View Full Version : Anatomy of a BIG Lie: 'Phony Soldiers'

There is an old maxim that if one repeats a lie often and loud enough, it will eventually be perceived as the truth.

Adolf Hitler defined that dictum in his 1925 autobiography Mein Kampf, writing that a big lie must be so "colossal" that the public would be confident that no national leaders "could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously."

After Hitler became the leader of the National Socialist German Workers Party, his chief propagandist, Joseph Goebbels, used the Third Reich's big-lie apparatus to fortify the Nazi campaign against Jews. Goebbels blamed the Jews for Germany's inability to recover from World War I, and this big lie led to the Holocaust -- the wholesale murder of some six million men, women and children.

After Germany's WWII defeat, Soviet leader Joseph Stalin and subsequent Communist leaders perfected the big-lie propaganda machine with media "dezinformatsia" campaigns. The primary organ for disseminating this disinformation was the official newspaper of the Central Committee of the Communist Party, Pravda, which in English means "the truth." Even the name is a big lie.

Here in the U.S., the organs of Leftist disinformation have assumed equally impressive identities: The New York Times, The Washington Post, CBS, CNN, MSNBC and NPR, and the list goes on. (For a weekly recounting of the MSM's biggest whoppers, please see the "Dezinformatsia" section of our Wednesday Chronicle.)

Most recently, the Democrats' dezinformatsia machines were running overtime to discredit Gen. David Petraeus, commander of our Armed Forces in Iraq. In advance of his congressional testimony about the progress of Operation Iraqi Freedom, the Leftmedia gave endless play to those Demo-gogues who have bet their 2008 electoral prospects on failure in and retreat from Iraq.

On the morning of Gen. Petraeus's testimony, the Democrats' most effective web-based organ of disinformation, MoveOn.org, was given a deep discount by the Democrats' most effective print-based organ of disinformation, The New York Times, to run an appalling full-page lie under the heading, "General Petraeus or General Betray Us?"

Democrats and the George Soros-funded MoveOn thought they could, with impunity, brand one of our nation's most distinguished warriors a traitor. By extension, they branded as traitors all American forces fighting jihadi terrorists in Iraq and around the world. However, Leftist politicos and MoveOn grossly underestimated the new media's ability to expose such a colossal lie and grossly overestimated the public's tolerance for such accusations once brought to their attention.

In short, the Left got caught in a big lie and was severely rebuked.

In an effort to offset that rebuke, Democrats and their radical cadre have fabricated another big lie -- this one targeting Rush Limbaugh.

Rush, of course, is the arch-nemesis of the Left. He broke ground for conservative perspective on the radio, much as Fox News did for television and The Patriot did for the Web.

To recap: Rush had been responding to an on-air caller who noted that the MSM has continually dredged up a handful of troops -- some real, some fake -- to provide antiwar statements to support the Demos' desire for defeat and retreat. Rush agreed, noting that some of these anti-warriors, in particular Jesse MacBeth, have flat-out lied about their military service. He rightly dubbed them "phony soldiers."

For the record, Jesse MacBeth, the prototypical anti-OIF poster boy, was in fact born Jesse Al-Zaid. Al-Zaid claimed to have served in Iraq, even receiving a Purple Heart after being shot. He claimed to have witnessed atrocities committed by "fellow soldiers." But it turns out that Al-Zaid never completed boot camp, being discharged after 44 days because of his "entry level performance and conduct." He was not a Green Beret, never in Special Ops, never in Iraq -- though he even attempted to defraud the VA of more than $10,000 for "Post Traumatic Stress Disorder." Al-Zaid, whose protest diatribes have been circulating for several years, is indeed a phony soldier.

But the truth never deters the Left's big lies.

Their so-called "watchdog group," Media Matters for America, removed from context the two words "phony soldiers" and blast-broadcasted the big lie that Rush had branded that label on the handful of anti-OIF protestors who actually served in Iraq. In lock step, that smear was dutifully regurgitated by the MSM and then picked up by opportunistic Demo-gogues in Congress, desperately seeking a reversal of charges after their disastrous attempt to question the patriotism of Gen. Petraeus.

Chief among the most despicable of those propagating this dezinformatsia campaign from their Senate soapboxes are John Kerry and Tom Harkin.

Kerry, like Jesse Al-Zaid, embellished his military record and then used his "hero status" as a platform to falsely accuse ground troops in Vietnam of all manner of atrocities. (He is the target of a national petition to indict him for acts of treason, which now has more than 200,000 signers.)

Kerry's most notable commentary on Iraq in the past year was his assertion that American service personnel are "stuck in Iraq" because they are too stupid to get a better job.

This week he led the charge against Rush, saying, "In a single moment on his show, Limbaugh managed to question the patriotism of men and women in uniform who have put their lives on the line and many who died for his right to sit safely in his air conditioned studio peddling hate."

This is the same Jean-Francois Kerry who, back in 2005, accused U.S. forces in Iraq of "going into the homes of Iraqis in the dead of night, terrorizing kids and children, uh, uh, uh, you know, women..."

Iowa Demo Sen. Tom Harkin, who also falsified his military record by claiming to have been a Vietnam combat pilot when he actually flew repaired aircraft from Japan to U.S. bases in Vietnam, perpetuated the lie, saying, "I must say that as a veteran, I find it offensive that Rush Limbaugh would attack the patriotism and the dedication of any soldier fighting in Iraq. ... I also find it disturbing that his offensive comments have not been condemned by our Republican colleagues or by the Commander in Chief, all of whom are so quick to condemn a similar personal attack on General Petraeus several weeks ago."

Of course, as Limbaugh said in response, "Why should they condemn something that wasn't said? You know what ought to be condemned here is [the Left's] wanton inability to find the truth."

Further perpetuating the big lie -- and further wasting the taxpayers' hard-earned money -- Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and his cadre of MoveOn Demos sent a letter to Mark Mays, CEO of Clear Channel Communications, which broadcasts Rush's program via more than 1,200 stations. The letter demanded that Mays condemn "Limbaugh's hateful and unpatriotic" remarks.

Further, former Democrat presidential wannabe, General Wesley Clark, who has endorsed Hillary Clinton for President, is demanding that Rush be removed from the Armed Forces Radio network.

In the House, Lefty Mark Udall introduced a big-lie resolution condemning Limbaugh, and 26 Democrats have signed on as co-sponsors.

And what of Media Matters, the propaganda organ that launched the lie?

My colleague, National Review essayist Byron York, offered this analysis: "Media Matters is much more than a traditional media-watchdog group. Indeed, it is probably more accurate to view Media Matters as part of the constellation of groups that have come together on the left in the last year or so, all aimed at electing a Democratic President. Their [donors list] reads like a Who's Who of those who have financed the new activist Left."

"Constellation of groups"? In other words, a Socialist propaganda network that would make even Goebbels blush with pride!

You went to a whole lot of trouble to embellish what Rush had to say and blame it on the lefties. Many righties I know were as appalled as I am about the remarks of Rush and of the demonstrated opinions of so many other righties that they somehow think his remarks credible.

Atlantic City Mayor, Phony Green Beret, Under Investigation... but a Democrat?
By Warner Todd Huston | October 6, 2007 - 04:31 ET
Imagine this scenario: A Republican Mayor of a famous city lies about his service in Vietnam and is caught at it but before that revelation comes to light he was already in trouble as he was about to be recalled by the citizenry for commonly being absent at city council meetings. What's more he also presides over a city council that has several members under investigation for sexual misconduct, drunk driving and at least one recent council member who is in jail serving a conviction for bribery. Imagine how the MSM would howl over the Republican "culture of corruption?" And yet, this scenario that I describe actually exists with but one small alteration in the particulars. The mayor in question actually exists. His city council is as corrupt as I describe. Only the mayor is a Democrat instead of a Republican... not that the MSM seems to have noticed.

Once again, the AP seems to have forgotten to mention the party affiliation of a wretchedly corrupt Democrat who is under fire for his perfidy.

AdvertisementYet, with all the fire Rush Limbaugh -- a radio guy with no legislative power -- is under for not saying that soldiers that come out against the war are "phony soldiers," a New Jersey Democrat -- a man who has the reins of power under his control and who really IS a phony soldier -- is forgotten by the wild-eyed media elites.

It seems that, while Mayor Robert Levy, (Democrat - New Jersey) was a decorated U.S. soldier from the Vietnam era, he felt the odd need to embellish his military service by falsely claiming that he was a member of the Green Berets during his tour of duty.

But that is the least of his worries. He is also under scrutiny for being very close with a convicted and jailed former councilman as well as for his spotty attendance record at city council meetings. And, now he seems to have driven off and disappeared. No one has a clue where he went.

And the AP is not the only ones to have forgotten to mention that "D" beside Mayor Levy's name. So did Editor & Publisher,Reuters, USA Today's Blogs, even Fox News seem to have somehow forgotten to mention that Mayor Levy is a Democrat.

So, what's the deal? Is "corruption" only a Republican thing as far as the entire media establishment is concerned? Is Democrat corruption somehow more obviously unconnected with party affiliation than is corruption perpetrated by a politician who happens to be a Republican?

How is it that the MSM feels the need to alert everyone that a corrupt politician is a Republican, but that the same MSM seems never to notice if a corrupt politician is a Democrat?

Should we all just imagine that this is just an accident?

Well, I, for one, would certainly believe it to be merely accidental... if the elves and fairies that wrote the news rode in to work on their unicorns, that is.

Rush Limbaugh said soldiers who disagree with Bush's war are phony soldiers. That's appalling especially when it comes from a draft-dodger. Thanks to Media Matters for reporting this outrage. Limbaugh is a phony patriot and must be exposed for what he is.

Psst...hey, Joe...have you noticed that the more astute liberals on this board have elected to back off this issue (Psychoblues doesn't count; he's more of an ASS-TOOT)? Maybe it has something to do with the easy availability of the ENTIRE TRANSCRIPT, which exposes Democrats as cynical, parse-happy manipulators in whom the truth does not reside.

But, yeah - by all means - let's talk about this some more!

Good, Joe - good! And, I applaud your courageous decision to keep this topic on the front burner.

We should discuss this in a way that is orderly and intelligent - which is to say, from the beginning. What did you think of the MoveOn.org ad in the New York Times - the one where the left smeared and attacked an honorable American military man, before he had spoken as much as a word to Congress? A wise move?

How disingenuous was this leftist attack on Limbaugh? Let us count the ways.

1. Before reviewing the facts of the case, one has to shake his head in disbelief that anyone would accuse Limbaugh of an anti-military bias. A day doesn't go by when he isn't praising our military on his radio program. He's visited the troops on the battlefield in Afghanistan, and brought comfort to our wounded at the Walter Reed Army hospital. He's raised and donated millions to military charities. It is no wonder that he is the single most popular personality on the Armed Forces Radio Network.

2. Less than two minutes after uttering the words "phony soldiers," Limbaugh elaborated on the subject, explaining exactly what he meant by the term. He named one Jesse Macbeth as an example of a phony soldier. Macbeth had become an overnight darling of the far left, a self-described Iraq war veteran and Purple Heart recipient man who posted a YouTube video denouncing American military atrocities he'd witnessed. Except he was never awarded a Purple Heart. He was never in Iraq. In fact, he was never in the military, period. He was tossed out of boot camp after four months. Macbeth is now in prison serving a five-month term for falsifying Army records and applying falsely for veterans' benefits. Limbaugh was right.

Limbaugh also pointed that that he wasn't the first to discuss the Macbeth phony soldier story. Brian Ross had filed a report on this man several nights before, on ABC’s World News. Mr. Ross even used the term "phony soldier" -- and not a soul on the left found fault with that.

3. So the left returned with another charge: Limbaugh had used the plural, "phony soldiers," therefore Limbaugh's sole example -- Macbeth -- was inadequate. So are there any other "phony soldiers" out there? Jeffrey Sullivan, the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Washington, thinks so. Besides prosecuting Macbeth, he's prosecuted another five "phony soldiers." Jim O'Neill, the assistant inspector general for investigations at the Veterans Administration, confirms that the federal government is presently conducting another 60 such "stolen valor" cases. Rush was right, in spades.

And when Rush fought back, that military hawk Sen. Tom Harkin took to the floor of the Senate to denounce him for engaging in a publicity stunt, for ratings. In other words, Rush had no right to defend himself.

4. The left knows Rush was correct, yet, just as with the spurious racist accusations against Bill O'Reilly the week before, the attacks continued for days, unabated. This is no accident, and no coincidence. Yesterday it was MoveOn. Today it's Media Matters. This is the far left at its repugnant worst, perfectly content to destroy a man's reputation through dishonest attacks if it will further its agenda. Josef Stalin would be proud of this movement.

Rush has beaten them all back now. In fact, as with the Petraeus/"Betray Us" attacks by MoveOn, this newest round of attempted character assassination backfired, and did nothing but re-energize conservatives. But this won't stop the left. Tomorrow it will be Sean Hannity, or Mark Levin, or maybe Laura Ingraham. This group plays for keeps.

And what of all those media outlets giving aid and comfort to the leftists who attacked Rush? Now that we know there are several dozen cases of "phony soldier" scandals, just as Rush suggested, how many stories have they devoted to them, thus vindicating Rush? Check for a Jesse Macbeth story in a Nexis database search on CBS, NBC, and NPR. Search Time, Newsweek and USA Today. Look up the Washington Post, the New York Times and USA Today.

You won’t find a one.

NO HE DID NOT

I listened to the broadcast, his remarks were taken out of context.

This is what happened. A caller to his show (a former soldier who served in Iraq, by the way) referred to a certain individual who claimed to have witnessed atrocities while he was stationed in Iraq with an Army Rangers unit. The individual was exposed as a fraud. He was in the military for 40 days, he was a bootcamp wash out. He never was an Army Ranger, he never was in Iraq.

From what I understand, he wasn't the first person to perpetrate a fraud of this sort in order to get publicity.

While the caller was talking about these individuals, Rush interjected "The phony soldiers". He was NOT referring to veterans who oppose the war.

Now you know the truth, if you continue with the "phony soldiers" BS, you're an accomplice to a fraud, not a victim of it.

Learn from this will you? The Left lies, it always lies, it will do anything to get what it wants. To the Left, the ends justify the means. You have been lied to, and, if I were you, I'd be angry with those who lied to me. This is not a matter of politics, this is a matter of honesty.
