Celebrity lawyer Michael Avenatti has been arrested on charges related to an alleged $20 million extortion of the athletic apparel company Nike, federal authorities said Monday.

A press conference is scheduled to discuss the charges against Avenatti in Los Angeles on Monday afternoon. Avenatti is due to be presented in federal court on Monday.

Avenatti had represented porn star Stormy Daniels in her lawsuit against President Donald Trump and his former lawyer Michael Cohen.

The charges were revealed less than an hour after Avenatti announced a press conference to discuss purported claims against Nike. An FBI agent said in the complaint that the lawyer had threatened to hold a press conference on the eve of Nike’s quarterly earnings call to announced “allegations of misconduct by employees of Nike.”

A criminal complaint against Avenatti says he “devised a scheme to extort a company by means of an interstate communication by threatening to damage the company’s reputation if the company did not agree to make multi-million dollar payments to Avenatti and [co-conspirator], and further agree to pay an additional $1.5 million to a client of Avenatti’s.”

The complaint says that last Wednesday, Avenatti and a cooperating witness spoke by phone with lawyers for Nike “during which Avenatti stated, with respect to his demands for payment of milions of dollars, that if those demands were not met ‘I’ll go take ten billion dollars off your client’s market cap ... I’m not f---ing around.’”

Oh man, this sleazebag is fooked! I don't know how many years he is facing... and down the line if they ever offer any type of settlement... but I would say he is facing some serious jail time for sure, and no better man deserves it.

He told Nike exactly of his plan, and then followed through with it, and then was arrested! LOL What a maroon!

Avenatti indicted by federal prosecutors

Federal prosecutors in Manhattan and Los Angeles indicted attorney and celebrity Trump foe Michael Avenatti early Monday afternoon for a range of financial crimes.

Prosecutors in the Southern District of New York (SDNY) say Avenatti formulated a scheme “to extract more than $20 million in payments from a publicly traded company by threatening to use his ability to garner publicity to inflict substantial financial and reputational harm on the company if his demands were not met,” according to the criminal complaint.

The company in question is Nike, the sportswear and apparel giant. The company’s shares plummeted after Avenatti cryptically announced on Twitter Monday that he would detail “a major high school/college basketball scandal” that Nike perpetrated at a Tuesday press conference.

Avenatti allegedly threatened to hold just such a press conference in secret discussions with company representatives in March. The complaint claims Avenatti timed his announcement to correspond with Nike’s quarterly earnings call and the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

During a March 19 conversation with Nike emissaries, Avenatti allegedly demanded a $1.5 million payment for an unnamed client who supposedly possessed information harmful to the company. Avenatti then allegedly demanded that Nike retain him and an unnamed co-conspirator to conduct an internal investigation of company practices, for which he demanded between $15 and $25 million in compensation.

In exchange for those payments, Avenatti allegedly told Nike he would not go public with his accusations.

There are four counts to the SDNY indictment, including extortion, conspiracy to commit extortion, and two counts relating to his communications about the alleged scheme.

A second set of charges followed in Los Angeles, where authorities accused Avenatti of embezzling client funds to cover his own expenses and debts.

A Daily Caller News Foundation investigation revealed that Avenatti’s professional past was beset with bankruptcies and mounting back taxes as well as unpaid legal judgments for sex discrimination. Avenatti threatened to sue TheDCNF after that reporting appeared.

Michael Avenatti has been charged with extortion in court papers filed on Monday by the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York.

Those charges are the result of Avenatti's alleged attempt to extract more than $20M in payments from a publicly traded company.

The company in question is Nike, and the charges against Avenatti were announced shortly after he tweeted: 'Tmrw at 11 am ET, we will be holding a press conference to disclose a major high school/college basketball scandal perpetrated by @Nike that we have uncovered. This criminal conduct reaches the highest levels of Nike and involves some of the biggest names in college basketball.'

In one call to Nike's attorney on March 20, Avenatti declared what would happen if his demands were not met, according to the complaint filed on Monday.

'I'll go take ten billion dollars off your client's market cap,' Avenatti allegedly said during the call.

He later noted: 'I'm not f***ing around.'

One day before that call, Avenatti allegedly told those same attorneys that he would release damaging information about the company unless they agreed to make multimillion-dollar payments to himself and a second defendant.

That second defendant is listed as a cooperating witness and not identified in the filings, though it is stated that he is a male and a lawyer who represents high profile clients.
