View Full Version : While Democrats pander to their base, Trump shows leadership

"Trump is being the adult in the room" - imagine that.

Chuck and Nancy look like fools, IMO, and I sure hope Trump and his speech writers make it clear. They have supported so many illegal immigration things, and now are silent. This is more about them stopping Trump in any way possible, as they stated from day one, and very much less than anything to do with border security.

A perfect evening would be a SOTU address - and one that ends with the declaration to get the funding - and re-opening the government and getting folks paid.

Marc Thiessen: Shutdown showdown -- While Democrats pander to their base, Trump shows leadership

Last week, Democratic Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia offered President Trump some advice on how to end the current border wall standoff. "Always try to find a solution in which both sides come out ahead," Warner told the president. It's good advice. Trump is taking it. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., are not.

On Saturday, Trump did exactly what Warner suggested, offering Democrats a win-win compromise. In addition to his 230-mile physical barrier, Trump said he would support three years of legislative relief for 700,000 recipients of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, as well as a three-year extension for 300,000 other immigrants whose temporary protected status is expiring -- 1 million people in all. These extensions, Trump said, would give Congress time to "work on a larger immigration deal, which everybody wants -- Republicans and Democrats." His offer, Trump said, was "straightforward, fair, reasonable and common sense, with lots of compromise," adding that "both sides in Washington must simply come together … and find solutions."

The Democrats' response? Pelosi called the offer "non-starter" even before Trump delivered his speech. Schumer declared it "one-sided and ineffective." That's ridiculous. Obviously, Trump's proposal is only an opening bid. But instead of making a counteroffer and negotiating in good faith, Democrats are demanding unconditional surrender. That extremism is playing politics with not only the lives of the DACA and TPS recipients, who would benefit under Trump's plan, but also the lives of the 800,000 federal government workers who are about to miss their second paycheck.

Trump is being the adult in the room. He has stopped talking about invoking a national emergency. He's showing flexibility on the definition of a wall, the number of miles, the amount of money -- and adding immigration sweeteners. To demonstrate his support for immigration, he even held a naturalization ceremony in the Oval Office to personally swear in new citizens from Iraq, Bolivia, Jamaica, the United Kingdom and South Korea, telling them "our whole nation embraces you with open arms and joyful hearts."

But it seems Democrats' objective is not to find a way out of the stalemate; it is to humiliate the president. Since Trump heeded Warner's advice, maybe the senator should go to his own leadership and tell them the same thing: The only way this standoff ends is with a win-win solution. Trump is willing to let Democrats claim victory, as long as he can, too.

Yup, what I said - and even now some democrats are stating to Pelosi to at least give a counter offer. But she'll come back with an offer, and likely nothing for a wall.

Congress agitates to end relentless shutdown

There's a flurry of movement to end the shutdown on both sides of the Capitol, but no signs that either President Donald Trump or GOP and Democratic leaders are budging enough to end the standstill now on its 32nd day.

A group of centrist House Democrats, sick of political posturing, is pressing Speaker Nancy Pelosi to counter Trump’s immigration proposal with her own potential compromise. The group, led by freshman Rep. Elaine Luria of Virginia, is asking the California Democrat to offer Trump a vote on his border wall or some sort of negotiated security package in February if he first signs a bill reopening the federal government, according to a draft of the letter obtained by POLITICO.

In the Senate, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) forged a deal to allow votes on the president's proposal, which would provide $5.7 billion for his wall and temporary protections for some undocumented immigrants, as well as a stopgap bill pushed by Democrats to fund the government until mid-February. But those plans would require 60 votes in the narrowly divided Senate, and each seems unlikely to pass. The Senate passed such a stopgap bill in December, but that was before Trump came out in opposition. Now the president would almost certainly need to endorse such a measure for it to get 60 votes.

He didn't "fold" at all, you simpering fool. He simply postponed the SOTU until after the shutdown is resolved.

'Folding' would be signing the democrat budget with no wall. That's not going to happen.

Postponing because Pelosi wouldn't let him in the house chamber. Trump tried to fight it and in the end caved. Open the gov and negotiate without hostages.

First time a president hasn't given a SOTU address in HISTORY. Nice going pelosi, you pathetic old senile HACK.

Get the wall funded, THEN open the government, simple as that, otherwise the wall will NEVER get funded, and we all know it. Democrats LIE. When they say open the government and then we'll talk about it, translation for that is, open the government and then the answer is STILL NO.

The only one taking "hostages" are the democrats, because of their deranged, psychotic hatred for President Trump. They will do whatever they possibly can within their power to see to it that the president doesn't get ANYTHING he wants, even if it means their own political career or if what they do is BAD for the country. They are the absolute FILTH and embarrassment of America.

Yes you are right, unless Trump uses the hostages he knows he won't get want he wants. Like a spoiled brat. The polls show clearly most are not in favor of the wall. He's just pandering to his hardcore base of 30%. That isn't how you should run a country.

Polls are brought up here all the time. When in your favor you stay silent. Interesting. Look at the fox news poll. That is basically your base. According to a friendly media outlet like fox news, he's losing support on this.

Pilosi is pulling her "We will see what is in the bill when we vote on it" again, but with a different slant.

She is as phony as a 3 dollar bill.

Fox got 2016 wrong, too. They all did.

Everyone is losing favorability numbers during this, and I think Democrats more than anyone in their insane quest to make the USA a 3rd world shithole.

Now who is the simpleton? This was never about the money. Pelosi knew she would never be elected Speaker if they allowed construction of the wall. Now she is fighting to hang on to power. If Mexico sent a couple of pallet loads of $10 bill in unmarked bills to the White House tomorrow she would still argue that only Congress has the authority to spend that money and would never allow it to be spent on the wall. AOC and the other, foaming from the mouth, Democratic Socialists would have her voted out of the Speakers post in a New York minute if she dared to hand Trump a victory.

NO, he didn't. He re-opened for 3 weeks to continue on a deal... and even then... you have ignored the other threads where it outlines the other options he has to fund things - with YOUR money too, snowflake. Thanks!

And re-opening to negotiate is what a leader does, while others - from the very beginning have stated they would obstruct everything they can that Trump does.

sooo... what was the point of the shutdown? why shut it down at all if you're not going to win with the leverage of hostages? Trump just caved.

President's number one job is protecting America. Not just a wall, but the People. He's a leader the Dems, Nancy, and "petey" will never admit. So goes it for the Ignorant.

The President knows....Nancy is only worried about keeping her SPEAKER job. So she is kissing the butts of the Socialists like Ocasio Cortez, and the others by putting them in committee's. Nancy is a SELFISH, FRUSTRATED, BRAIN DEAD rich floosey who has trouble with thinking, speaking, and breathing at the same time.

It will end up being funded one way or another. And you'll be paying your fair share for it!! If things get shutdown again in 3 weeks until that happens, so be it. If it needs emergency funding or already allocated funding, so be it.

Yup, he's trying to get things done on many agendas, while getting attacked from all sides. And yet he's been extremely successful. One more block to go... and that's border protection. And if it's liberals paying for it instead of Mexico, I'm ok with that. :)
