IMO not too much, though enough that it be readable. Some do not qualify, though their ideas may be ok. There are reasons for spell/grammar check, utilize them if you need them.

I'll admit that when I bother to write something long and original, I do it in Word, check it, then copy and paste. Only seems respectful to those that may read.

Needs to be readable not the long runon sentences of a 1st grader that 666 is fond of.

Yes, it is important. If you want to get your message across and be respected, you need to present it well. A poorly written message will tend to make the reader think more about your lack of abilities than about your message. IMHO

It should not matter if the message can be understood, but it does matter.

For instance, just look at how people treat truthmatters on this board and on the other boards I know her from. She is very bad at spelling and a poor typist. Most of us tend to discount her message (even some calling her stupid, idiotic, moron etc) simply because she can't spell. Okay, well, some do it because of her extreme left wing tendencies but the spelling definitely contribut to the treatment she receives. :D

If you consider that the impression we get of one another is based on the written word, I have to say that spelling and grammar definitely matter.

It's bullshit to ignore a well intentioned post by bitching about it's format instead of dealing with the content. I try to type thoughts out quickly and make typos all the time--soem I can catch and correct--sometimes I don't giva shit.

I agree, but it happens.

Tell me, were those intentional because of the subject matter or did you just not giva[sic] crap? :D

IMO his was a perfect example of those I don't care about regarding spelling or grammar. The simple reason is that he was able to make his point, the errors didn't take away from that.

I agree and we all make those kinds of errors. Those are not a big deal.

The problem I see is for some who consistantly make the same errors over and over again. It does affect how they are seen on the boards. My example of truthmatters is a case in point. She's a good person and tries hard. If she didn't have the spelling and typing problems she would be much more respected on the boards despite her far left point of view, but because she does have these problems, she is ridiculed consistantly.

Actually, I think TM is probably someone I'd love to be friends with. On the other hand, I doubt her problems here have to do with style, moreso substance.

I've "known" TM for probably four years on different boards. Yes, I think I would love to be friends with her as well. She has a great heart and generally seems to care for others. But, I have seen post after post after post deriding her for her spelling abilities rather than the substance of her posts.

Not that she never gets taken down for her substance, but rather she is more often than not clobbered for her poor spelling. It is really sad to be honest with you.

People attack the style when they get tired of headbanging walls with TM. We must agree to disagree, since I think she DOES get her points across.

Add this to the list:

I could care less. (this phrase would imply that you care, perhaps not much, but you do care)

as opposed to

I couldn't care less. (this phrase would imply that there is no way that you could care any less than you do already)

You can also add there and their.

I agree with Immie that, while not necessarily indicative of the poster's intelligence, bad spelling/grammar does indeed tend to distract the reader and, to some degree, dilute the impact of the message.

This is especially true when the mistakes occur on a regular basis.
