View Full Version : People who rely on conservative media for COVID-19 news are less informed

Here is a fun article that suggests that those of us who don't take the covid political propaganda campaign seriously are just less informed. We just need to consume more mainstream media.

https://www.minnpost.com/second-opinion/2020/04/people-who-rely-on-conservative-media-for-covid-19-news-are-less-informed-more-likely-to-believe-conspiracy-theories-study-finds/

People who relied on conservative media and social media in early March for information about the new coronavirus infection (COVID-19) were more likely to hold inaccurate beliefs about the potential seriousness of the illness and about how to prevent it from spreading.
They were also more likely to believe conspiracy theories about the virus, including the bogus belief that people within government health agencies were exaggerating the danger from COVID-19 in order to bring down Donald Trump’s presidency.
Those are the troubling findings from a study (https://misinforeview.hks.harvard.edu/article/the-relation-between-media-consumption-and-misinformation-at-the-outset-of-the-sars-cov-2-pandemic-in-the-us/) published last week by researchers at the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
“Because both information and misinformation can affect behavior, we all ought to be doing our part not only to increase essential knowledge about SARS-CoV-2, but also to interdict the spread of deceptions about its origins, prevention, and effects,” says Kathleen Hall Jamieson (https://www.asc.upenn.edu/people/faculty/kathleen-hall-jamieson-phd), one of the study’s authors and director of the Annenberg Public Policy Center, in a released statement (https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2020-04/appc-cas042420.php).
“All forms of media should ask, Are our audiences better prepared to deal with this coronavirus as a result of our work or is their trust in us endangering them and their communities?” she adds.

Previous research has revealed that Americans’ political leanings appear to inform their views on COVID-19. A series of national polls taken in March found, for example, that Republicans were less worried (https://news.gallup.com/poll/295505/coronavirus-worries-surge.aspx) than Democrats that they or someone in their family would be exposed to the virus, less likely to consider (https://www.people-press.org/2020/03/18/u-s-public-sees-multiple-threats-from-the-coronavirus-and-concerns-are-growing/) COVID-19 a major health threat, and more likely (https://www.npr.org/2020/03/17/816680033/poll-americans-dont-trust-what-they-re-hearing-from-trump-on-coronavirus) to approve of Trump’s handling of the pandemic.
The current study looked beyond political affiliation, however. It found a correlation between the views people held about the coronavirus and the sources of media they consume.
How the study was done

For the study, Jamieson and her co-author, psychologist Dolores Albarracin (https://psychology.illinois.edu/directory/profile/dalbarra) of the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, analyzed phone-survey data collected from a representative sample of 1,008 Americans, ranging in age from 18 to 80-plus. Slightly more than half (52 percent) of the respondents were Democrats, while 34 percent were Republicans and 13 percent were political independents.
The survey was taken during the first week of March — just after the U.S. reported its first coronavirus death and a week before Trump declared a national emergency and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended no gatherings of more than 50 people.
The survey’s questions were designed to test the accuracy of the respondents’ understanding about the coronavirus — specifically about its lethality compared to the seasonal flu and the need for hand washing and social distancing to prevent the virus from spreading. The survey also asked respondents for their opinions about misinformation about the virus, including conspiracy theories.
The survey then measured where the respondents got their COVID-19 information. On a scale of 0 (no information) to 5 (a lot of information), the respondents reported how much information they received from the following:
Mainstream print sources (the Associated Press, the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal)

Mainstream broadcast sources (ABC News, CBS News, NBC News)
Conservative sources (Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, Brietbart News, One American News, the Drudge Report)
Liberal sources (MSNBC, Bill Maher, the Huffington Post)
News aggregators (Google News, Yahoo News)
Social media (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube).

Key findings

The study found that people who relied mostly on mainstream print and broadcast media for news about COVID-19 tended to be better informed (and less misinformed) about the virus. They were more likely to say — correctly — that COVID-19 is more deadly than the seasonal flu and that regular hand washing and avoiding contact with symptomatic people help to prevent its spread.
People who got most of their information from conservative media or from social media were, on the other hand, more likely to believe that the Chinese had created the coronavirus as a bioweapon (there is no evidence of this) and that officials within the CDC were overblowing the health risk of COVID-19 to damage President Trump (again, no evidence).
They were also more likely to believe — wrongly — that taking vitamin C can help prevent the infection.

The study also found that people who used Google News or other web aggregators were less likely to believe in the effectiveness of hand washing and social distancing.
Significant gaps in knowledge

This survey was done in early March, so its findings may or may not accurately reflect how media sources affect Americans’ current views about COVID-19. Also, the study was observational (https://www.healthnewsreview.org/toolkit/tips-for-understanding-studies/does-the-language-fit-the-evidence-association-versus-causation/), so it can’t prove that the news sources were directly responsible for the respondents’ knowledge (or lack of it) regarding the virus.
Still, the findings are disconcerting, to say the least. Overall, the survey found that greater than one in five of its respondents (23 percent) believed that China had launched the coronavirus as a bioweapon. “This theory was floated by Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) on Fox News in mid-February, endorsed by Steven Bannon, former advisor to President Donald Trump, peddled in the conservative Washington Times, and touted by conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh who said, ‘It probably is a ChicCom laboratory experiment that is in the process of being weaponized,’” Jamieson and her colleagues point out.
Almost as many of the respondents (19 percent) believed that it was probably or definitely true that the CDC was using the virus to undermine the Trump presidency.
Also, an astounding one in 10 people (10 percent) said they believed it was probably or definitely true that the U.S. government had created the virus itself.
Correcting the falsehoods

“The gaps in the public’s background knowledge that we identified should alert public health officials to the ongoing need for effective communication of needed information long before a crisis,” write Jamieson and Albarracin.
Fact-checking needs to be done by health officials and others carefully, they add, because correcting misinformation and conspiracy theories “may do more harm than good by inadvertently increasing awareness of the problematic claim.” The researchers suggest that efforts to correct conspiracy theories be undertaken only when surveys show such ideas are believed by at least 10 percent of the public.
Jamieson and Albarracin also urge health officials to make sure accurate information about COVID-19 appears in conservative media, particularly since those venues tend to have older audiences who are at increased risk of developing COVID-19 related complications.
One way of doing that is to get credible health experts to do interviews with the conservative media as much as possible. “This strategy was exemplified,” the researchers write, “by National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci, who on March 11th on Fox News responded to Sean Hannity’s request to compare the seasonal flu to the coronavirus by noting, ‘The mortality for seasonal flu is 0.1 (percent)’ and the coronavirus is ‘10 times more lethal than the seasonal flu. You gotta make sure that people understand that.’”

I watch a lot of the msm, including all the propaganda that was meant to sell me on covid, and it really is amazing how credible and real fake news can be. It is an alternate reality that its inhabitants believe in, and I can see why so many lefties don't venture outside of the box. The msm is VERY good at selling its agenda.

My take on the article is that they are not taking into consideration that we really ARE exposed to their propaganda that they fear monger with, but that many of us can see it for the political propaganda campaign that it is.

That's the same old tired spin that libs tell each other constantly - that they're much better educated and smarter than conservatives. I've always found that funny.

There's a glaring flaw in that reasoning in the OP : We don't think the Chinese created the virus, the evidence doesn't support that, but the overwhelming consensus is that they were negligent in playing with it and it escaped one of their labs there in Wuhan. It's deceptive and dishonest reporting to gain a position to dismiss conservatives as a large group of rubes.

Sadly typical.

I liked how they got right to the point of denouncing the notion that the covid propaganda was all about taking down Trump. That was obviously something big that they wanted to accomplish with this propaganda article.

The MSM has the luxury of changing the narrative (and the facts) any time they want, and no one ever calls them on it. What ever happened to "5-6% of infected people will die" and "2.5 million dead Americans". WTF ever happened to that narrative? Why aren't the idiot docs who made these stupid predictions that trashed our economy having their medical licenses pulled? Or at least publicly lambasted.

There's no one left to call them on their bs but us.

Excellent post. It seems like they are getting bolder and bolder as they learn that their viewer base won't vet what they say.

It would seem that the computer models are about as accurate as the climate models. They're not.

On the other hand, had the lockdowns NOT occurred, I think it's safe to say that the death toll would have been much higher. NY was ramping up mighty fast, and when the hospitals and medical professionals became overwhelmed the death rate would have skyrocketed... so it's impossible to say what might have been.

I believe the models were based on zero lockdowns and activity continuing as normal. I could be wrong about that.

I'm hoping we don't experience a secondary spike like what happened during the Spanish Flu after the initial lockdown ended. The secondary spike was far worse in mortality rates.

There was a point early on in the covid propaganda campaign when the ultimate death count was assumed to be inevitable where the same number of people would die regardless of lockdowns or no lockdowns. The "two week" lockdowns were put in place to "flatten the curve", which just meant that the inevitable number of deaths would take longer to occur. It has just been a political propaganda campaign anyway, so who knows. The MSM did successfully reach many conservative patriots, and there are some who bought their propaganda who still believe some of it. The msm is very powerful and very good at selling political propaganda

Probably been posted here already, but John Lott, author of the gun death studies, has a pretty level-headed column in Real Clear Politics:

https://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2020/05/29/us_covid-19_death_toll_is_inflated.html

The latest Centers for Disease Control data show that the COVID-19 fatality rate is 0.26% -- four times higher than the worst rate for the seasonal flu over the past decade. That is dramatically lower than the World Health Organization’s estimate of 3.4% and Dr. Anthony Fauci’s initial guess of about 2%.

When the CDC projected 1.7 million deaths back in March, it used an estimated death rate of 0.8%. Imperial College’s estimate of 2.2 million deaths assumed a rate of 0.9%. The fear generated by the projections drives the public policy debate. The Washington Post headline, “As deaths mount, Trump tries to convince Americans it’s safe to inch back to normal,” were part of a steady diet of such fare. When Georgia opened up over a month ago, the Post warned: “Georgia leads the race to become America’s No. 1 Death Destination.”

The CDC currently puts the number of confirmed deaths at about 100,000. But even the “best estimate” 0.26% fatality rate is a significant overestimate because of how the CDC is counting deaths. The actual rate is fairly close to a recent bad year for the seasonal flu. And though public health officials have been transparent about how they are counting coronavirus deaths, the implications for calculating the infection fatality rate are not appreciated.

“The case definition is very simplistic,” Dr. Ngozi Ezike, director of Illinois Department of Public Health, explains. “It means, at the time of death, it was a COVID positive diagnosis. That means, that if you were in hospice and had already been given a few weeks to live, and then you also were found to have COVID, that would be counted as a COVID death. It means, technically even if you died of [a] clear alternative cause, but you had COVID at the same time, it’s still listed as a COVID death.”

Medical examiners from Colorado to Michigan use the same definition. In Macomb and Oakland counties in Michigan, where most of the deaths in that state occurred, medical examiners classify any death as a coronavirus death when the postmortem test is positive. Even people who died in suicides and automobile accidents meet that definition.

Such expansive definitions are not due to rogue public health officials. The rules direct them to do this. “If someone dies with COVID-19, we are counting that as a COVID-19 death,” White House coronavirus response coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx recently noted.

Beyond including people with the virus who clearly didn’t die from it, the numbers are inflated by counting people who don’t even have the virus. New York has classified many cases as coronavirus deaths even when postmortem tests have been negative. The diagnosis can be based on symptoms, even though the symptoms are often similar to those of the seasonal flu.

It's kinda funny how the article in the OP says "The current study looked beyond political affiliation, however. It found a correlation between the views people held about the coronavirus and the sources of media they consume". I wonder if they found a correlation between political affiliation and the sources of media that they consume?

It was a very effective campaign, at convincing previously normal people to suddenly become hypochondriacs. They had people thinking that if you touch any object with just one live covid-19 virus on it, it's curtains. That one virus has Terminator-like powers, can survive for weeks on surfaces, kills 5-6% of people that come in contact with it, causes permanent respiratory damage, loss of taste and smell, and having the virus gives NO IMMUNITY. So you can recover from covid-19 on Tuesday, and become infected again by Thursday. (yeah right!) Millions will die, etc.

So the MSM convinced a bunch of fools to hoard masks, gloves, bleach, TP, and medical supplies, and run around in a panic, wiping everything down with bleach like hysterical idiots with OCD. That was how normal people were supposed to act. But of you wanted to go to church, you were a cold blooded killer of your own fellow parishioners, some sort of twisted sociopath or something (like Tromp LOL).

The tone of the article I found extremely condescending, especially from a media that has been dead wrong in every prediction they have made:

The study found that people who relied mostly on mainstream print and broadcast media for news about COVID-19 tended to be better informed (and less misinformed) about the virus. They were more likely to say — correctly — that COVID-19 is more deadly than the seasonal flu and that regular hand washing and avoiding contact with symptomatic people help to prevent its spread.

"Correctly"??? This week or last week's bogus facts? That really takes some serious gall to be lecturing people ("--correctly--") with their miserable track record on this story. The leftists pushing the Covid narrative love finding some tiny detail they think is wrong and beating people to death with it ("It's not the flu, idiot! It's COVID-19 you uninformed rube!") Besides, i thought i read that there was no evidence that the disease has ever been transmitted from an inanimate object, its transmission is strictly airborne, IIRC. So that's bogus advice right there about the hand washing. Not that it's a bad idea though, in general, as long as the person doesn't go off the rails and and turn full OCD.

And then suddenly last week, the whole story is dropped like a hot potato. It seems that rioters (whom CNN and other big media outlets simply adore) ignored all the precautions and marched closely packed together through city streets, and the media said nothing other than to cheer them on. This, a mere month after regular normal non-rioting people in the Ozarks were pilloried for simply having a party during the "lockdown" (is that still a thing?). There is no fairness or consistency in any of this, other than, "be nice to our friends, punish our enemies mercilessly, and change the facts any time we want". So much for a free press. They're working hand in hand with the govt, I believe that qualifies as fascism.

So many lies, so many abrupt changes in "facts", so much fear-mongering. I will never pay another dime for cable TV or a newspaper for the rest of my life, journalists are not our friends. As Michael Savage says succinctly, "The fourth estate has become the fifth column." :(

Succinctly indeed.

Sadly, I think they won. What's left for them to do?

1. U.S. acceptance of coexistence as the only alternative to atomic war.

2. U.S. willingness to capitulate in preference to engaging in atomic war.

3. Develop the illusion that total disarmament [by] the United States would be a demonstration of moral strength.

4. Permit free trade between all nations regardless of Communist affiliation and regardless of whether or not items could be used for war.

5. Extension of long-term loans to Russia and Soviet satellites.

6. Provide American aid to all nations regardless of Communist domination.

7. Grant recognition of Red China. Admission of Red China to the U.N.

8. Set up East and West Germany as separate states in spite of Khrushchev's promise in 1955 to settle the German question by free elections under supervision of the U.N.

9. Prolong the conferences to ban atomic tests because the United States has agreed to suspend tests as long as negotiations are in progress.

10. Allow all Soviet satellites individual representation in the U.N.

11. Promote the U.N. as the only hope for mankind. If its charter is rewritten, demand that it be set up as a one-world government with its own independent armed forces. (Some Communist leaders believe the world can be taken over as easily by the U.N. as by Moscow. Sometimes these two centers compete with each other as they are now doing in the Congo.)

12. Resist any attempt to outlaw the Communist Party.

13. Do away with all loyalty oaths.

14. Continue giving Russia access to the U.S. Patent Office.

15. Capture one or both of the political parties in the United States.

16. Use technical decisions of the courts to weaken basic American institutions by claiming their activities violate civil rights.

17. Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum. Get control of teachers' associations. Put the party line in textbooks.

18. Gain control of all student newspapers.

19. Use student riots to foment public protests against programs or organizations which are under Communist attack.

20. Infiltrate the press. Get control of book-review assignments, editorial writing, policy-making positions.

21. Gain control of key positions in radio, TV, and motion pictures.

22. Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all forms of artistic expression. An American Communist cell was told to "eliminate all good sculpture from parks and buildings, substitute shapeless, awkward and meaningless forms."

23. Control art critics and directors of art museums. "Our plan is to promote ugliness, repulsive, meaningless art."

24. Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them "censorship" and a violation of free speech and free press.

25. Break down cultural standards of morality by promoting pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio, and TV.

26. Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as "normal, natural, healthy."

27. Infiltrate the churches and replace revealed religion with "social" religion. Discredit the Bible and emphasize the need for intellectual maturity, which does not need a "religious crutch."

28. Eliminate prayer or any phase of religious expression in the schools on the ground that it violates the principle of "separation of church and state."

29. Discredit the American Constitution by calling it inadequate, old-fashioned, out of step with modern needs, a hindrance to cooperation between nations on a worldwide basis.

30. Discredit the American Founding Fathers. Present them as selfish aristocrats who had no concern for the "common man."

31. Belittle all forms of American culture and discourage the teaching of American history on the ground that it was only a minor part of the "big picture." Give more emphasis to Russian history since the Communists took over.

32. Support any socialist movement to give centralized control over any part of the culture--education, social agencies, welfare programs, mental health clinics, etc.

33. Eliminate all laws or procedures which interfere with the operation of the Communist apparatus.

34. Eliminate the House Committee on Un-American Activities.

35. Discredit and eventually dismantle the FBI.

36. Infiltrate and gain control of more unions.

37. Infiltrate and gain control of big business.

38. Transfer some of the powers of arrest from the police to social agencies. Treat all behavioral problems as psychiatric disorders which no one but psychiatrists can understand [or treat].

39. Dominate the psychiatric profession and use mental health laws as a means of gaining coercive control over those who oppose Communist goals.

40. Discredit the family as an institution. Encourage promiscuity and easy divorce.

41. Emphasize the need to raise children away from the negative influence of parents. Attribute prejudices, mental blocks and retarding of children to suppressive influence of parents.

42. Create the impression that violence and insurrection are legitimate aspects of the American tradition; that students and special-interest groups should rise up and use ["]united force["] to solve economic, political or social problems.

43. Overthrow all colonial governments before native populations are ready for self-government.

44. Internationalize the Panama Canal.

45. Repeal the Connally reservation so the United States cannot prevent the World Court from seizing jurisdiction [over domestic problems. Give the World Court jurisdiction] over nations and individuals alike.

Yep, I think that by the end of Bill Clinton's second term, the reds had won. Obama was just the icing on the cake for them. But Roe v. Wade may die, when Justice Ginsbug dies. Unless Roberts suddenly turns pro abortion, which is not hard to imagine.
