10 Forgotten Atrocities Committed By The Allies In World War II

The saying goes that history is written by the victors, and that holds very true when it comes to World War II. It is often referred to as the good war, with the Allies depicted as the shining white knights who came to save the entire world from the evils of Hitler and the Japanese. However, while the history books tend to depict the Allies as almost saintly, the reality of the situation was often a lot more disturbing and a lot less flattering.

The Allies committed many atrocities during World War II and its aftermath that they would rather you forgot. While there is no questioning that the Axis were certainly worse, it is clear from the many atrocities committed by the Allies that war brings out the brutality in all of us.

#10 - The Massive Bombing Campaign Against Civilian Targets In Japan

Most people know of the moment in history when the United States dropped atomic bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The famous argument for their use was that the Japanese were impossible to bring to surrender and that such a shocking display was the only thing that would prevent a land war that would last decades and cost millions of lives. However, well before the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the US had already been bombing Japanese civilian cities on a regular basis to demoralize the enemy and had caused quite a death toll.

In fact, General Curtis LeMay, who ordered the attacks, was of the mind that the Japanese might not actually surrender until they were pretty much all wiped out. It was for this reason that he decided the bombing campaigns of regular Japanese cities were not enough and that the US needed to go for one of their most major cities and do something drastic.

On March 9, 1945, he carried out his plan and ordered an air raid on Tokyo itself, but this was no normal bombing run. The bombers were dropping napalm cylinders and petroleum jelly to firebomb the entire city.[1] More than 40 square kilometers (15 mi2) of city was burned to ruin, with many melted people stacked on top of each other. It was a horrific sight, with at least 100,000 civilians killed. General LeMay even remarked once that the United States may have killed more people firebombing Tokyo than they did in Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined and admitted that he would have likely been charged with war crimes if his side had lost.

I think it important to note when the country or those representing it, (which is pretty much what the military does), do something wrong. There are always lessons to be learned from what we get wrong, as much as from what we get right.

My problem comes when we concentrate on the wrongs to define ourselves or our history if you will. That is a doubling down on the wrongs.

We certainly don't examine other countries or cultures in the same harsh light retrospectively.

Absolutely! I don't like to read such things about the dark side of American history, but it's there, it can't be removed, but we can still learn from it.

Which proves why NO HUMAN BEING should ever want a WAR.

So, if we are able to get rid of TERRORISTS in the same way they murder civilian men, women and children...Does that make us guilty of the Same Atrocities???

We cannot do anything about the past. But we do have the power to prevent it from ever happening again...IN A PERFECT WORLD...that will never exist.

"Atrocities" are usually define by Monday Morning QBs with a political agenda, and second-hand news. "Atrocities' are usually overlooked for expediency or an political/military agenda. NO war the US has participated in since even before we were the US has not had atrocities in one form or another, depending on who is defining them. At the rate the revisionist mostly-left is going now, the US will be the most criminal organization to ever exist soon enough and all us vets will be war criminals.

WWII was the last war we won because we weren't pandering to a bunch of pantywaist sensibilities. We were there to win. Period. There's nothing antiseptic about war. You can't kill just "bad guys". That would be too easy.

Nice list. What about the "other side"? The Rape of Nanking? The Holocaust? Pearl Harbor? the Bataan Death March? The SS murdering Soviet noncombatants in a scorched Earth policy? Sorry, but if anyone's waiting on ME to feel sorry for winning some shit YOU started? Don't hold your breath. And the whiny shits can just stay in mommy's basement and write bullshit all day.

Germany and Japan brought it on themselves. They reaped what they sowed. War of annihilation ? Genocide?

Mass rape? Punching POWs in their full stomachs so their bellies explode?

Don't complain when the Zhukovs and Curtis LeMays of the world punch back.

Pretty horrific and sad.
No ones hands are clean.

Seems the best we can do is to promote/train to our best ideals and laws, and be accountable when those among us fall short.

!!sarcasm alert!!

Jim, you obviously HATE America, why don't you just admit it?
All the other good things you've said about America are just a smoke screen for your true hate.
As a matter of fact, it seems you've been silent about anything good about America. Frankly, I don't recall you ever saying anything good about America, or the soldiers of WW2. hmmm.
You're clearly more of a lefty than you let on. Only lefties bring this kind of thing up. And what you posted isn't true anyway! Or just a few bad apples. But you're obviously trying to say that the whole of the America are evil war criminals, now and during WW2. why? BTW, have you ever worn a uniform and used a weapon in battle? It was WAR... civilian! Why don't you move? And of course your biggest mistake is that we can't judge people of 70+ years ago by our moral standards of TODAY.

However what you posted about how horrible OTHER countries were... like Russia and Canada... that's real and is OK to be discussed in detail with all the proper moral outrage, and questions of belated criminal prosecutions and questions of national character. But even there you didn't tell the whole story about every other atrocity the Russians, Canadians, British, and others committed Jim. why is that i wonder?

Just so ya understand the difference between this and any other thread - I offered no opinion, for starters, other than "bad shit", which it was! The stuff there is apparently factual, no debate here at DP over whether or not this stuff is really happening or not.

I KNOW you're being a sarcastic bastard, but wanted to point out the differences anyway, between this and threads about current events/wars and such, where we are all usually presenting current articles, not long established facts in history.

I was going to post pretty much the same thing as you just brilliantly did my friend. Now no need to do so as you covered it quite welllllllllllllllllllllllll.

War is hell and is a madness that does not care about innocent people getting hurt/killed.
War only has one purpose, that is to win..
This DAMN nonsense about fighting a kinder, gentler war is insanity that has been promoted by liberal jackasses and fools.
TO MY KNOWLEDGE, ONLY IS THIS IDIOCY PROMOTED IN OUR COUNTRY BY DEMS/LIBS/SOCIALIST MORONS.
AS THEY DEMAND THAT MORE OF OUR SOLDIERS DIE FOLLOWING SUCH INSANE RULES OF ENGAGEMENT.
FFING MORONS THE ENTIRE LOT OF THEM, IMHO...-TYR

:poke:Glad no one will ever have to count on your ability to differentiate in a situation and make decisions. Well, maybe at 7-11 when you're sharing your insight on which cigarettes are better over the counter with a customer.

In the meantime, when people start shooting REAL bullets at you? Stopping them from shooting real bullets at you becomes your first priority and you use whatever means are at your disposal. Don't like the reality? Don't start a war. YOU are the one that wants to do all this "talking" crap.

Your point, as Jimbob note, isn't even a good one. You're trying to mix apples and oranges and call them all the same. War crimes are "criminal" (not a secret word) and punishable offenses by law. Witnesses to war crimes are bound by duty to report them to the next higher up in the chain of command. There's your words so everyone should just obey and we'll all get along, right?

WE WOULDN'T BE AT WAR IF EVERYONE OBEYED THE LAW, EINSTEIN.

I've never noticed criminality being restricted to any one race, creed, color, gender (or not), or country. But I HAVE noticed that all that talking you want to do is what STARTS wars EVERY time and the talkers are NOT the ones that have to go fight them. Judge the actions of YOUR peers, not mine. And you running off at the suck, diplomat types are NOT my peers when talking time is over.

Just talking about this topic yesterday with Russ after my WWII class. We agreed that once a nation starts worrying more about their behavior in the exigent circumstances of war, than concentrating on eliminating a real threat to its future, that nation is doomed. But with all our malcontents, victim-mentality folks, and bun-wearing snowflakes, we're probably doomed anyway.

It's probably bad to admit this, I don't think I every have before, I don't think that the US should be involved in any military actions where protecting civilians is more important than completing their missions. I just don't.

Yes, we should take the time needed to try and get a peaceful resolution, but once the decision is made to use warfare, then do it and get out.
