Op-Ed: It's never too late to become a Democrat

LA Times

There was a time when being a Democrat or a Republican was defined by your views about healthcare, abortion, gun control, taxes, education, foreign policy, etc.

Those days are over.

It was something to hear Sen. Mitt Romney, Republican of Utah and the party’s standard-bearer in 2012, tell CNN’s Jake Tapper on Sunday, “I represent a very small slice of the Republican Party today.” An obvious, but candid, acknowledgement.

As he explained, the party he knew as a young man — and even just eight years ago — is gone. “We were a party concerned about balancing the budget. We believed in trade with other nations. We were happy to play a leadership role on the world stage, because we felt that made us safer and more prosperous. And we believed that character was essential in the leaders that we chose. We have strayed from that. I don't see us returning to that for a long time.”

Yet, when asked whether he thinks about leaving the GOP, Romney — like other Republicans who say they are repulsed by Trump’s takeover — declined. He said he would be more effective battling inside the party. But I venture that’s only part of the rationale.

As someone who left the Republican Party to become a Democrat for similar reasons, people often ask me how I could have stayed in the GOP after Trump won.

The truth is, changing your political identity is one of the hardest things you’ll ever do. For a person in politics — for the thousands of elected officials, staffers, local party officials, the entire political class really — it means unplugging from everyone you know and the foundation of your professional and social life. Imagine spending years of your life building relationships with like-minded people, and then one day, deciding to start over.

The best course of action is to consider the merits of each behavior as it relates to your personal values and not worry about whether such action brands you as "left wing" or "right wing." I find it repulsive and abhorrent that so many people have made Covid-19 into a political issue. It's a public health crisis. You should wear a mask in public to protect yourself and others from a potentially deadly virus. It shouldn't be "Trump doesn't wear a mask, so I'm not going to." Why should some thoughts or actions brand you as a "Democrat" or a "Republican?"

I'm not a Republican but I sure as hell will never be a Democrat.

I'm a heartless bitch because I hate ideology that creates victims in order to control them for votes, and that is what I truly see as the democratic party.

We find your latest round of Negativity here also a repulsive and abhorrent. Once again, and as usual. You are using the failed methods of Liberal Radicals to transfer blame for all of the wrong doing...AWAY FROM YOUR OWN ACTIONS.

That's the problem when you tie your identity to a party and not to a core ideology. That's partly why I just don't understand why the Republicans who endorsed/voted for Biden would do that rather than vote for someone who supports their ideology or just not vote at all.

The reasons why I will never be a Democrat

I don’t like Communists

I think you should not kill someone who can’t fight back, never committed a crime, and won’t be able to vote until he or she turns eighteen in 18years and 9 months. It’s not a matter of choice, it’s a matter of pick on someone your own size.

There is a thing called Human nature that needs a thing called The Constitution (not to mention God) to prevent it from enslaving all of us

I believe in private property

I also believe that to err is human but to really louse things up takes an oversized government with too much power

I know that religions have killed and enslaved millions over the course of human history but Socialism has killed hundreds of millions and enslaved billions more in one century ( not to mention starting the worst war in human history)

America, despite its faults, is the greatest nation in history. We are also the only thing that stands between civilization and the next Dark Ages.

Democrats and Republicans both lie but the Democrat elites are the Zen Masters of Deceit, treachery, fraud, and theft.

All the nice looking ladies are Republicans, like Melania Trump and Nikki Haley for starters 😀

So damn well said. Must be right on target as there are no attempts at a refutation...
Communism, Fascism, Socialism are all evil- all hellbent on enslaving people- all are hellbent on killing as many as it takes to gain dictatorial powers over the enslaved masses.
Who but a fool, a blind and gullible child, or an ignorant dumbass would think they are the best way to live and govern?
Answer --the dems think so..
Which verifies why we know that they are like a damn cancer ravaging this nation.. -Tyr

I suspect that those "Republicans" were really Democrats that voted GOP in one or two elections. When a "former Republican" votes for a Democrat for President, I smell manure.
