CNN is reporting that the shooter, a white male armed with a semiautomatic weapon, was taken into custody by police. One of the congressman present said he noticed the apparent shooter sitting in a white van outside the field, but didn't think much of it at the time.
Certainly a cowardly and reprehensible act. Who attacks a baseball practice?

I know these folks don't speak for everyone, but what a bunch of scumbags, using a shooting like this.

Left-Wing Twitter celebrates shooting of Rep. Scalise

No sooner did news break that a gunman shot Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) were left-wing Twitter users celebrating the attack — in which two Capitol Police were also shot, as well as a congressional staffer, and possibly more.

Activist and media personality, Tariq Nasheed, appeared to indicate support for the shooting on Twitter:

Author Malcom Harris, "joked"(?) that the shooter may have simply been acting in self-defense:

Twitter user "Leon Trotsky" wrote that Scalise's shooting was "karma" for his "tea bag" beliefs:

Twitter user "Charles Oakley" wrote that "the KKK fucker deserved it":

Technology writer WaltIsFrozen said the attack will have a "silver lining" if the shooter was indeed targeting Republicans specifically:

"RestlessNews" created a meme that suggested the attack is the definition of "karma":

Other left-wing Twitter users said they hoped this shooting would encourage Scalise to rethink his support for gun rights — as he's a "whore" for the NRA:

Others tried to use the atrocity as an excuse to make jokes about health-care reform:

Others suggested the Scalise shooting was justified owing to the congressman's beliefs:

Apparently the shooter is a deranged individual who hated both Trump and Hillary Clinton. Figure that one out.

The same type of nutjobs were celebrating the shooting of Gabby Giffords. Partisan politics brings out the worst in a lot of people.

I believe you, but I personally don't recall Twitter lit up with so many people celebrating. And yes, BOTH sides have partisan cuckoos, no doubt about that. Had I saw anything like that back then, I would have posted and condemned that as well.

The partisan divide is much deeper now than it was when Giffords was shot. I think it is sad that politics have to become part of a senseless tragedy.

He worked on Bernie's campaign, who really disowned him.

I must say, Trump gave a quick, but excellent unity statement after announcing the shooter is dead.

I didn't see/hear his, but I thought Paul Ryan's speech in front of congress was fantastic, pointing out that they were all ONE.

Same message as Trump, I think Bernie too. Hopefully something good, at least for hours, comes out of this.

Many Bernie supporters despise Hillary AND trump. Hell no DNC. We won't vote for Hillary. I can still hear it.

No doubt, they'll be back to bashing one another by 8pm, and of course Trump will be posting dumb things on Twitter by 3am.

Here's part of what Trump said, if not all, as I didn't see it.

Just noticed there is a video at the site, from Twitter of course. Very bottom of the article.

President Trump: We Are Strongest When We Are Unified And Working Together

Speaking from the White House Wednesday morning, President Donald Trump made a statement in response to the attempted assassination of GOP lawmakers during baseball practice in Alexandria early this morning.

"We may have our differences but we do well in times like these to remember everyone who serves in our nation's capital is here because, above all, they love our country. We can all agree we are blessed to be Americans," Trump said. "We are strongest when we are unified and when we work together for the common good."

"We can all agree that we are blessed to be Americans, that our children deserve to grow up in a nation of safety and peace," he continued. "Please take a moment today to cherish those you love, and always remember those who serve and keep us safe. God bless them all, God bless you, and God Bless America."

The President praised two Capitol Police officers who were at the park where multiple members of Congress and staff were practicing for tomorrow's annual Congressional Baseball Game. They were both shot and wounded, yet continued to take on the assailant.

"Congressman Scalise is a friend, and a very good friend. He's a patriot and he's a fighter. He will recover from this assault," he said. "And, Steve, I want you to know that you have the prayers not only of the entire city behind you, but of an entire nation and, frankly, the entire world. America is praying for you and America is praying for all of the victims of this terrible shooting."

"Our brave Capitol Police perform a challenging job with incredible skill, and their sacrifice makes democracy possible," he continued.

Once again, a criminal with a gun. And once again it must be pointed out, that criminals will get their guns regardless of regulations and it's legality.

He had an AR-15 which is illegal in his home state. The fact is, criminals are going to get their guns no matter what specifically the law says. Look at the gangs over the years. Hell, they all probably have more and better guns than the police you see cruising around have. And it's those criminals, those gangs that need to be taken off the streets.

Finding a liberal that likes guns is a daunting task, so I imagine that finding one actually proficient with a firearm is very rare.

MedStar Washington Hospital Center released the following statement on Scalise's condition:

"Earlier today, Congressman Steve Scalise underwent a second surgery related to his internal injuries and a broken bone in his leg. He remains in critical condition, but has improved in the last 24 hours. The Congressman will require additional operations, and will be in the hospital for some time. At the request of the family, we will continue to provide periodic updates."

Dang. I remember the doctor, who admitted being a 'pessimist' warning about infection. As several members have experienced in recent years, sepsis has become a real threat for anyone spending time in a hospital.

The lack of new antibiotics is another problem.

Prayers for Representative Scalise.
