It was more likely the disgust expressed even by Democrats that this is simply wrong. The president is about to head out on the campaign trail (https://www.foxnews.com/politics) and had no answer to that objection. In other words, for the first couple, it is a political not a family matter. If it were the latter, they would have done the decent thing years ago.
