Gay rights group to Jerry Lewis: Apologize for slur

(CNN) -- The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) Tuesday denounced comedian Jerry Lewis' use of the word "fag" on Lewis' annual Labor Day Telethon for Muscular Dystrophy and called on him to apologize.

"Jerry Lewis' on-air use of this kind of anti-gay slur is simply unacceptable," GLAAD President Neil G. Giuliano said in a statement posted on the group's Web site. "It also feeds a climate of hatred and intolerance that contributes to putting our community in harm's way."

In the 18th hour of the 21 1/2-hour telethon Monday, Lewis -- bow tie undone and shirt collar open -- stumbled around the set at the South Coast Hotel, Casino and Spa in Las Vegas, marveling at the cameraman's ability to keep up with him.

"Look how good he moves that camera, you son of a gun. Wherever I go, he goes," said Lewis, 81.

"Let's see what you do with this over here," the comedian added. Lewis then gestured toward two other cameras on the set.

"Oh, your family has come to see you. You remember Bart, your oldest son," he said, pointing to one camera.

"Jessie, the illiterate fag," Lewis said, pointing to the other.

They wanted him to apologize for his use of an insulting word.

And fag has several different meanings, who knows what context he was using the word...

Fag can be a slur for homosexuals or can mean a cigar.
He was referring to a person.
And I know very few gays that use fag in referance to each other or themselves.

Yeah, it's words. And I wish that it where as simple as that they are only words.
But the fact is that there are people that will be angered by words. I look foreward to a day when that may change, but it won't happen.
I, for one, try not to use slurs outside of jokes because I find the words rather disgusting.

You can call me crazy, but I don't want to use words I don't like. And if someone called me a cracker as an insult, I would ask for an apology. If someone used slurs in referance to you, how would you react?
Maybe you'd laugh on the outside. But what would be you're real reaction?
