The Bush administration has agreed to provide House Speaker Nancy Pelosi with regular access to an Air Force passenger jet, but the two sides are negotiating whether she will get the big aircraft she wants and who she may take as passengers, according to congressional and administration sources.
A congressional source said that Rep. John P. Murtha, chairman of House Appropriations subcommittee on defense, which controls the Pentagon's spending, has telephoned administration officials to urge them to give the speaker what she wants.
The congressional source said Pentagon officials complained that Mr. Murtha, Pennsylvania Democrat, is accusing them of sexism for not immediately heeding her request. ...

The next time I hear about the big spending habits of Republicans, I'll ask them about this....
A single jet costs several thousand dollars an HOUR to fly, millions of dollars a year to maintain (several hours of maintenance are required for each hour of flight). This means that, if the Bush Administration caves, they will have to supply two or more jets for Ms. Multitask (in case one is down for repairs)

I work with a major airline and also worked at an airport fueling corporate jets so I have a little experience around both of the aircraft in question. Hastert flew on Gulfstream 5s, an aircraft that almost anyone but the biggest ego maniacs would feel privelidged to fly on. It has plenty of range to fly nonstop to Japan or India from Washington D.C. and has room for up to 19 passengers. It can also cruise at Mach .87 for 5000 nautical miles! It is easily one of the very finest aircraft flying.
It's not good enough for Queen Pelosi, she wants a 757-200 series. This is a huge aircraft, twice the size of a 737! It will carry 228 passengers, has a slower cruise speed of mach.80 and a much shorter range of 3900 naut. miles. It also burns a tremendous amount of fuel to move that giant mass around. I have downloaded and uploaded these aircraft, it hold 2-300 large pieces of luggage, that might not be enough for her highness.
Why would a Democrat, the party of the little guy, snub the use of a 50,000,000 dollar super corporate jet? Could it be an ego problem?

White House defends Pelosi plane request
By JIM KUHNHENN, Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON - The White House on Thursday defended House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (news, bio, voting record) against Republican criticism that her desire to fly in an Air Force transport plane is an extravagance.
"This is a silly story and I think it's been unfair to the speaker," White House spokesman Tony Snow said.
Some Republicans are taking issue with the size of the plane Pelosi has requested. Pelosi, a Democrat, asked for access to a C-32, a military version of the Boeing 757-200, that could fly to her hometown of San Francisco without refueling.
"It's not a question of size, it's a question of distance," Pelosi said Wednesday.
"We want an aircraft that can reach California."
The Pentagon this week informed Pelosi's staff that she would be provided with a plane but that its size would be based on availability and that it could not guarantee nonstop service.
After the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the Pentagon agreed to provide the House speaker, who is second in the line of presidential succession, with a military plane for added security during trips back home.
Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert, an Illinois Republican, flew in a small commuter-sized Air Force jet.
Rep. Adam Putnam (news, bio, voting record) of Florida, the No. 3 Republican leader, called Pelosi's desire for a large transport plane "an extravagance of power that the taxpayers won't swallow."
"It's important we see what the specific request was," Putnam said.
But Snow on Thursday said the negotiations over Pelosi's transport have been conducted solely by the House sergeant-at-arms and the Pentagon, with no direct involvement by the speaker or her office — or the White House.
The guidelines provided by the Pentagon say Pelosi could be accompanied by family members, provided they pay the government coach fare. The plane could not be used for travel to political events. Members of Congress could accompany her on the plane if the travel is cleared by the House ethics committee.

I looked at the specs on the U.S. Air Force C-20 and it is actually a Gulfstream 3 or 4. The Nautical mile range on that model is 3,700 miles. If fighting a head wind in the winter going west they would probably need to stop for fuel. What is truely a joke is the fact that Pelosi is claiming it's about security. How many bases between D.C. and San Francisco are there. Wouldn't that be a secure enough refueling spot if needed? If it is actually a need for human range extending we now know that even astronauts wear diapers so shouldn't Pelosi use that option?
The Air Force does have the C-37 which is the Gulfstream 5 and has a longer range of 6,500 nautical miles, that will probably be what she will get.
Here is a picture of the C-20.

The C-31 Hastert flew has a range of 2300 miles, just shy of San Fran. However, there are slightly larger versions in the Air Force which have larger fuel tanks, and nothing more. The one she wants is a frickin' 757, so she can take her entire staff. The Gulfstream costs $9000/hour. The 757 costs $22,000/hour and has a stateroom, bedroom, shower, game room, comm center, 50 seats min/111 max. All in all, it's a difference of $300,000 per one way trip. The 757 is also the LARGEST plane in the fleet capable of the trip.
I don't have a link right now, as I heard it on the radio.
As far as refueling, let's assume that the 757 is the ONLY way to get across the country non-stop. There's 8 top security Air Force bases along the way. If they're secure enough for stealth bombers, why not the Speaker of the House? Is it really worth $300,000 a pop to save Pelosi a little refueling time? If so, why not do a mid-air refueling? It's cheaper.
Edit: In a post 9/11 world, I have no problem giving the Speaker of the House a private jet. She's second in line for the presidency and needs the security.

Pelosi wants to fly nonstop, she said that if the Pentagon provided plane won't do it, she'll continue to use commercial airlines, as she has since first elected.
It's the security, not the "outrageous" demands of a liberal.

Refueling wastes time--I like non-stop too.
She is a waste of time..... flying to San Francisco is a waste of time. A fuel stop at an airbase on the way would easily be made up for by cranking up the speed a little. The Gulfstream at higher speed is much more economical than a 757 at economy speed. Even if a fuel stop was needed it would be quicker in the C-20. If she had a clue about the difference in models of the same aircraft she would know that the C-37 is a Gulfstream 5 and has a range of 6,500 miles and uses a fraction of the resources of the enormous C-32(757).
Anyone who wants to fly can fly non-stop.
Yes, if they are Speaker of the House they can either fly on a plane that is offered to them for free by the public or buy a ticket from an airline.

If she had a clue about the difference in models of the same aircraft she would know that the C-37 is a Gulfstream 5 and has a range of 6,500 miles and uses a fraction of the resources of the enormous C-32(757).
Yes, if they are Speaker of the House they can either fly on a plane that is offered to them for free by the public or buy a ticket from an airline.
No, she is being lambasted because she is a hypocritical, elitist snob and an idiot. Just like Algore flying back and forth across the country to preach to idiots about something he obviously doesn't understand when a film does the same thing wthout the fossil fuel use or the pollution.

And she said she would fly commercial. So why are you all still screaming??
:tinfoil:
That was her variation of the classic and childish.....If I can't have my way I'm gonna take my ball and go home!
She knows that she will not be allowed to disrupt commercial airlines by bringing what I'm sure is an entourage befitting an ego of a Queen, so she will lease the aircraft her limited knowledge tells her is best(she will look for the biggest with the right color paint to match her favorite wardrobe color) and then bill the citizens of our country(people like her never actually pay for anything). She will no doubt confer with fellow horse's ass elitist(who also just happens to have a horse face) John"I went to Vietnam"Kerry-Heinz and find out how his campaign 757 was outfitted and where he got it. She will then spend months with her interior and fashion designers creating a show piece interior( in preperation to have it on the cover of Vanity Fair) to match the perfect exterior paint scheme and make it as opulent as it needs to be to match her ego, money no object.
The fact of the matter is....she is not very intelligent, she equates size with an aircraft's ability to fly across the country nonstop, she no doubt also equates the safety of an aircraft by it's size not realizing that something that weighs 255,000 pounds becomes a rock when it loses propulsion. She also doesn't care how much an hour the taxpayers have to pay for her to be able to impress her elitist "friends". Anyone that would call a Gulfsream 5 a "little plane" definitely is an imbecile and shouldn't have the ability to spend anyone elses money....period.

Besides, it's true. I'm all for showing compassion to victims, but when those victims insert themselves into the political arena, they open themselves up to criticism. Cindy Sheehan and the Jersey Girls turned their loved ones' deaths into circus sideshows and political campaign tours. There's no criticism I can give which will dishonor the deaths of their family members more than what they've already done.
And Michael J. Fox deserved what he got. The bill he advertised was a cloning bill, not a stem cell bill, and he failed to support Republican governors in other states who supported stem cells, even though he campaigned for every Democrat governor who supported stem cells. And yes, he did go off one of his meds so he would look worse for the camera, and, just like Rush, I don't see anything wrong with that. It's hard to get sympathy for your disease if you look fine.
You are not making a very good case for the left being kinder and gentler, when you tell a poster to wallow in his own filth.

Libs bellowed how Pelosi (like Shrillery) is such a strong women - now the twit is playing the victim card
"I am happy to ride commercial coast to coast," Pelosi said, sounding not very happy as she went on to suggest that she was being denied the same privileges provided her predecessor.
"I'm not saying that I am being discriminated against because I am a woman," she said. "I'm just saying as the first woman speaker, I have no intention of having less respect for the office I hold than all of the other speakers that have come before me."
She sniped at Republicans who have spent several days accusing her of excess, saying they "have nothing to say to the American people about the war, the economy, global warming and the rest. So they have this game they're playing."
She then suggested the Defense Department had deliberately mischaracterized her request for clarification of the rules on the use of military jets as a request for a big plane.
"Why are they feeding the flames?" Pelosi asked.
She offered an answer: payback for her vocal criticism that former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld mishandled the Iraq war.
On the House floor, Republicans took a bill about alternative fuel and turned it into a debate on Pelosi's transportation arrangements, by introducing an amendment that included the word "aircraft." That was enough to provide conservative members an opportunity to characterize her as the Leona Helmsley of Capitol Hill.
Now, it is another right wing conspiracy. Hey Pelosi, if you would check your huge ego at the door this never would have happened. Take Shrillery's brrom and save the taxpayers some money.
I thought these huge jets were causing "global warming". I am willing to give Pelosi a bike to use to go back to SF. This is the mode of transportation libs tell us to use

Pelosi One encounters turbulence
By Dale McFeatters
Sunday, February 11, 2007
New House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is nothing if not combative.
Even as she was being elected speaker, she unsuccessfully tried to oust her No. 2, the current House Democratic leader, Steny Hoyer, in favor of her own candidate. She forced her fellow Californian, Jane Harman, off the House Intelligence Committee, where Harman was in line to become chairman. Then she got into a fight with the powerful and senior-most House Democrat, John Dingell, by trying to carve out a chunk of turf from his Energy and Commerce Committee.
These fights could perhaps be excused as necessary for Pelosi to exert control over her unruly charges and, as one of her predecessors as speaker, Tip O’Neill, once said, politics ain’t beanbag.
But now Pelosi has picked a fight that can only embarrass her and gladden the hearts of House Republicans.
She is demanding - and, given her style, “demand” is the correct verb - that the Pentagon supply her with an airliner-size jet, the military version of a Boeing 757, to fly her to and from her San Francisco district. Gleeful Republican critics are calling it “Pelosi One.”
For security reasons, the Pentagon provides the speaker, the third in line to the presidency, secure transportation to and from the home district. It did so for the former speaker, Republican Dennis Hastert.
But the Pentagon, as with Hastert, is offering commuter jets with space for no more than 10 passengers. Republicans charge that Pelosi wants the larger aircraft so she can load it up with family members and political donors, but the speaker’s office says it’s a matter of security because a smaller jet has to stop to refuel en route.
One Republican-allied group weighed in, decrying the “42 leather business-class seats, a fully enclosed stateroom for Nancy Pelosi, stewards who serve meals and tend an open bar, and other such luxuries aboard.”
Maybe that’s a little overwrought, but Pelosi should know from what happened to the House Republicans last November that voters resent what they saw as the GOP’s overweening sense of entitlement and privilege. Indeed, one of her first acts as speaker was to push through a ban on the cherished perk of lawmakers accepting rides on corporate jets.
Fly the commuter jet, Madame Speaker, and just be glad that you don’t have to stand in long lines, endure long delays and get crammed in coach like, well, like the voters.
