First initiated in 2005, it replaced the older radio systems dating into the 1950's.
The older versions of RDF - Radio Direction Finders - was really a challenge
due to terrain, distance, and signal strength. This new R-21 integrates it all into
one and produces images on a computer screen that can be transferred onto
a special SAR program for search efforts

It made receiving VHF-FM calls much easier and allows us the ability to get
both lines of bearing and geographic fixes (up to less than 100 meters with GPS)
on distress calls. Also helps to determine a caller's location because the system
allows identification of other vessels in the area to query as to whether they
heard the calls.
