Surgery tomorrow

Still no time yet, they'll call sometime today to let me know the specific time. The doctor only does the surgeries on Wednesdays.

I don't know what the cards hold for me afterwards, as far as movement and getting back online. I mess with my fingers, even the slightest wrist and finger movements, and they all seem to run up the forearm and to the tendons up there one way or another. And with them slicing the tendon and scraping to the bone - when he told me it'll get worse for about 2 weeks before it gets better - I believe that for sure!

It'll be in a sling when I leave them. I suppose I can at least get online and browse with the one arm. I know sleeping is going to be miserable, because I always toss and turn and am forever moving, so I'm likely to be waking up non-stop.

Botta bing, botta boom they're hooked, and it's a hard one to kick.

Long story short... be careful with your pain meds if they're opioids, bro... it's entirely possible to take them for pain and not get hooked.

And my wife remembers too! So any prescription, if filled at all, will be held and distributed by her! :laugh: At first we agreed "no", but even the Doc said that it's gonna hurt like a bitch for a few days for sure. :(

After one day of nausea and fuzzy- headedness on narcotics, I switched to just Advil. It still hurt, but was under control. Maybe you will be able to do the same. Same after the heart attack. The morphine had me vomiting, so just Advil or Tylenol.

I don't even understand why they give him that many, but he's a veteran also and has some sort of separation anxiety and he can't leave his house alone and get very far way before he freaks out, so the VA pays for him to see a local doctor, who is the one that gives him so many oxy's a month. The times he's run out and couldn't find anywhere to score any more, he's gone through hell too. I've seen him, shaking, white as a sheet, looked like death warmed over. Yeah I never want to get to that point. I don't take mine every day either. I take it once a day usually every 2 or 3 days, as needed. It's rare I'll take it more than once a day. I usually need it when I get out of bed, that's when I'm usually in the most pain. I get the little white 5mg tabs and a couple of those is all I need once and awhile. Kills the pain, gives me a little buzz and gets me going. Once I get going I'm good to go. Yeah from what I've seen, the withdrawls are bad, and they don't peak for about 72 hours after you quit taking it, but they can last two weeks or better.

I actually know another girl who is addicted, and she doesn't even have a prescription for it. She's nice looking and has a sugar daddy that gives her $300 a week to cover the cost of keeping her in pills she finds somewhere. He's a big, dumb, homely logger that has more money than brains, and even though he must know that if he ever quit giving her the money every week she'd dump him like a hot potato, he just keeps on giving her money.

I'll let the woman control the narcotics prescription. I'm a man, therefore that means I am terrified about the smallest of pains. I already nag, complain and scream about my arm, the pain during the day and the inability to sleep. So I know it'll be miserable for a few days at minimum. With her in control, and she's rather militant about such stuff, I'm hoping to get away with just like 2 on the first 2 and then maybe the same on the 2nd day, and then move right over to the Advil/Tylenol, and then play it from there. Hell, I'll even try that first, but "scraping to the bone" puts me in pain just thinking about it!!

That's some bad stuff. I remember seeing him, like you described, white as a sheet, sweating, partially incoherent - and just pissed off in general as all he wanted was his drugs.

Anything that does that to me - and I'd like to think I would stop right there and then, deal with any sickness and get far far away from that shit!!

But a LOT of folks are on it out of necessity. When you deal with a lifetime of pain, some have no choice, and man that sucks. :(

Morphine is on my allergic to list at the VA. I was being injected with it after I had my cervical discectomy. I remember a nurse coming into my room in intensive care after the surgery and she'd stick a syringe full of something into the tube, and after pumping the tube full I'd pass out. I also remember a couple times being awoken by an alarm going off, and one time when a nurse came in to silence the alarm I asked her, what is that, and she said it means you've QUIT BREATHING. Well, I've learned since that that is one of the things that morphine can do to you. I was given time release oral morphine one time that I was supposed to take every 12 hours, and it also made me feel at times as though that if I didn't think about it, I'd quit breathing, so I just quit taking it. I told the VA that later and they put it on my allergic list. Same with anabolic steroids.

I asked the nurse what it was she was pumping into the tube and she said morphine, so I asked her why. She said for pain. I told her I wasn't in pain, so she asked me to give her the 1 to 10 rating and I said 1, I can't feel anything. So she asked if I didn't want the morphine anymore and I said no, it keeps knocking me out and I'm not in pain. So they started me on pill oxycodone which was fine.

Yep... their pills is all they think about. They count them, they carry them with them, they live for them. It consumes their entire day. This guy I know knows that he's doing to many but he can't stop himself even though he knows what he'll go through later. I don't understand it. I'd quit. If I couldn't control them I'd throw them away. Hell if I'd live like that.

jim. I went through, almost the same extremes. I lost ALL FEELING in my left side, arm, fingers, down my body, my left leg, foot, and toes. Navy Doc tried to use that little rubber hammer for reflexes, and got nothing. Four days later...Laminectomy(sp), T-2, 3, and 4 in my neck had been compressed. Got that surgery on the Hospital Ship "Mercy" in the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Storm. 3 days after that, I got out of bed, and slowly walked to the bathroom to NOT use a BEDPAN for the first time before getting better. It was so painful...just touching the hair on my arm near my wrist was agony. BUT...That's all gone. Six months later. 2nd surgery in Portsmouth Naval Hospital for L-2, 3, and 4. Some of the nerves in my legs still feel like PINS & NEEDLES if I don't move for more than an hour.

So I just got back and am pain free, for now! Got a little morphine in the veins and a hefty novacaine shot as well. Took pain killers already as I know that stuff wears off. It only hurts a tad typing, but I know that's all gonna change when all this crap wears off!!

The surgery was a piece of cake and I enjoyed the propofol, at least the first 5 seconds or so. :) :)

Have a sling for now and I look goofy.

Everything went perfect and that's BECAUSE God saw me wearing my lucky Steelers stuff as I always do! :) If I put a Giants hoodie on it's perfectly understandable that the Doc may have cut the wrong arm!!

That morphine sure did last a long time yesterday! I kept thinking to myself "this wasn't as bad as I had thought, not a lot of pain at all" - and that was all the way until I went to bed last night. But then I woke at 5am because all the liquids of course - and OH MAN THE PAIN was waiting for me underneath it all, just as I had suspected. :(

The incision area hurts, bad - but the worst of it all is in my forearm, I guess that's because every tiny little move is moving the tendons from my fingers to the elbow.

And wifey is hiding the pain killers from me!! I'm searching and searching, and coming up empty. :( Probably better off.

The shoulder took I think 3 days before it wasn't 'Oooowwwweeeee!' pretty much all the time. I hope you feel better even quicker. :(

Jim...only One way to get rid of the itch....get somebody to pinch your other arm with a PAIR OF PLIERS on your other arm, and try to pull away.

It may, or may not work. But you'll forget the itch, and the pain will stop it.

Yup... best to follow orders and leave the dang thing on there. That fresh incision needs a little bit to properly seal.

I don't know if you remember when I sliced my arm at work, not long after I hurt the shoulder? I got 13 stitches in that one. But it's on the underside of my arm.

Probably not icing as much as I should, but that changes today. They say to do so for 20 minutes every 4 hours. I've done it twice so far. I know I know, but the woman already scolded me, so save it! LOL

The woman heard me get up at 4am to use the bathroom and was waiting with a pain killer for me when I headed back to the bed, and that helped when I got out of bed 2 hours later. VERY sore today, about the same as yesterday, but prepared this time. Taking that bandage off and letting it hit the air and breathe felt so good though!

The good thing for you and the icing, you could put the compress and use ACE to hold it in place. No way to ice the shoulder other than the very complex system and ice machine. Of that I'm jealous!

Keep an eye on it. If you get a fever, and it begins to be infected...that's dangerous.
Go to a hospital, or call 911 immediately.

After my heart attack, by-pass, and three days. I developed an Infection that began near the incision on my right leg, where they went into the femoral artery to get to my heart.
That became infected, my legged swelled up like a HAM, and I ended up back in a hospital room for 30 days...getting SHOTS twice a day until the infection was gone.
INFECTIONS ARE DEADLY. Not trying to scare you. Just keep you around my friend.

P.S. The infection can lead to a Blood Clot, which can travel to the heart, or brain....Then...BYE BYE.

Scar isn't as cool as I had thought it would be. Today my hand is a little swelled up. I hope that's normal. Maybe because I've been doing less resting, and using it and typing?
