View Full Version : If you live in Oregon; you're too dumb to pump your own gas

God. I cannot believe what a shit-show our society is becoming. Anyone who can't figure out how to pump gas should have their license revoked. And probably not vote.

Oregon is one of two states that doesn’t permit customers to pump their own gas. Thanks to a new law, however, you’ll be able to pump your own gas if you live in counties with fewer than 40,000 residents. KTVL asked their viewers if this was a good idea and, apparently, it’s not.

Commenters on the station’s Facebook page were apoplectic.

“I’ve lived in this state all my life and I REFUSE to pump my own gas,” Mike wrote. “I had to do it once in California while visiting my brother and almost died doing it. This is a service only qualified people should perform. I will literally park at the pump and wait until someone pumps my gas. I can’t even.”

Yikes. But it gets worse.

Qualified people? Isn't that a job you get in high school ?

just incredible incapability. Sickening, really. Makes me think the ONLY hard thing about the zombie apocalypse is pretending i'm not a little excited for it.

This is SOOO Stupid!

I live in Oregon in a county of less than 40,000 people. Most of the gas stations in
Curry County are Full-Service businesses. I have not got a problem getting out and pumping
my own fuel (it is not that hard), cleaning my own windows and mirrors, checking my own oil
and tires.

But the way these stations are run is like a people-friendly business! The pump jockey actually greets and
converseses with a customer. So me getting out and cleaning the glass while he runs the damn pump
is no big deal. We chat, laugh, complain about the weather - it is personalble!

In California, unless you have a handicapped plate or tag, you pump your own. There are very few
Full-Service stations left in that state.

I pay the extra money to have mine pumped for me. I like the old fashionedness of it. But some of the comments in the OP are pathetic.

The issue is - let the market decide. Its not about outlawing full service, its allowing people to pay more for it if they wish.

Yeah. That's how it was when I was a kid. And it makes sense.

Full service isn't even available here in Michigan. Don't remember it being available in Washington state, Arizona, texas, or Florida last couple years either. I thought it went away 20 years ago.

I live in rural Arkansas. In the nearest town to me, pop 4K people , there is ONE station that still has full service. The rest are your convenience store help yourself variety. They are right around $.12 more a gallon, but what's that per fill up?

ANd yeah, when we're traveling I just stop wherever, I don't worry about finding a full service station, just when I'm in town, I'm willing to spend the extra money.

I've pumped my own gas my entire life and was shocked to hear two states still do it for you. I was in Portland last year and got gas. Dude came out and I was thinking gtfo, I can get out of my car, swipe my CC, select the grade and insert the pump. Why is that such a luxury having someone do that for you? It's annoying.

On this one, I hear Ya Pete!

I can do it all myself, but locally I got to know all the pump jockeys and it is a pleasant customer-provider condition.
If I ever need anything, they will smile and provide.

Try that in California and all you get is a blank stare. Most are in fast-stop Mini-markets where the cashier
will not step out from behind the counter.

http://mynorthwest.com/859300/oregonians-pump-their-gas/Laugh now, young 'un . Was a day in time when women did not have a clue how to pump gas. Not sexist either. ALL gas stations were full service. You couldn't pump your own. If a customer was in a hurry and started pumping his own gas, the attendant got his ass chewed. My first legit job (where I paid taxes n crap) was pumping gas. We had no self-service islands.

After they got self service islands, it was usually one, and you got a discount. May be a Southern thing, but most women/girls I knew would not pump there own gas. By God, the BF/hubby better get his sh*t in order.

I used to go every weekend and fill up both vehicles, do the PM on them, and wash them. After I mowed the lawn. ANOTHER thing women used to wouldn't do :).

our local places has a young man in his 30s or so, not quite all there, couldn't hold a "real job" but he survives on his own pumping gas, washing windows, sweeping the floor, taking out the trash, that sorta thing rather than being on welfare. I'll pay the 12 cents per gallon.

We thought we were moving up in the world from mowing lawns and washing cars and paper routes. Now retirees have take all 3 over from kids trying to make money.

Did it take a lot of expertise? Pumping gas? The person in Darin's article seems to think it does.

I had a paper route at 12.

Guy asks his buddy who works at a filling station, "How's it going?"

Buddy replies, "Phew, I'm bushed, I've been pumping Ethyl all day."

Guy asks, "Does she have a friend?"

I had a paper route at 12.Actually pumping the gas itself? Remove gas cap, put nozzle in, squeeze handle. However, that was hardly the job. You cleaned their windshield and other windows if asked. Checked their tire pressure. Checked their radiator fluid (mostly water back then). If someone rolled in with a flat, you patched or plugged it, or if need be replaced the tire. And you actually had to be squared away and polite complete with manners. If anyone complained about your manners or service, you were fired, no questions asked.

For $2.15 an hour, Federal minimum wage.

Yeah. I remember that from when I was little now. I remember the squeegee.

I mowed lawns, cut brush, shoveled snow, stoaked a coal furnce, painted houses, paper route, showed movies at the town
parks, and was a pool lifeguard.

Try getting "most" kids these days to do that stuff!

Wonder how full service Oregon is.

At least in Gold Beach, Brookings, Grants Pass, Medford, and Klamath Falls - it is marvelous.

Dad told me the reason for the no self-serve was because too many either drove off with the nozzle still inserted,
drove off without putting the cap in when done, or those that did not properly ground a jerry can.

Especially now when drive-offs are caught on camera. The other crap just means their insurance companies need to jack their rates A LOT:laugh:

In really think safety was the factor, @Gunny (http://www.debatepolicy.com/member.php?u=30). All the above were hazards.I can comprehend that but I don't get it. When one reaches a certain point of dumb, an alarm should go off or something. Like idiots "forgetting" their kids in the car. How the f- do you forget your freakin' kid? Did the quiet, if nothing else, not alert you to something being amiss? That was auto response for me. Quiet = start looking.

Leaving a kid in a car is flat out neglect!

A pet in a car during hot weather is neglect.

I have NO sympathy in either case.

I have NO sympathy in either case.I could hear my rugrats even when they weren't talking. I knew where each one was at all times. They couldn't even stray. Good Marine Corps training :).

But mark my words ... happens EVERY year. Bad enough pets get left but there's always someone that forgets their child. Or worse, they'll leave them in the car on purpose. I'm not real merciful on the topic myself. You don't want me on your jury. You might as well fill out those Bexar County Jail change of address cards now.

Speaking of. We had an amber alert a couple of days ago some moron took off with two girls. The mother is dead. I didn't hear if he is charged with killing her or not but they caught the bastard in CO. He'll be coming "home".

Acouple of cases in the past two years where a parent wnt into acasino to gamble, leaving a child strapped in a care seat for 4-8 hours (two cases).
You don't want me on THAT Jury!

Exactly, I don't think there's a full service gas station in the entire state of Wisconsin. I've pumped my own gas here for so long I can't remember when the full service quit. I pumped my own gas in NV, AZ, FL and MT too. I honestly thought full service stations were a thing of the past... EVERYWHERE.
