Assembly Speaker Joseph Roberts says he was "absolutely sickened" by the news that two assemblymen were arrested today on federal bribery charges. Gov. Jon Corzine called the allegations "beyond disturbing."
They and other Democratic leaders withheld judgment on the charges against Assemblymen Mims Hackett Jr. (D-Essex) and Alfred Steele (D-Passaic), while saying corruption cannot be tolerated. Republicans said the charges show the party in power hasn't done enough to reform state government.
"This is another sad day for the people of New Jersey," Assembly Minority Leader Alex DeCroce (R-Morris) said.
Assemblyman Bill Baroni (R-Mercer) praised U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie - a Republican seen as a potential gubernatorial candidate - for going after public corruption.
"There are two things New Jersey needs in the fight against corruption -- tougher anti-corruption laws and enforcement of the laws," Baroni said. "Chris Christie is doing incredible work enforcing the laws..."
At the Statehouse, Steele, an ordained minister, may be best known for stepping in to deliver the invocation before late-night budget sessions. He holds the ceremonial title of deputy speaker. Hackett chairs the State Government Committee, which handles ethics legislation.
Neither lawmaker had any comment today, and there was no immediate word on whether they would remain in the Assembly and continue their re-election campaigns. However at least one party official in Essex and Passaic counties said Democratic leaders were expecting both to resign. The sources spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the behind-the-scenes maneuvering.
