Officer: Missing Wife Wanted Divorce

2007-11-14 10:08:06

NEW YORK (AP) — An Illinois police officer who is suspected in the disappearance of his fourth wife said Wednesday that she had asked him for a divorce — but he thought it was due to hormones.

Drew Peterson told NBC's "Today" that his wife fell into a deep depression after her sister died of cancer, and had been taking medication. They often had fights after that, he said.

"I'm not trying to be funny, but Stacy would ask me for divorce after her sister died on a regular basis," Peterson said. "It was based on her menstrual cycle."

Stacy Peterson, 23, was last seen Oct. 28. Authorities say the case is a potential homicide investigation and have identified her husband, a 53-year-old police sergeant in the Chicago suburb of Bolingbrook, as a suspect. Her husband believes she left him for another man, and said that he has no plans to look for her because he thinks she left willfully.

They exhumed the body of his third wife, whom had divorced him though the financials hadn't been worked out yet, so they were still in contact. He found her, dead in dry bathtub. Gash in the back of her head-though shouldn't have rendered her unconscious. The death had been ruled 'accidental drowning', the current DA has reopened it, as it's impossible for a conscious adult to drown in a bathtub. It's also funny that there was no water...

He is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. They haven't found a body. Do I think he is guilty, hell yes, but our laws protect him until he is charged and convicted.

Here's CNN's coverage of the story.

Bolingbrook is about 20 minutes south of me. This has been a big story for 3 weeks.

You are only innocent until proven guilty if you are not suspected of terrorism or a sex crime.

If she had just taken off with another guy like he said, she would have called someone by now. It's not like she would hear about the searching on the news. She's dead somewhere and he's responsible.
