A great American.

Sharon met him 20 years ago when he was up here filming a movie. She was a cook at a hotel in Palmer, and that's where the film crew was staying. He'd come down and sit in the restaurant at 5am or so and just hang out drinking coffee, talking with Shar, hours before the other film crew got up.

The last morning he was there, he was BSing with her as usual. He stopped, looked around a bit, and said : 'You know, this hotel is a real shithole.'

Sharon had to agree, and they both had a chuckle. It was, but it was convenient for the shoot location in the mountains.

RIP, Gunny. You'll be missed.

My dad works with a former marine who loves this scene. Because his drill sergeant "was just like this, only angrier and with coarser language."
He joined in the early 70's, so I am guessing Gunny can relate.

It is sad to see such fine people depart on a different journey, yet it is one we all must take
eventually.

RIP "Gunny" R.Lee Ermey:salute:

...So true Elessar...couldn't have said it better ("One we all must take eventually")

Interesting how everything works in this life....everything comes in stages...each stage is so different...and In-between each stage their are things that happen..some good some bad...almost as though it was a test....for the final stage...

Y'know ... I'm REALLY not liking these "RIP Gunny's" There's just something wrong about that ...

I met R Lee at MCRD. They keep a set of quonset huts there where they filmed Gomer Pyle. Whenever they would bust out the "old school" crap, they'd run a crew down to SD. The quonset huts in Heartbreak Ridge are the very same. Got some treadwear on that street. "The Boys of Company C" was his first movie. The opening is filmed right outside 3rd RTBn on the infamous yellow footprints.

How the years go by.

How many people die from pneumomia. Seems to be the number one cause of death.I actually died from pneumonia. It's not hard. You don't know you have it. I had no idea. Typical jarhead mentality. I was never sick. I thought I just had a cold. After the 3rd or 4th faceplant on the patio I got a clue something might be wrong.

It was definitely not worth being a hardass. I'm still paying for that crap.

Anyway ... Semper Fi, Guns. Your eyebrows are unsat. Looks like there's a hedge-fucking-hog growing out of your face. You could plant corn in that shit. I hope they got a set of clippers at MCRD, Heaven so you can un-fuck your ass before reporting. :salute:

@Gunny (http://www.debatepolicy.com/member.php?u=30) Headlines keep saying "former Marine". He's gonna haunt people.Damn civilians. Technically, they are even more wrong in Ermey's case.

He is a medically retired Staff Sergeant. His back got messed up. No idea how. Anyway, your retirement certificate comes with a cover letter that ensures you understand you are transferred to the Fleet Marine Force Reserve and subject to recall. "Retired" is a misnomer. My paycheck is actually officially titled "Retired/RETAINER pay". You don't get rid of Uncle Sam's Misguided Children until you die

I believe after he got famous they promoted him to Gunny. Know the Corps it was just to keep the paperwork squared away.

Very sad to read this. I loved this man. He was a decent man, and a soldier. And also a great actor! But overall, he was a soldier, a Marine, first and foremost. I always had a lot of respect for this man. I know 73 isn't a child, but still too young for good people.

Rest in peace, Gunny.

Anybody seen the Sergeant Major? I'm starting to get worried. Not that I like him. Sergeants Major made my life "difficult". And yes, I DID spell that right.
