Amid syria tensions, russian jet flies low over french warship

PARIS - A Russian warplane this weekend flew over a French warship at low altitude in the eastern Mediterranean, a deliberate breach of international regulations, a French naval source said on Tuesday.


The incident, first reported by Le Point magazine, comes as tensions mount between Russia and Western nations following a suspected chemical weapons attack in Syria on April 7. At least 60 people were killed in the attack, according to a Syrian relief agency.

France, the United States and their allies are considering a coordinated military response after accusing the Russia-backed Syrian government of being behind the attack. Damascus and Moscow have denied a chemical attack took place.

The weekly magazine said the Russian plane had flown over frigate Aquitaine over the weekend and was fully-armed.

The Aquitaine is equipped with 16 cruise missiles and 16 surface-to-air missiles. It is currently operating off Lebanese shores alongside U.S. ships as part of France's contingent fighting Islamic State militants in Syria and Iraq.

"Passes by military aircraft over warships are things that happen at sea. When it is deemed too close, the opposing party is notified," the source said.

Why not? The Turks did. And after that, Russian planes respected their borders. (Apparently they were flying in and out over the border of Turkey.)

I am much in favor of ships shooting down aggressors. Ours against the speedboats that harass our warships in the Gulf of Hormuz, for instance. Shoot a couple, they won't do it after that.

I think this kind of bullying (I should call it "brinksmanship") can only be stopped by counter-aggression. But usually, as with Kim Jong-Un, that will stop it.

You're right. I'm reading book after book now about "between the wars." Armistices don't work. Appeasement, never do it.

Why not? Because it's never, never about the crisis it seems to be about: the Suddetenland or Anschluss with Austria.

Nobody, anywhere, needs a WWIII. Such a war would almost certainly turn nuclear, and spell the end of the human race - if not from a direct hit, then from radiation poisoning.

That said .. Putin needs to understand that a world where a 'Might is Right' imperative wins out over sheer human decency, is one where everyone's lives are under an unnecessary and unacceptable threat. No power on this planet should believe it possible that chemical weapons against civilians can pass without significant consequences resulting. However it's done, Putin must be made to understand that.
