Allen Weisselberg, longtime Trump executive, pleads guilty to tax fraud

NEW YORK — Allen Weisselberg, the longtime top financial officer of former president Donald Trump’s company, pleaded guilty on Thursday to committing more than a dozen felonies, including criminal tax fraud and grand larceny.

Weisselberg and the Trump Organization were indicted last year by authorities in New York who charged them with concealing certain financial compensation as part of what they called a years-long scheme to avoid paying taxes. The case is part of the churning legal maelstrom still surrounding Trump and his close allies, with local, state and federal authorities scrutinizing everything from his namesake business to his handling of classified government documents since leaving office.

Appearing in a Manhattan courtroom, Weisselberg, 75, acknowledged his part in the scenario outlined by prosecutors — and agreed to testify, if called, at a pending trial for the company. As part of his plea agreement, Weisselberg, Trump’s close and trusted associate for decades, would spend five months in jail, followed by five years of probation.

Trump executive pleads guilty in tax case, agrees to testify

NEW YORK (AP) — A top executive at former President Donald Trump’s family business pleaded guilty Thursday to evading taxes on a free apartment and other perks, striking a deal with prosecutors that could make him a star witness against the company at a trial this fall.

Allen Weisselberg, a senior Trump Organization adviser and formerly the company’s longtime chief financial officer, pleaded guilty to all 15 of the charges he faced in the case.

In a low, somewhat hoarse voice, Weisselberg admitted taking in over $1.7 million worth of untaxed extras — including school tuition for his grandchildren, free rent for a Manhattan apartment and lease payments for a luxury car — and explicitly keeping some of the plums off the books.

That if they can actually tie it to trump it's bad news.

This story has a stink to it, and sounds eerily familiar:
1. Trump associate <fill in name here> gets investigated by the FBI
2. FBI grills Trump associate until they says something they can claim is a lie
3. FBI charges Trump associate with lying to the FBI and starts seizing stuff from their home.
4. Trump associate is facing mounting legal debts, bankruptcy, and years in jail.
5. Trump associate finally cops a plea deal to provide testimony against Trump.

You might say something like "well Trump has a lot a crooked associates" if you thought that the FBI has integrity and is non-political. But if you consider the idea that the FBI might not have integrity and might not be non-political, then what would you say? Maybe something like "this is how Stalin did all the mock trials against his political foes in the Soviet Union".

For context, see Michael Flynn, George Paupodopolous, Michael Cohen, Paul Manafort, and many others

Not really the same thing. "Lying to the FBI" is a cheap Fed charge but the NY AG, while a political craptastic pile of crap these days, has some low hanging fruit on this one I think. The Wesselburg tax dodge should be pretty easy to prove with the trick being tying it to trump.
