Newt Gingrich: Schumer, Pelosi Handed Trump 'a Big, Easy Win'

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Wednesday that Democratic leaders made a big mistake by not showing up to a meeting with President Donald Trump on Tuesday.

Gingrich said on Fox News' "Fox & Friends" that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi made a misstep by refusing to attend a White House meeting to avert a government shutdown after Trump tweeted before the meeting that he didn't think a deal would be reached.

When asked if Trump's tweet, and subsequent photo of him with GOP leaders and two empty seats meant for Schumer and Pelosi, was "genius on his part," Gingrich replied: " It's not genius when somebody walks up to you and hands you a big, easy win. And you say 'okay.' But he was smart. I like the way they set it up. Happened to put [Senate Majority Leader Mitch] McConnell and [House Speaker Paul] Ryan out here on the end, so you can be really clear who isn't there."

The former House speaker went on to suggest that Republicans bypass the 60-vote requirement and "do what we did in the supreme court, make it a majority decision. And then they don't want to show up. Fine. We'll just pass it without them."

He added that "this is the easiest photo win Trump has had in his presidency."

Kind of like what Clint Eastwood did at the convention, when he spoke with an 'empty chair', which was supposed to be Obama. In this case, Schumer and Pelosi bailed, so he setup empty seats for them at his news conference.
