There won't be any BBQ's here, nor any celebrating. Just the family, thew 3 of us at home.

Anyway, here's a little gathering of pictures to honor the day, and ALL of those fallen fighting for our great country.

The U.S. Postal Service will send you free Flat Rate shipping boxes, Customs forms, Priority Mail labels and tape for sending packages to Iraq or Afghanistan. Call 1-800-610-8734, select option 1 (Express Mail, Priority Mail or Global Express) and ask the service agent for the Military Kit (or Mili-Kit).

My wife is already sending things as part of their "care package program" or something sounding like that. Honestly, I admit she is more proactive than I am.

Not sure how it is now but mail usually took about 3-4 weeks when I deployed. Probably quicker if they can fly it in. Our came by ship so we'd get it whenever we got an underway replenishment from the UnRep ship.

Our daughter is in a program where you send packages several times a year to a soldier assigned to you. I don’t recall the name, but it’s pretty cool. She thought of doing this on her own. Mama is proud that we raised a child who cares.

Absolutely nothing. I guess we (wherein “we”= Russ) will just continue renovating the powder room.

If I had my Camaro I'd be out and about cruising around, but I'm stuck with this OLD PERSON'S CAR Buick Regal.

In all fairness to the Chevy dealer, they did ask me if I wanted my car for the weekend, but I said no, it's already there, go ahead and get those stripes painted on.

Other than the standard tv advertisements about Memorial Day Sales that are just another way to make money, and get people to start their vacations.

Glad to see more Respect being shown. Sadly....We heard somebody say "Have a Happy Holiday" on Friday. How nuts is that???

Then again. Look at how our country has fallen so low over the past dozen years.

Visit my Dad's, Step-Dad's and Mom's graves. Enjoy the lovely setting, flags on all Vet's graves, along the hillside
overlooking the ocean. I'll try to get a pic or two and attempt to load them.

Dad and Larry were both WWII Vets.

Dad, South Pacific, then also through Korea and 'Nma.

Larry, flew as a radio operator ofn transports "Over the Hump", India to China.

I have to say, my parents taught us that as kids. Memorial Day is to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice whther enlisted or volunteer.

Remember, then enjoy the weekend with family and friends, keeping in mind those whose sacrifices made it reality.

Veterans Day is for all those who served, living or not. Memorial Day is solemn.

I was trying to think ... (hard enough task  ) I don't remember celebrating Memorial Day specifically. I don't know that I recall every hearing it was a solemn occasion though. I honestly never paid much attention to the why's of holidays.

Put flags by my Nam Vet brother and WWII father's graves yesterday... and if anyone wonders what the Latin inscription on my brother's grave stone says, it says, "I lived this life." He ended all his poetry and stories he used to write with that. He had 146 IQ and was a member of MENSA. He took college level Latin in high school. He loved it so we thought it would be cool to put it on his grave stone.

Just scroll diwn to Memorial Day and Veterans Day, difference:

https://www.va.gov/opa/vetsday/vetday_faq.aspoohI know the difference when I actually think about it. I just don't think about it. Especially now that I don't work. Every day is the same measure by whether or not the grandkids are home all day. I actually have to kick myself in the butt to make sure I remember birthdays and holidays.

Honestly, I'll probably get up, work out. Clean up around the house a little chase kids trashing it faster than I can clean it. Same thing I do every day. I might go to the church up the road that invited me to a Memorial Day service. It's a Baptist church so I probably know all the things not to say and do :) But they can forget the "encouraged to wear your uniform" part. Drawback is first time visit to Baptist church and they DO make an issue of welcoming you and putting the spotlight on you and THAT is definitely NOT my style.

I wonder if they ever considered that might be a turn off to some people? Let me slip in the door sit through the service and slip out and leave me alone

Visiting with some old friends that didn't make it...in my head …

Spending the afternoon with my favorite vets that did make it (my sons) and have friends that didn't make it. We will tell war stories about those friends and keep their memory alive at least between us if no where else. It is weird that when we do this every year we feel like we all knew those heroes though we are of different generations. It is also uncanny how similar the character of those heroes …. selfless, humble, courageous and loyal....

Nice, simple, and poignant.:saluting2:

There used to be parades at home on 'traditional' Memorial Day, May 30, which is also my birthday.
I thought as a young kid the parade was for me, but my Mom took me aside and explained the meaning
to me. With Dad assigned overseas at the time, the meaning stuck - hard!

I have always viewed Memorial Day and Veterans Day as a teaching experience for my daughter. As a non-military family, we never experienced anything first hand. So you have to approach it otherwise.
Today, we started out at Los Angeles Memorial Cemetery for an observance of the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. Then we went to the All Wars Memorial in Boyle Heights. Followed by a cookout at my sister's home in East Los Angeles. Which is always a good time for all.

Russ’ great great great, etc., grandfather has one of these next to his headstone in Maine. He was 15 when he joined a Massachusetts regiment and fought in the Revolutionary war. We have his actual rifle, bayonet included, on our wall. Being the colonial history lover that I am, I truly am in awe of these things. I always worry someone will steal either of them. Luckily, the cemetery at least is in a small town in Maine. Fingers crossed.

My dad was a WWII vet, bronze star recipient, in the Italian campaign, as I’ve mentioned here before. Maybe we should get a marker for his grave, though the Catholic cemetery removes everything you put there in a few days.

Oldest brother is a Vietnam vet, though he was drafted and def did not want to go. He now has Parkinson’s, and the VA hospital attributes it to exposure to Agent Orange.
