Organ Recipients Infected With HIV
First Time HIV Has Been Spread In Organ Transplants Since 1985

CHICAGO (CBS) ? As many as four Chicago area organ transplant recipients have contracted AIDS-causing HIV from an infected donor.

As CBS 2's Kristyn Hartman reports, this is the first transmission of HIV as a result of tainted organ transplants since 1985.

The Elmhurst-based Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donor network is lined with pictures of people who live today because of some kind of organ transplant.

"Our mission is to save and enhance the lives of as many people as possible," said Gift of Hope Vice President of Operations Alison Smith.

But not every case is a success story. Smith said the organization recently learned that four organ recipients at Rush University Medical Center, the University of Chicago Hospitals, and Northwestern Memorial Hospital, contracted HIV hepatitis C from a donor.

The four patients infected patients did not learn of their status until the last two weeks, according to medical officials.

"We are extremely distraught over this," Smith said.

The donor was tested to rule out the presence of any transmissible disease. Tests for HIV, hepatitis and other conditions came back negative, possibly because the donor had acquired the infections in the last three weeks before death, or because the tests might not have picked up the diseases.

"Those tests are not infallible," Smith said. "There are limitations to those tests."

Personal details about the donor were not released by medical officials, who cited privacy laws. But the donor was described as someone in a high-risk

The transplants occurred in January at three Chicago hospitals, but the person who gave the gift of life in this case had been determined on a screening questionnaire to be in a high-risk behavior category. Smith said across the country, about 9 percent of all donors fall into that group.

twood suck...if I were to die w/o a transplant, I suspect I'd choose life with HIV over death. Course, it's not like those folk GOT that choice. :-/

Ohh enlitend one who should pay these millions???

Did you read the whole story or are you just going off thetitle.

The person who donated his organs tested NEGATIVE for hep C and HIV. He contracted the HIV within 3 weeks of dying. So sense there was no way to tell he had these conditions who should pay the millions you speak of.

You do realize that most transplant patients do not live long lives post transplant. These people will unfortunately die of complications from the transplant way before any thing to do with HIV/AIDS

So once again who should pay the millions you speak of. The donor for participaiting in dangerous behavior, the doctors who performed the transplant with no prior knowledge of the donors condition, the family of the donor, or the hospital who once again had no prior knowledge of the donor condition or behavior, or should you and I as tax payers pay out this majical millions you speak of.....:poke::slap:

You know what Obama08, sometimes shit just happens with no one to really blame. Sometimes you just have to deal with what happens without having to sue everyone for everything. This is the problem with a lot of people who think there is always someone to blame when in reality there isn't.

You and others like you need to get off this someone always has to pay thing. For the record, NO SOMEONE DOES NOT ALWYS HAVE TO PAY.. Life isn't fair and sometimes it just sucks...

Just a thought - if Gay is Genetic, would somebody getting a 'gay' kidney develop homosexual tendencies?

how do you know the kidney is queer? I don't know, but still it would be a good guess: "the person who gave the gift of life in this case had been determined on a screening questionnaire to be in a high-risk behavior category."
