In the Eastern Pacific. I cannot reveal what I know about surveillance
but suffice it to say they are firing on all cylinders,

The Coasties deserve more credit and better equipment than they get. A 50 year old ship shouldn't still be out on drug interdiction duty.

Thanks!

The biggest problem has been budget. The 210 ft WMEC's are slowly being phased out and replaced by
the newer 157 ft fast response cutters.

Every year the Commandant has to fight tooth and nail for the budget in Congress.

Soon the MH-65 'copters will be 35 years old.

I've got a friend who's son is waiting to get his first ship assignment in the Coast Guard. She was in the Navy, and he seriously considered following her, but wanted to specifically be involved in drug interdiction.

That would be easy. Rating of ME - Maritime Law Enforcement, or
as mine was, BM -Boatswain's Mate..

I was an MP, one who in the last 10 years of my career was involved in the drug war for the most part. I was part of a joint drug task force, we were specifically tasked with helping smaller towns in Arkansas serve high risk no knock warrants. The stories I could and have told , people are dumb, and even dumber when it comes to drugs.

In the Command Centers and even at the Boat Station and Cutter, I had to play across the
board on specific missions. As part of the MAA/Security force in Cape May NJ, I was the MAA
and baliff at Captain's Masts, Judicial Hearings, and Courts Martials. I was also the Command
Escort to take people to the Navy brig to serve out sentences.

Just stick to the regulations and perform.

If the Command respects you enough, they will listen to protests asking
for clarification. It is just that simple. Some folks did not see it that way.

I had 0-6's and even an Admiral 0-7 back off and explain stuff, no malice on
either side! That is perfect! We all grinned and agreed. Sometimes orders are not
clear and have to be laid out better.

Most everyone I served with were good people, but I mean any big organization is going to have assholes and jerk offs. And most of the time everyone knows who they are . I had a pretty good experience in my career overall.

I sometimes wish I had gone regular Army, but being full time National Guard was good too because outside of a couple deployments it was just a regular job where I worked 40 hours a week and got to eat dinner with my family ( in fact while I was serving no knock warrants, I usually got to eat breakfast with them as well as I'd be coming home pretty close to the time they would be getting ready for their days since late night was the best time to serve no knock warrants)

I hung it up after 37 years. 25 of them were enlisted, 12 of them a GS-11.
Every time there was a breach in handling classified information or systems, the entire Coast Guard
Regular, Civilians, and reserves were required to take mandatory security training.

3 times in one year is the straw that broke this camel's back. I could have taught the damn course
after all that time. That is why I rail against civilians who cannot understand why H Clinton's
use of a personal server and handheld devices are illegal.

while what you say about a personal server is certainly true in regards to classified material. It is also true that big wigs are RARELY prosecuted for such crimes. And with 37 years in combined military/government service I know you know that's true.

For example. In Afghanistan , Mike Flynn absolutely, positively disobeyed a direct order AND without authorization gave members of the Aghan Army classified material. Army CID investigated, this DID happen. It's beyond dispute. But the Army declined to prosecute.

Think they would have declined to prosecute if it had been some random Corporal? Of course they would have prosecuted.

Just how it goes. And at some point you just have to acknowledge that and move on.
