I got a rare chance to have lunch today with my cousin's husband, who is an immigration attorney. He represents immigrants during deportation hearings. Which gives him pretty good job security. Because the justice system guarantees every detainee a hearing, a tremendous backlog has developed. Primarily due to a severe shortage of judges, prosecutors and attorneys. If someone is detained today for being in the country illegally, and they have no other criminal record, they are normally assigned a court day (usually in 12-18 months) and released. Arrests of non-criminal immigrants has slowed because of a focus on gang members.
