen to people who say it's GONNA happen. Go with an open mind. Enjoy what you will see, hear, and smell. Don't lock yourself in a stateroom, or confined space.

Nothing else I can say, except...I envy you, and anyone who can go to sea. I learned to love it, while others around me....hated every minute.
Good luck. Remember...MIND OVER MATTER.

I love Abs. But I think she bought the budget ticket. We'd be divorced before I'm crossing the North Atlantic in Spring. She can take Russ.

Abbey. I doubt you will ever see it this bad. But it is fun, if you let it be.

That looks like one of the pictures of our first cruise. If you zoom in, you can see us leaning on the starboard railing, enjoying the fresh air and I think I have a tumbler of 12-year-old Scotch in one hand. Ah, the memories!
