Reports: Calif. Crackdown On Truckers Hurts Supply Chains

UPDATED 7:31 AM PT – Tuesday, October 19, 2021New reports revealed a supply glut in the Port of Los Angeles is a direct result of regulatory crackdown on the trucking industry by California’s ruling Democrats.
According to Forbes (https://www.forbes.com/sites/pamdanziger/2021/10/15/unclogging-the-ports-will-not-fix--the-supply-chains-even-bigger-trucking-crisis/?sh=54ebf501124f), a shortage of truckers and trucks in California is contributing to supply chain disruptions. Truckers say a new California law mandates that all trucks must be made in 2011 or newer, eroding competitiveness of independent truckers.
California also plans to retire all diesel trucks by 2035, which makes trucking companies reluctant to invest in their fleets. Another law, AB5, effectively outlaws truck owners operators to preserve union monopoly on land deliveries.
“I started this business with one truck as an owner-operator,” said Greg Dubuque, President of the California Trucking Association. “I learned the industry and grew it from there. What we’re trying to state is that we actually incubate our own competition in this industry and that comes through success.”
Truckers say excessive regulation and monopolization of the trucking business by California Democrats is driving-up delivery costs and it pushes truckers out of the Golden State.
“I’ve got four really, really good younger guys that there goal is to one day own their own truck, and become an owner-operator and grow from there,” Dubuque continued. “If this goes in place, what direction are they gonna go?”

Ace Hardware Shelves Go Bare While Supply Chain Crisis Rages

Ace Hardware is reportedly finding it difficult to keep shelves full due to the supply chain crisis threatening grocers, emergency medical services, and holiday shoppers.

Operations manager John Ketels told thechroniclesonline.com his store in St. Helens, Washington, is having difficulty stocking items due to lack of warehouse inventory.

“One-hundred percent of our business is based on product that we can get from our Ace Hardware warehouse that is located close to Yakima, Washington,” Ketels stated. “We’re dependent on what they’re able to get for suppliers. Right now, we’re running about fifty percent of what we ordered that we’re getting.”

LOS ANGELES, California — Sixty-six cargo ships were at anchor off the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, the busiest and second-busiest container ports in the United States, respectively, on Monday as an ongoing cargo crisis continued.

Update: The total number of ships anchored at the Port of Long Beach was reported Tuesday as 100, a new record.

The ships, visible for miles from the shore, were anchored in formation, almost like a military fleet, as they hovered near the coast, waiting for a chance to dock and offload their cargo — and as more ships continued to arrive from across the ocean.

The two port facilities are adjacent to one another (see map). According to statistics provided by the Port of Los Angeles, there were 33 ships at anchor for each of the facilities on Monday, with an average time at anchor and berth of 17.5 days.

The NEWS says the California port situation is caused by a driver shortage.

Not so fast: It is in part caused by a California Truck Ban which says all trucks must be 2011 or newer and a law called AB 5 which all but prohibits Owner Operators.

Traditionally the ports have been served by Owner Operators (non union). California has now proposed banning Owner Operators.

Long term, truckers in California are not investing in new trucks because California has a law that makes them illegal in 2035. The requirement is to purchase electric trucks which do not exist in large numbers and are constrained by their short range.

CARB to begin blocking certain trucks’ DMV registrations in 2020

Carriers domiciled in California with trucks older than 2011 model, or using engines manufactured before 2010, will need to meet the Board’s new Truck and Bus Regulation beginning in 2020 or their vehicles will be blocked from registration with the state’s DMV, the state has said.

The new “health-based requirements” will need to be met before a driver is allowed to register his or her truck through the Department of Motor Vehicles, CARB says. A new enforcement tool used by the DMV beginning in 2020 will automatically block 2010 and older trucks from registration

Problem with that is that it's on the wrong side of the continent.

Oregon and Washington are democrat-infested, so that leaves Anchorage. And we get all our stuff from Seattle and Portland.... so that won't help as far as ocean-going freight.

The Alaska Highway isn't suitable for the bumper-to-bumper southbound traffic, plus the Canadian border and all those fun red tapes... plus we don't have the massive ports to handle that kind of traffic.

Most big rigs in the U.S. have tanks that range in capacity from 120 gallons per tank up to 150 gallons and depending on the radius of operation, may have one tank for shorter hauls or two tanks for longer ones.
The cross country, over the road drivers have to make sure they ARE FULL most of the time.

If Diesel is $5.00 a gallon. DO THE MATH. That's $600 Dollars for just one tank. And if they aren't allowed in CA. unless they have been Vaccinated...If the Ports of L.A. and the rest are blocked now. WHAT'S THAT GONNA LOOK LIKE.....NEXT WEEK???

For fleets that are weight conscious, they often choose to run just one tank allowing for more payload since each tank of fuel weighs around 1,000 pounds. Single-tank operations are also more suited to short-haul fleets where the truck is starting from the same location each day allowing for refueling to occur at the fleet terminal using lower-cost diesel.

Longer distance fleets tend to run two tanks with the higher capacity 150-gallon tanks offering the highest mileage range and best options to purchase fuel at the lowest possible retail price.
