"Moscow will shoot down any U.S. missiles fired at Syria and retaliate against American launch sites,

the Russian ambassador to Lebanon has warned.

Ambassador Alexander Zasypkin made the comments on Tuesday while speaking on the Hezbollah-

affiliated al-Manar TV channel, Reuters (https://www.reuters.com/article/us-mideast-crisis-syria-russia-diplomat/russian-envoy-to-lebanon-any-u-s-missiles-fired-at-syria-will-be-shot-down-idUSKBN1HI0PU)reported.

President Donald Trump is currently considering military action against Syrian President Bashar al-

Assad following Saturday’s suspected chemical attack (http://www.newsweek.com/syria-gas-attack-tucker-carlson-878933) on the rebel-held town of Douma near the

capital city of Damascus. Medical relief groups say the attack killed dozens of civilians."

On Tuesday, Zasypkin told the Hezbollah-affiliated al-Manar TV channel,

“If there is a strike by the Americans, then...the missiles will be downed

and even the sources from which the missiles were fired.”

He added that both sides should avoid a military confrontation, and said

>>> “we are ready therefore ready to hold negotiations.” <<< :)

Russia playing hardball, then, and saying to everyone .. 'We will do as we choose, we'll support who we choose, crimes against humanity have no meaning for us, and you'll take it all, forever. Fail to, and we'll ratchet things up so that there's a real prospect of WWIII breaking out ...'.

Human decency ... Russia is devoid of it. How safe can the world be, when such a power that's utterly devoid of it is calling the shots ?

Tolerating Russia's belligerence is bad for everyone. We might as well start talking about a new Dark Age breaking out, if the 'Might is Right' principle will supersede anyone's right to decency and security in their lives ... where brutal, savage, disgusting attacks against innocents is socially tolerable.

And this stems from the piece of shit obama left over involvement of our supporting damn muslim terrorists that are attempting to take over Syria.
Trump is not a military man, yet his Pentagon advisers have taken him down a wrong path, IMHO.
Syria is far better off for ,if it is left in Assad's hands, rather than going into the hands of muslim enemies that clearly are dedicated to destroying us!
Who thinks those there attempting to take over Syria are freedom loving patriots??
Best do some research and see the muslim bastards attempting to take over and then wake up to the glaring fact that they are even worse!
Hell,I can not believe that I am having to post this again...-Tyr

I agree with every stance you take, Tyr, that argues for fighting Muslim enemies, especially (of course) terrorists.

But that isn't all there is in the world. What we have here is Assad, happy to use chemical toxins against CHILDREN !!

What we have here is Russia, doing its damndest to PROTECT Assad, rather than allow him to take the smallest consequence for such inhumanity.

And what we have is a Russia that thinks nothing, I repeat, NOTHING, of chemical weapons being used against civilians !!! More ... they INSIST upon not being challenged on it !! Not by anybody. Ever.

Maybe you want to live in a world where all that is tolerable ? Because if Russia isn't meaningfully confronted on all of this, that is the world we'll all end up with.

Muslims are one enemy. YES. Russia is fast shaping up to be another .. an implacable enemy against sheer human decency, where nobody is ever safe, if or when Russia prefers them not to be.

This really needs to be faced.

Hmmmmmm...........is this an escalation of threats? Because I only remember them saying they'd shoot our missiles out of the air, ha, good luck, I doubt that. But to say they'll go after our launch sites, that is quite a threat. Especially as our launch site is likely to be the USS Donald Cook, sitting in the Mediterranean full of Cruise missiles. As I have remarked before, hitting a ship is a traditional and great way to start a war --- whoever wants to start the war.

Theresa May is reported this morning to be "awaiting confirmation" that Assad's side really did use chemical weapons. I assume that means they need time to confer and consider. Could develop into a shooting war.
To consider, does Britain want to take part in a united front? Clearly they were invited, along with France. (EU? What's an "EU"?)

This situation is getting quite interesting. I recently posted that war looks imminent, but that it probably as is usual would start from some totally unexpected source, like the Archduke getting shot in Sarajevo in 1914. So.....Syria?

I am very interested that the poisoning in London plus all the Middle East chemical warfare has alerted a lot of high-level people that this chemical warfare genie IS climbing out of the bottle, right now, toward normalization. Could result in a suddenly verrrrrrrrrry quiet London, or Paris, or New York. No bombs. No destruction of valuable property and buildings. Just........all the enemy people dead. Like the neutron bomb.

I entirely agree with you, Tyr. Of course Obama made a HUGE mistake --- it was when the whole Mideast was going up in smoke about "democracy," as if, and Obama naively decided to take the opposite side from a dictator family who had kept Syria under control for decades, had strong U.S. ties, everything, and yet Obama somehow thought it was a GOOD idea to go to war with him. That worthless guy was such a bad president.

Which led to ISIS taking over the whole area and years of war against them and in favor of some half-dozen hard-Muslim groups in Syria. Indistinguishable from ISIS. And yet Assad is winning, we never win. And the Russkies are in on their side, supplying them no doubt with everything, including the nerve gas. Iran is rapidly gaining its "Shiite Corridor" from Iran straight through to Lebanon on the border of Israel. This is not going well for us: yet another forever war we've lost.

If Trump does go in, he'd better win. What a change that would be. Not that I'm bitter......

No my friend, what I am doing is not mixing those three together, as they are separate problems.
I only addressed the Syria problem and our involvement and our blatantly stupid aiding( a leftover bambastard policy) of those wanting to take over there.
I did not address Russia there in Syria functioning as its ally, nor did I address any action Russia took in Britain against Brit civilians-which by the way I strongly condemn.
I simply refuse to make a stew out of these three separate incidents/problems.
If USA ends up in a damn war over Syria, by way of helping the mmffkking muslim terrorists take over there then we have just made the damn biggest blunder in our nation's history, IMHO.
I have not spent over 45 years studying generals, wars, history etc, just to go about spouting off utter nonsense when I speak my friend.
If we deal with Russia in any dangerous , serious and military way it had best be about -things- other than Syria..
I agree about taking a hard stance along with our staunch ally Britain about its home soil being jeopardized by anybody-which includes Russia.

I hope this clears that part..

Last but not least, I am waiting on irrefutable evidence that confirms who actually was responsible for the gas/chem attacks in Syria.
And that my friend- is because, I WANT HE TRUE GUILTY PARTY TO PAY THE PRICE.

It's .....it's certainly very lively!

I would guess they are doing quick conferring and considering in Moscow today.

I'm okay with this tweet. It's......clear. Not subtle diplomatic language. Not confusing. And yet it isn't war. So far. Talk is talk, missiles are something harder.

I'm on Trump's side. I don't see any other way to get control of the poison gas situation, or several others that have developed because of vapid pusillanimity in the White House in previous administrations.

I can't get enough of this. But it's a good thing Putin owns trump.Enough of what? Let me be clear" this isn't penny ante poker. This is for all the marbles. And I see enough stupidity on BOTH sides right now that it's pathetic.

I do believe Putin thinks Trump will back down. If not that, he is really careless AND reckless. Now, if Putin had just kept his mouth shut, along with his puppy Assad and that idiot Turk Erdogan and just let Trump pull out quietly, it wouldn't be where it is. But Putin can't help himself and neither can Erdogan. I'm surprised their egos fit in one room. They've put Trump on the spot.

Trump has made it worse by running his mouth on twitter. Think I've heard that one before. So far, he is WAY less than impressive as a CinC. Not all him. This JCS is pretty pathetic and weak if you ask me. They about have a cow when Trump says he's leaving, now they're playing stupid because he says he's retaliating. OUR SIDE NEEDS TO GET ITS SHIT TOGETHER. THIS ISN'T SADDAM HUSSEIN.

First, "all options are on the table". That does not require a military response. Second, this is a NATO and/or UN issue, not a US one. Trump needs to go through NATO with any plans; otherwise, he will be acting on his own, or perhaps in concert with the UK who appears to be ready for a shot at some Russians. Only May so far has backed Trump.

Third, no matter what Trump does, he's got a few hundred relatively unsupported men in the field who should be assumed as fair game in the event of any strike. Where are out closest assets that can hold 2 nation's armies supported by a third's at bay to get our people out? I don't think we have the assets in the area to talk the shit we are.

We can call in our markers with Israel but plan on WWIII if we do.

Trump is outrunning his lines of support with his mouth. He needs to stop. There shouldn't be ANY talking. The 2 anonymous sources (from JCS I think? in the other thread) need to be found and shut down. Then somebody needs to get a plan together instead of running around like a bunch of blind queers in a hot dog factory.

If this is a NATO response and Assad/Putin are expecting the US Navy to carry it out? Have another member(s) of the NATO team do it while we attract attention. Hardly a difficult ruse but good enough for arrogant assholes to fall for.

IMO, this FUBAR. Have I ever mentioned I hate politicians? Damned civilians

To an extent, these issues are interrelated.

Syria, launching a chemical attack against civilians, children included. It's an example of a regime acting like terrorists. It's an example of a total contempt for human life, and if it's not answered by a significant response, one that'll make everyone understand that there are certain depravities of the human spirit that CANNOT and WILL NOT be tolerated ... that response, if given, is to the good.

Russia is Syria's ally, and it's acted - just as it always does - to shield Assad's regime from any culpability. Russia's saying .. Assad is our ally. He can do anything, and we'll support him. Doesn't matter what it is ... we'll still support him. In that regard, any and all criticism is deemed unacceptable ... oh, and so is any chance of anyone investigating, too. Because, you see, Russia has deliberately blocked an inquiry into the truth of this matter.

This is surely consistent with a country that will also launch chemical weapons attacks ITSELF against foreign powers.

So, I'm asking: does Russia get away with all of this ? Or NOT ? Do the rest of us do what we can to convince Russia to adopt properly decent, human standards in its conduct with others ? Because, if this lesson isn't learned ... you tell me, Tyr. Why would their banditry EVER end, if we didn't stand up and be counted in the face of it ?

You say you want irrefutable evidence of what happened in Syria. Trouble is, RUSSIA ISN'T ALLOWING ANY INVESTIGATION. So, thanks to them, you'll likely be waiting forever.

And this can't just be left alone, with Syria ignored. If that happened, Russia would think it had won, that the West has no backbone, and that it's 'business as usual' ... which is where we WERE, when the Salisbury chemical attack happened.

So much for that, then.

There's just the one real question. Does Russia get away with a 'Might is Right' approach to world business, one endangering all our security, everywhere ? Or .. not ? Do we give our response, or, do we cower behind the sofa, not daring to confront Mother Russia's brutalities, ever again ?

Can any of us Honestly say we have more information, or know-how than the President of the United States? His job..and every President's primary job it to Defend, and Protect the Constitution. Yes, we shouldn't be going where we have no SKIN in the game. But the World is different these days. Nothing will ever be the same as most of us wanted it to be. Not anymore.

Let's give Trump, and the Generals around him a chance. Does anyone honestly believe...other than the Trump Haters, and Liberal Wussies around us..that Trump wants a WWIII?

If anyone really thinks that. I'm sorry for you. As a Veteran, and father of Two Veterans. NONE OF US want another war...anywhere. But...If the U.N. and 108 countries are afraid of PUTIN...since they didn't vote in favor of taking action against Syria...Do you want them to continue KILLING people around the World...just for the hell of it?
That's what they are doing. And ALL OF US as Americans, in the richest, freeist nation on Earth
simply can't just say...."Let somebody else do it!" That's not the American way..unless you are a Hollywood Wussy who only knows how to KISS ASS."The American Way" so far hasn't really accomplished a whole lot. Meddle in other countries and screw them up comes to mind as an accomplishment.

I'm not against our idealism. I just don't confuse it with reality.

I have no faith in Trump as a military leader and bestowing him with the title doesn't make him one. You of all people should know that. "Sir" Elton Jane has been knighted. Can you see him in a sword fight? Titles mean nothing when you're out of your element.

He's talked himself into another corner. And we're along for the ride.

Bear in mind that Trump has his advisers. As independent-minded as Trump appears to be, I seriously doubt he's acting without advice.

Trump played hardball with 'RocketMan' in N Korea. It looks like his approach is paying dividends. I'd much prefer to see if Trump will win the day ... given, of course, that Putin only really respects strength, as I think is true. Trump is without doubt a strong leader.

Gunny. I know you don't, and never will like Trump. Of course he's not a military leader. Nobody ever said he was, much like every president we've had that never served in the military.
I don't know what you mean when you say "The American Way" hasn't accomplished a whole lot.
As a MARINE, are you saying you've lost ALL OF YOUR PRIDE in being an American?
You know, as well as I. We still live in the greatest nation on Earth. And, I've been around the World twice, can't count the number of countries I've been in...yet NOT ONE OF THEM is as welcome to call home...as this nation is. Sorry you are so down on Trump. Perhaps you'd prefer another Obama..or a Hillary??? I doubt that! Speaking of Titles...Because we call you GUNNY, is out of respect for what you were in the CORPS. Would you prefer we just call you another civilian who knows nothing about being Proud of your Service?

You've made your views clear. Your hatred for Islam does not make Putin any less of an enemy than he is making of himself. HE is the one threatening us.

If Trump back down, I suspect the ramifications will be swift and international. Our stock in the World is going to nosedive into a cliff.

My hatred of the muzzies does not cause me to be blind to reality my friend. In regards to Syria, the thousand gallon wine vat that obama both pissed and shit in- This confrontation stems directly from that festering sore that obama got us involved in..And is like a disease he inflicted upon us.
Of course our military leadership will advise Trump to continue the policy started by the bastaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaard obama!
As obama deliberately did a great many things to harm and weaken this nation, our involvement in the Syria conflict was one of those, IMHO.
MYSELF, I DO NOT WANT OUR GUYS DYING TO FIGHT TO AID THE MUSLIMS IN SETTING UP THEIR "MUSLIM CALIPHATE"-- AND THAT IS WHAT DEPOSING ASSAD IS TRULY ALL ABOUT WITH THEM.
As a Marine, you are always geared to fight, but you are also very intelligent- thus may also see when the fight serves no national purpose......
Syria is not attacking us, nor was Assad a great threat to us. So why are we there(?), answer= obama...
And for me that answer says it all..-Tyr

Syria may not be attacking us ... but there's an attack implicit in all of this, nonetheless. It's this: the acceptability of the deployment of chemical weapons against civilians.

Salisbury, UK, one month ago .. proved that this is not an issue limited to a far-away place having precious little impact or relevance to us in our daily lives here in the West. It's an issue which Russia may make highly relevant to ANY of us, AT ANY TIME, according to the Kremlin's wishes of the time.

Syria can be used to ram home the point to Russia that such acceptability of chemical attacks on civilians is not something we'll sit still for, in the West. We WILL respond when a bandit regime, one choosing to act like terrorists whenever it feels like it, starts launching hostile attacks with nerve agents, and the like, against innocent citizens.

** LATE ADDITION **

On the matter of the Salisbury attack ... the OPCW has just, as I type, CONFIRMED the UK's initial findings on the nerve agent used. I'll be opening up a separate thread on this.

See ....

https://news.sky.com/story/chemical-watchdog-confirms-novichok-poisoned-sergei-skripal-11327382

Independent chemical weapons scientists have confirmed that "high purity" novichok was used in the attempted murder of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia.
Tests carried out by experts from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) showed the nerve agent was found in environmental samples collected in Salisbury.

Blood tests also revealed that the chemical was found in blood samples taken from the Skripals and Detective Sergeant Nick Bailey, the police officer who first attended the scene.

The report from the OPCW says the chemical was "high purity" with a complete absence of contaminants.

Foreign secretary Boris Johnson called the results "conclusive".

"There can be no doubt what was used and there remains no alternative explanation about who was responsible - only Russia has the means, motive and record," he said.

The tests were carried out by four independent laboratories affiliated with OPCW and samples were transported under a "full chain of custody", the report said.

My friend, if we took a firm stand against Russia on chem attacks in Britain I am in agreement with you.
But this starting of a very possible WW3 over Syria, the same Syria obama got us involved in -I am firmly against.
Reality is this, thanks to the obama policy policy of putting us into that festering sore -Syria conflict we are swiftly heading into a scenario
that could start WW3.....
WHAT GOOD WOULD IT BE TAKING A STAND IF MOST OF THE WORLD IS BLOWN TO BITS- AND POSSIBLY ALL HUMAN LIFE DESTROYED?
As it goes now, looks like only the chinese, muzzies, dems/libs/socialists get advantage from this, IMHO-
AND THAT ONLY IF A WW3 DOES NOT OCCUR.....-Tyr

Nobody wants a world war. I doubt that even the worst power-hungry types in the Kremlin want that.

Remember 1962, the Cuban Missile Crisis ? The world faced just such an eventuality, back then. Even Krushchev backed down ... when he had to.

I think Putin is another Krushchev. Belligerent in the extreme, but actually NOT an idiot.

Syria and Salisbury have, in common, deployments of chemical agents used against civilians. They also have in common Russia's complicity in each deployment.

Now, do we have a world to look forward to in which the likes of Russia can be seen to have the freedom to deploy attacks on civilians, and to prop up regimes that perpetrate their own versions of the same crime ? Can nobody be totally, 100%, free of concern that the area in which they live will not be attacked ? Because I'm sure the good citizens of Salisbury believed just that ... FALSELY ...

We fight terrorists for good reasons. None of us wants to tolerate what THEY launch against people. Is what Assad has done, and what Russia has done (and will support others in doing !) so very different, and so much more worthy of toleration ?

NO. OF COURSE NOT.

So if we want to fight terrorists, we should also want to oppose these variations of it.

Russia's so-called reputation of being anti-terrorist is shot to hell ... FACT. Salisbury confirms that they are their own version of terrorists. This is surely obvious.

Do we accept THEIR terrorism, just because they're a major nuclear power ?

'Co-ordinating efforts' is a typical Putin ploy. It does not mean he has any form of co-operation in mind. Rather (if not a joke !!), he wants a finger in the pie, hoping to disrupt.

Russia used its veto, now for the TWELFTH time, in the UN .. this time, blocking any effort to independently investigate the Syria chemical attack. Twelve times, Russia has intervened to protect Assad's regime from any accountability for its actions.

Russia also wanted - actually, demanded !! - to have its own participation in investigating the Skripal case, in Salisbury. Naturally, we refused them that option. As our ambassador to the UN ably put the point ... an arsonist becoming a firefighter, then asking him to investigate his own fire (!) ... makes not the slightest sense.

I wonder, if Assad's regime did fail (and it seems that it won't) .. whether Russia would think it had a right to take over ITSELF, in Syria ?

I wonder if Russia, too, would count as a far worse devil ?

There is precedent. Think Afghanistan, 1980 .. and Russia's walking in, taking over, installing a puppet regime to administer their rule for them.

Syria is not really about Russia, until Putin made it so. It's about Iran and hegemony. It's more and more like pre-WWI.

Ah, good ol' Iran. That'll be the Iran long since regarded as a leading world sponsor of terrorism. As Russia is also a leading sponsor (especially where their nuclear program has been involved) of Iran ..... with both supportive of Assad .....

Only my opinion here, but I fully suspect: IRAN is merely waiting in the wings to take over Syria since IRAN and PUTIN both have an interest in the SPOILS.

Commentary: Cracks in Russia-Iran alliance open options for Trump

Jan 8, 2018 - As diplomatic negotiations over Syria's future heat up, the differences between Russian and Iranian goals there threaten to intensify. Iran in particular believes that Russia's willingness to work with countries like Turkey could undermine Iranian interests in Syria. Iran's leaders are also concerned about ...

That's it. Syria almost got rid of us --- but no, they just had to use nerve gas on that suburb of Damascus. I think it is worthwhile to try to keep poison gas and other chemical agents from being normalized. I was very eager to pull out of Syria as Trump started suggesting.

But now.....I think he's right to make the chemical agent attacks cost them. Otherwise we are going to see a lot of gas masks hanging around a lot of people's necks.
