that a thread where someone happy about giving up pornography degenerated into personal attacks. granted alot of them came from the originator of the thread at the end. but im still rather disappointed.

we could have talked about a serious issue that is destroying families, men, and women.

instead it turns into a fighting match.

There are three points from the thread that I think need to be emphasized.

The issue that I was trying to steer that other thread to was porn movies vs soft porn. Someone brought up Page3. That's obviously soft porn; softer, say than when Playboy use to be when I was a kid. These are topless shots that show off the beauty of young women.

At one time, pornography was illegal to produce, possess or distribute. Somehow, the Supreme Court decided that pornography was "free speech" and protected by the First Amendment.

My understanding is that original intent of the First Amendment protection to free speech applied only to political speech. I can rationalize how flag burning is protected by the First Amendment but I can't understand how pornography is.

With that being the case, pornography should not be protected at the Federal level. However, I can see communities deciding on what constitutes obscenity. By doing this, one avoids the danger that a centralized government declares any speech it does not approve of as "pornographic" in order to shut down political opposition. Porn is about sex, sex is about being human. If someone is fixated on porn to the exclusion of real life sex then it's a problem for them and for whoever they are with.

If they're single and not seeing anyone then it's a problem for them only and if it gets in the way of a normal life, like any other addiction, it needs treatment. That's not a moral statement, it's a therapeutic one.
