Can you really pick one? I don't think I can.

However, one song does come to mind for me, and that's "Crying," sang in duet by the king of voice Roy Orbison, and a very good voice match K.D. Lang.

"Like a Rolling Stone," Bob Dylan. When I hear that opening drum crack I know it's the best popular song I've ever heard.

How 'bout that... you like country music. I like it too, but mostly the old stuff. I swear 99% of all the new stuff all sounds the same. Cookie cutter music, and they're all trying too hard to sound NOT sound country, like that little queer band "RASCAL flats." They're "rascals" alright. They sound more like "boyz to men" than they do country.

Gimme some old Patsy Cline, or Jim Reeves, or Don Williams, etc..

Yeah, I'm Country actually more Country Rock: Charlie Daniels, Alabama and the OLD Country music like David Allen Coe, Johnny Paycheck, Johnny Cash etc. The new stuff... some of it is okay, I like Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift. I didn't like Toby Keith at first but his music has grown on me.

I've never been a fan of Rascal Flats, but they don't bother me.

I still listen to country music radio stations, but the bulk of it I don't like. All I can think is it's better than rap, which if I'm subjected to for more than a couple seconds, I'll puke... :puke: - :p

this is an incredible song, extremely hard for any singer...though my husband, who is a singer/songwriter ...can do a pretty damn good job at it!!!(if he does vocal exercises ahead of time) :)

Hey dan, do you have the Pet Sounds box set? There are three discs...maybe four. One disc is the original album, another disc is a stereo recording, and my favorite disc is vocals only. It is a wonderful example of the vocal talents the Beach boys had and they do God Only Knows.

As for a favorite song, I can't pick just one, though the song on my iPod that has the most plays is Summertime from Porgy & Bess. I have the Billy Stewart recording of the song.

And you can throw in the entire Jimmy Buffett catalogue.

Power Ballads?

I didn't know rock had ballads. To have a ballad one must tell a story. Modern rock music doesn't even have lyrics let alone tell a story, just a whole bunch of screaming and no words. Blech!! And if there were words, you wouldn't even be able to hear them because rockers think to be good you have to play it so loud that no one can understand what your saying anyway.

american pie by don mclean, which he wrote about buddy holly i a pretty damn good song ballad too

Tile :Don McLean - American Pie
This is lyrics from www.lyrics007.com

A long, long time ago...
I can still remember
How that music used to make me smile.
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And, maybe, they’d be happy for a while.

But february made me shiver
With every paper I’d deliver.
Bad news on the doorstep;
I couldn’t take one more step.

I can’t remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride,
But something touched me deep inside
The day the music died.

So bye-bye, miss american pie.
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
And them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
Singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.
"this’ll be the day that I die."

Did you write the book of love,
And do you have faith in God above,
If the Bible tells you so?
Do you believe in rock ’n roll,
Can music save your mortal soul,
And can you teach me how to dance real slow?

Well, I know that you’re in love with him
`cause I saw you dancin’ in the gym.
You both kicked off your shoes.
Man, I dig those rhythm and blues.

I was a lonely teenage broncin’ buck
With a pink carnation and a pickup truck,
But I knew I was out of luck
The day the music died.

I started singin’,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
And singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.
"this’ll be the day that I die."

Now for ten years we’ve been on our own
And moss grows fat on a rollin’ stone,
But that’s not how it used to be.
When the jester sang for the king and queen,
In a coat he borrowed from james dean
And a voice that came from you and me,

Oh, and while the king was looking down,
The jester stole his thorny crown.
The courtroom was adjourned;
No verdict was returned.
And while lennon read a book of marx,
The quartet practiced in the park,
And we sang dirges in the dark
The day the music died.

We were singing,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
And singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.
"this’ll be the day that I die."

Helter skelter in a summer swelter.
The birds flew off with a fallout shelter,
Eight miles high and falling fast.
It landed foul on the grass.
The players tried for a forward pass,
With the jester on the sidelines in a cast.

Now the half-time air was sweet perfume
While the sergeants played a marching tune.
We all got up to dance,
Oh, but we never got the chance!
`cause the players tried to take the field;
The marching band refused to yield.
Do you recall what was revealed
The day the music died?

We started singing,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
And singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.
"this’ll be the day that I die."

Oh, and there we were all in one place,
A generation lost in space
With no time left to start again.
So come on: jack be nimble, jack be quick!
Jack flash sat on a candlestick
Cause fire is the devil’s only friend.

Oh, and as I watched him on the stage
My hands were clenched in fists of rage.
No angel born in hell
Could break that satan’s spell.
And as the flames climbed high into the night
To light the sacrificial rite,
I saw satan laughing with delight
The day the music died

He was singing,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
And singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.
"this’ll be the day that I die."

I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news,
But she just smiled and turned away.
I went down to the sacred store
Where I’d heard the music years before,
But the man there said the music wouldn’t play.

And in the streets: the children screamed,
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed.
But not a word was spoken;
The church bells all were broken.
And the three men I admire most:
The father, son, and the holy ghost,
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the music died.

And they were singing,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
And them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
Singin’, "this’ll be the day that I die.
"this’ll be the day that I die."

They were singing,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."

I'd heard about that, but hadn't checked it out. I would like to hear that vocals-only disc. Pretty much every song on that album has some new layer to it that I hear whenever I listen to it, which to me is a sign of great music. Look at it like this: there wasn't an album that sounded like Pet Sounds before it, and there hasn't been one since. That's a major accomplishment, especially in the world of pop music.

Jungleland by Bruce Springsteen.
One of the most magnificent songs ever written. A symphony, opera and rock opus combined into one epic 10-minute piece.

Won't Get Fooled Again by The Who.
The anger and bitterness of a generation, defined in one song.

You Oughta Know by Alanis Morissette
Because guys needs to know how we feel sometimes

Won't Get Fooled Again is a great one. For me, though, Baba O'Reilly is the better song, Won't Get Fooled Again gets slightly repetetive, although the end of the song (meet the new boss/same as the old boss) is one of my favorite moments in any song, and I think Keith Moon's drumming was never better.

CCR? John Fogerty? Hard to pick? Man is it easy to fuck you up!!!!!!!!!

And I think CCR would have to be up there with an all time favorite, but they had so many I liked... again... hard to pick.

I don't think I ever heard a CCR or a John Fogerty jamm that was difficult in any way to play. Whatever?!?!?!?!?!?!?

I have favorites in many genres. Just for a favorite to play I stick with Western Swing and Big Band but my all time favorite to listen to and play is Allman Brothers "Ain't My Cross To Bare". I dig the tension/extended chordation and simple but serious lyrics.

Have you ever listened to "My Mama Done Told Me" by many artists? That is a jamm worth noting here.
