Kentucky town celebrates Christmas in January for returning soldier

It's Christmas in one Kentucky town.

The residents of Paint Lick are celebrating the holiday a little late -- to mark the homecoming of a National Guard soldier who spent her first Christmas away from home serving in Afghanistan.

Shannon Dale returned yesterday to find businesses and homes decorated with trees, garland and twinkling lights. Residents waved flags and held a reception with cake, punch and hot chocolate.

The effort called "Operation Homecoming," was led by Paint Lick resident Rita Fox. She came up with the idea after hearing that Dale's family planned to postpone their Christmas celebration until she got home.

Dale says she didn't expect all the fanfare. She appreciates it, adding that she still has some Christmas shopping to do.

The celebration continues Sunday, when the congregation at Dale's church sings Christmas hymns.
