I don't know if there is a thread like this elsewhere on the site, but I've been thinking about some goals of mine that I'd like to achieve in life. Some things, big and small, that I'd like to do or learn before I die.

1. Achieve peak physical fitness for atleast a short time. Stamina, muscle, diet, etc. Maybe run in a local triathlon or three.
2. Learn jujitsu or some other martial art.
3. Participate in an archaeological excavation.
4. Learn and be fluent in a foreign language or three.
5. Live on the West Coast. (This one may happen soon actually.)
6. Scale a mountain or volcano.
7. Build a house. (I've already almost finished renovating one.)
8. Go back to school for a higher degree than just Bachelor's. Maybe actually study for the LSAT this time ;)
9. Catch a Marlin.
10. Learn to weld.
11. Restore an old Porsche.
12. Embark on a cross country motorcycle journey--see the sights.

I think these are doable and not too far-fetched. What about you guys? Do any of ya'll have a list like this and have you fulfilled any of the things on it yet?

Wow, I feel like such a slackard.

1. I want to influence those I come in contact with for the good. I want them to remember that I added something special to their lives.
2. Want to help my partner achieve some of the goals he has.
3. R-e-a-l-l-y want to move to a warmer climate.
4. Having less financial worries would be good, too.

I've decided to go on a week-long mission trip to Honduras in February so that'll be a chance for me to atleast begin competency on number four on my list.

with all due respect, as an amatuer genealogist i have a hard time believing you have an entire side of your family tree done. There just arent enough records for that available:)

You're right I don't have the "entire side", just the continuation of lineage.

I was contacted by a distant relative in Austria two years ago. He's semi-retired and took on the project of researching our family name as far back as the records are available, and contacted me to find some of the branches in the US. He's got me back 9 generations to 1640's to a village in south Germany. He's also located a broken branch rooted in a German village about 30 miles away, to the 1420's. As we have a very uncommon name it is no doubt the same lineage, but we don't know the connection.

I recently subscribed to Ancestry.com for one year to try and define my Mom's side as far as I can. Unfortunately I've run into a dead-end in only two generations, in Nova Scotia, where half the village has the same last name as my maternal grandfather.

Sorry, I snipped everything. I focused on 12. Immediately I saw it I was reminded of "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" (yes I know everyone has read it) but it also sparked in me the memory of the American chautauqua movement which "Zen" sort of references. A uniquely American movement in adult education, almost a spiritual movement but perhaps something that if you're going to do before you die you should think of. And of course, age is no barrier.

"Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" Awesome book. Use aluminium from a beer can to shim and tighten a handlebar.

His practicality was quite amazing, I was continually taken with his detailed, almost matter-of-fact explanations about motorcycle things that would have me (a) scratching my head and (b) telephoning the AAA (it being the US). But in spite of myself I remember reading those detailed expositions of how to fix the motorcycle and somehow linking them back to more metaphysical things. To this day I think it's a tour de force of literature and in just, well, thinking. I still love the book.

My Dad read this book last year I believe. What's weird is that he cited the same passage about shimming with an aluminum can when he was telling me about it. :dunno: Must be a memorable passage.
