YOKOHAMA, Japan (AP) — Megan Rapinoe converted the deciding penalty in a shootout and the United States advanced to the semifinals of the women's Olympic soccer tournament 4-2 following a 2-2 draw with the Netherlands on Friday.United States goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher stopped Vivianne Miedema's opening attempt in the shootout and then saved a shot from Aniek Nouwen before Rapinoe put her penalty away.

After Rapinoe scored, she turned to her teammates, folded her arms and grinned in triumph.
Miedema scored a pair of goals in regulation time for the Netherlands, giving her 10 goals for the tournament — an Olympic record.
Miedema put the Netherlands ahead in the 18th minute but the Americans equalized when Sam Mewis headed in a goal off a feed from Lynn Williams in the 28th. Williams then gave the Americans the lead in the 31st.
Miedema, who was playing in her 100th game for the Netherlands, made it 2-2 in the 54th.
The United States will next face Canada in Kashima on Monday. The Canadians advanced to the semifinals 4-3 on penalties after a scoreless draw with Brazil in Rifu.
The Americans were playing in a shootout for the fifth time in a major tournament. The last time was at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, when the U.S. was bounced by Sweden in the quarterfinals.

Friday's game at the International Stadium brought together the two teams that played in the World Cup final two years ago in France. The U.S. women won that 2-0 and afterward the crowd chanted "Equal Pay!" in support of the team's legal fight for equity with the men's national team.
United States coach Vlatko Andonovski tinkered with his lineup for Friday's match, with Rapinoe, Alex Morgan, Christen Press and Rose Lavelle on the bench at the start.
The grueling game was the latest hurdle in what has been a particularly uncharacteristic tournament for the United States. The normally stalwart Americans lost to Sweden 3-0 in its opener before beating New Zealand 6-1. They then advanced to the knockout round following a 0-0 draw with Australia.
The United States hadn't been shutout since 2017.

So the US women’s soccer team has had some struggles in this years Olympic Games, however they are continuing to compete and rise to the challenges. Megan Rapinoe has been a key player and made important shots in the right moment. So hopefully they will continue to perform as champions and win a medal, perhaps the Gold that they were favored to win going into the Olympics. Megan, being an advocate of equality, should certainly take the opportunity as a medal winner to denounce the medal for the US Women’s team and demand medals for all players of all the teams. They could celebrate their Olympic competition equally and receive a new medal perhaps made of Cubic Zirconia.

I have zero appreciation for the sport of soccer/futbol. Closest I came was being pretty decent as fusbol :) I'm older than its popularity in the US. At least anywhere I lived. For those who appreciate the game, yay.

I caught the US Women's Soccer Team tried to pull a kneeling clown act at the beginning. The IOC and host blocked it out. I don't support this particular team as I feel it does not represent nor support the US. Here I thought the Dixie Chicks has already sabotaged their own careers.

I'm all about freedom of speech. In an appropriate forum. Hanging what one believes is dirty laundry on the front porch of the World stage is not an appropriate forum.

Well dang it. The attention getter will not have the chance to denounce a gold medal.

There will be no gold medal chance for the U.S. women’s soccer team at the Tokyo Olympics after they went down to Canada early Monday morning.
The 1-0 victory was the first by the Canadians against their U.S. neighbour since 2001.
A second-half penalty delivered for Canada as it upset the four-time Olympic women’s football champions in Kashima to reach the final for the first time.

Canada will now face the winner of the late semifinal in Yokohama between Sweden and Australia. The gold medal match is set for Friday at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo.
It was the second time in a row the much-vaunted United States team has been pushed out of medal contention at the Olympics. At the 2016 Games, it was defeated by Sweden in the quarterfinals.

Have to throw the Canadian guy a bone Mika-El. Wouldn't want him to not have anything to talk smack about :)

Canada has a swimmer that medaled China's trying to take credit for:rolleyes:

Sorry that American guy in the photo didn't win so he could denounce us some more

A world without both Ellen De Generes and Megan Rapinoe seems a much nicer place , imo .Are they related -- both Satan's offspring ?

And as someone said ,

" I do love it when Megan Rapinoe loses because even though she’s ON Team America, she’s not FOR Team America ".

And as someone else commented ,
" A good team brought low by one whining and bleating individual"

Never contemplated saying this before , but , " Well done Canada ."

Well said Twitter person .

"Wow. The women's soccer team really blew it AGAIN. Losing to Canada ? Probably SORE KNEES from all their KNEELING. I love it when America wins the Gold—but the "bronze" lining here is we won't see as much of the purple hair chick MEG @mPinoe (https://twitter.com/mPinoe?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) during the "off season" pic.twitter.com/DNJdnFMxMl (https://t.co/DNJdnFMxMl)"

Chick ?
Do they mean she is a clucker ?

Like most Canadians or Northern Yanks we were brought up on hockey and so we hate shoot now in the NHL and in soccer.

Its just not our thing. Look I am happy or women beat the US. We always have a rivalry in hockey and soccer. However when you win by a shootout its pretty dang close. It could have easily gone either way. I think if you saw at the end of the game that is genuine respect on both sides. The other political stuff within the US team I leave to you guys.

As for the Canadian women soccer team member who calls herself gender fluid and goes by the pronouns they and them and does not appreciate being defined as female I can only say she chose the women's soccer team so when push came to shove it was convenient to be female. I don't get that. This trying to dance on both sides of the floor at once has to be clarified in the olympics better than it is.:dance:I got a real problem with that weightlifter and certain athletes playin both sides of the fence at once for what ever makes it easier for them to win.

I know about as much about soccer as I do hockey. That's not much at all. If I understand correctly, a "shootout" would be a free for all against just the goalie over some infraction?

Here's a suggested new slogan for the US Women's Soccer Team: "More practicing, less demonstrating and whining"
