I absolutely love the look of this electrical work! What say though, Gunny and NightTrain ?

This one, and not even cause it's Trump, but some of these Tide pod memes are great. Only idiots eat these things.

That "electrical box" is phone or data. Note the duplex receptacle in the handy box surface-mounted below left of the larger box. And it's mounted on plywood. That is standard stuff or a phone board.

It looks neat as Hell though. Someone put some serious time and effort into making that look good.

Yeah, the box is some kind of PBX switch for an office, and that's some very old cabling, like from the 70s. He used T-25 staples with the plastic head. The plywood is called a 'backboard' for telecom, but usually painted with a fireproof paint in Telecom Grey.

I would have bundled those together, secured them with velcro to the backboard, dressed them and swept in for a cleaner look but that guy obviously cared and took pride in his work. :thumb:

I just hope none of those cables ever need to be moved or replaced. ;)

That's what MY work looked like. I was a real pr*ck about my panels. The one time I actually helped a guy do his house that is EXACTLY how I ran the romex into the panel.

I was wondering about the wires. Thosr staples are what I used on that guy's romex. I did almost exclusively commercial work. I prefer conduit and to knock out my own can. I can't stand those cans with pre-fab knockouts. Never fails you're going to need an off-size pipe from the pre-fab knockouts and they do their own thing when you try using a punch on them.

I'd say that guy had some time on his hands though ..

There will be a panel schedule (list) corresponding to each number/letter most likely taped to the inside of the cover. First thing you do before anything else is identify your wires or you're screwed.

Stapling Romex is fine - that stuff is bulletproof. But I would never staple telecom cabling because on impact it deforms the twisted pair inside and induces weirdness... ty-raps or velcro are the ticket for my stuff. But that stuff was undoubtedly done a long time ago and I don't think it's even twisted pair inside there... it was designed for voice only, way before high speed data was the norm. The colors inside the plastic sheathing is right, but the pairs are lazily twisted because crosstalk wasn't really an issue back in the day.

They're actually pretty easy to ID, even if they're not labeled. I have a toner that shoots a warbling electronic signal through the cable, and I go to the other ends of the cables until my amp screams at me when I touch the right one.

Such search-and-rescue missions are best left to your trusty apprentice, however. They've got long legs and lots of energy. :smoke:

I don't mess with the telecom wires. The contractor has the plywood installed, then we usually just have to run conduit to 4 square with an industrial cover for a receptacle.

Sometimes, like with fire alarm, we run conduits from their panel to above the ceiling. Same for comm if they ask for it, or it's specified in the prints. I can't stand low voltage wiring much less that little bitty crap that looks like candy. When I say "low voltage" I mean anything smaller than 12 AWG. All the rules for specific colored wiring is out the window and it drives me nuts.
