Another Newsweek Conspiracy: 'Greta Thunberg Snubbed for Nobel Peace Prize' By Big Oil

Newsweek reporter Rosie McCall offered a conspiracy theory as to how a 16-year-old environmental activist somehow failed to win the Nobel Peace Prize this year: “Greta Thunberg Snubbed for Nobel Peace Prize by Committee Run by Norway, One of the World's Biggest Oil and Natural Gas Exporters.”

This new theory comes courtesy of a magazine fresh off breaking the news that opening tanning salons in urban neighborhoods were a plot to give gay men skin cancer, or something.

McCall wrote:


The Nobel Committee has surprised oddsmakers by not picking 16-year-old Greta Thunberg to win the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize.

The five-member Norwegian panel instead announced on Friday that Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed had won the award, "for his efforts to achieve peace and international cooperation, and for in particular his decisive initiative to resolve the border conflict with neighboring Eritrea," a statement said.

Thunberg has become the figurehead of the youth climate movement after skipping school to protest outside the Swedish Parliament in August 2018, inspiring the waves of student strikes that followed.

Over the last year, she has (among other things) led a Global Climate Strike spanning 150 countries, graced the cover of Time Magazine as a 'Next Generation Leader' and sailed across the Atlantic Ocean in a yacht to speak to lawmakers in Washington and New York.

One of those countries is the nation that effectively decides who wins the Nobel Peace Prize each year -- Norway, where the five members selected to serve on the committee are chosen by the Norwegian parliament. The country has a complex relationship with greenhouse gas-emitting fossil fuels, which historically have been (and arguably continues to be) a major source of Norway's wealth.

McCall gave Norway some credit for weaning itself off the fossil fuels poison and moving to reduce its emissions, but of course it wasn't good enough:


Pete Erickson, a senior scientist at the Stockholm Environment Institute, who co-wrote a 2017 report highlighting the stark difference between Norway's climate goals and their investment in the fossil sector, says these actions are not enough.

Thunberg herself may not have wanted a prize for her contribution to the climate change movement but for many, Norway's decision to give the award to a climate activist would have been an important symbolic gesture.

"We could all do more," said Webber. "But, Norway, is more aggressive with their shift to a post-oil world than every other major oil-exporting country.

Choosing Thunberg to be this year's winner of the Nobel Peace prize would have been "a handy symbolism to match their actions," he added.

Why was this Greta von whatever even in the running for the Peace Prize? I realize that the Nobel Peace Prize has become kind of a joke lately, but at least the guy that won was working on peace. Her only actions that I know of is complaining about climate change, and I don't think she has even tangibly affected anything with that yet.

I took that family home with me Pete, I gave them a warm safe place to sleep, I gave the man a job even though I didn't really have a job opening. I have the credit card receipts where my wife spent hundreds of dollars making sure those children were as well dressed and ready for school as my own. I spent thousands of dollars sending the wife to first junior college and then the University of Arkansas, so that she could become a teacher and not have enormous student debts hanging over her head.

And you dare to tell me that a 16 year old child who lectures me on subjects she herself doesn't even understand is more relevant than I am? Fuck you , you little twerp.

I've always been amazed that a site that has so much advertising and sells so many memberships also has to beg for donations each month to keep the servers running.

I'm on a Razorbacks fan site, well it's called Hogville and am friends with the owner, they have around 40K members, and he doesn't advertise as much as USMB does and they don't sell premium memberships and I know he shows a profit each year, and that's even including paying the UofA a pretty sizable amount for using their trademark .

Truth - I literally have someone living with us in our home right now that had no place else to go. It's a long story, but I just couldn't leave someone out in the cold with nowhere to go. And if you collected 100 of my closest friends over the years, and asked them to describe me, they would use 2 words - kind & generous.

Folks here only know what we allow them to know. But to be told that a child is better than us? When I have lived a life, worked many jobs and busted my ass, been through so many tears of hard knocks, been married 25 years and raised my son. Just have done it all, both bad and good. It's called life. And perhaps Greta will have some things to look back on as well when she reaches 50. But to be told that the little craphead has accomplished more than us - for being helped across the water and read someone else's speech and whining. See, people like Pete, they don't just disagree with us, they genuinely think we are bad people and that anyone who agrees with them politically is automatically a good person. This is how they can reconcile claming that illegal aliens are better than people who want the border closed.
