Teacher sued for rants against South, church, Limbaugh

Heres one for you TM i think he might just be right up your ally or hell he might even be related with the way he thinks....

The classroom rantings of a teacher in a California school district who targeted the South, church, Republicans, Christians, conservatives and Rush Limbaugh have triggered a First Amendment lawsuit, according to Advocates for Faith and Freedom, an advocacy law firm.

The teacher, James Corbett of the Capistrano Unified School District, "spends an extended period of time at the beginning of each class discussing topics that are not only irrelevant to history but also inflammatory and often altogether inappropriate for high school students," the firm's announcement said.

"Corbett causes students who hold religious beliefs to feel like second-class citizens because of their protected religious expression, beliefs and conduct.

"He has gone as far as stating, 'When you put on your Jesus glasses, you can't see the truth,'" the law firm said.

Among the statements made by the teacher:

What part of the country has the highest murder rate? The South. What part of the country has the highest rape rate? The South. What part of the country has the highest … church attendance? The South. Oh, wait a minute. You mean there is not a correlation between these things …
You know, you go down to Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, all these states that are as red as they could possibly be, as right-wing Republican as you could possibly be. When you first present these people with the economic policies of the Democratic party, they are all Democrats. Virtually all the social programs, they like. They lead the Democratic party on social issues. That's it. Social issues, can you imagine what they're saying on Rush Limbaugh now? About, 'Middle school people in New England giving people birth control pills. My God. What next?' I love Rush Limbaugh. A fat, pain in the a—liar. And, boy, is he a liar. Unbelievable."

Ummm, I dunno...

Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Hillary Clinton, Ted Kennedy, John Kerry, Charles Rangel, Diane Feinstein, Barbara Boxer.

But I guess in the minds of liberals it's ok to speak out against a perceived wrong, but not ok for someone else to do so?

Interesting find, Nukeman. In addition to the inappropriateness of the rants, we can only wonder how much history these kids are not learning while he takes away class time for this tripe.

absolutely brilliant, what our good friend hagline doesnt understand is that you can passionently stand up for what you believe in, and still not threaten or physical harm anyone.

Thanks and that is pretty much what I was thinking as well. Teachers really need to realize that the classroom is not their own personal soap box. They are there to...... dare I say it....*gasp* TEACH. It boggles my mind that there are some who think that since they have a captive audience taht they are welcome to say what ever they want.

For the record I also hate it when performers do this. If I wanted to hear a politicle speach I would go to one. If I pay good money for a concert, shut the f**k up and play the music...

I really have a hard time believing that the rural south has higher rates of rape, murder etc. than extremely populated cities. I would love to see the statistics for this.

My thought exactly.

As for the lawsuit, I would say it is a bunch of crap. Let this jerk have his say. Let him rant against faith all he wants in the long run he'll end up looking like the bigot he is and the students will learn what bigotry is all about. I would venture to say that the discussion of current events like this goes more to teaching these kids what is going on in the world than having them read 1,000 history books as much as I like history books.

It's their jobs to debate and argue over issues genius. They're elected to do so. AS ARE REPUBLICAN POLITICIANS. You guys on the other hand are "normal" citizens with normal jobs. Yet you seem to actively seek-out confrontational situations so that you can yell at or about other people. What kind of person does that sort of thing? I just imagine a horde of rip-roaring assh*les walking around the country smacking the drinks out of people's hands, spitting chaw on people's shoes and surveying their surroundings for anything and everything they can find to b*tch about. Climbing flagpoles and ripping Mexican flags off the mast like Pale's friend, calling long distance numbers and giving some poor receptionist a piece of your mind over an issue you saw on Fox News, spending your Saturday mornings sitting in a folding chair with a shotgun on the border looking for illegal immigrants and carrying pistols into shopping malls in the hope that you'll be able to dish-out some vigilante justice. Wtf?

Yet you were one of the ones who had no problem not worrying about how much science the kids were not learning when schoolboards in Kansas and Pennsylvania wanted to inject creationism into the curriculum. I agree with you on this issue, but you've got to acknowledge the double standard you're perpetrating here. The only problem you have with this is that it is anti-religious. If it were the other way around you'd have no problem and you'd be totally opposed to even considering the other point of view.

Oh yea, Celine, the open minded guy that is just all about getting along.
Go back to drinking with the frat boys and working on your flip house while the adults try to keep some of what has made this country great alive.

If I was the principle of his school I would have dragged him in front of his class and made him apologuise to his students for insulting their religion.

And by the end of the day you would be on the unemployment line. The teacher's union would eat you for lunch. Also, he is not promoting one religion over another. I don't agree with what this guy says, but suing him will only make him a left wing martyr (maybe that is what you want, heh?). Let him prove himself to be a bigot is what I say.

fyi- if this info is true, it is quite apparent that the south has the highest murder rate, the new england states are the safest place to live overall if you don't want to be murdered, and the death penalty does not deter murderers.

When it comes to bad teachers, yes. If, we as parents, continue to make complaints about this crap going on at schools around the country, maybe they'll finally listen and get this kind of nonsense put to a halt. It's EVERYONE'S duty to ensure these children have a proper chance at an education, and not going to school for biased lectures.

what happens somewhere else, doesnt stay in a bubble, it affects other places.

See abortion for example, it didnt stay in the first place it happened, it branched out.

radical islam doesnt stay in one place either, that why u dont ignore things, just because they dont happen to you

Nope you are buying the lies the right tells you.

http://www.aclufightsforchristians.com/

I posted a partial list of the cases
THE ACLU FIGHTS FOR CHRISTIANS

The ACLU fights just as hard for INDIVIDUAL free exercise of religion as the ACLU fights against GOVERNMENT endorsement, sponsorship, or establishment of religion. Despite this fact, many people spread misinformation about the ACLU around the internet, innocently and maliciously, falsely claiming the ACLU is anti-religion or anti-Christian.

This list of FACTS counteracts that misinformation. These links represent just a few of the many examples of the ACLU defending the free speech and free exercise rights of Christians (for purposes of this list, the word “Christian” means a person who self-identifies as “Christian”).

In every example, the ACLU is defending the right of a Christian to speak as a Christian or to practice Christianity.

Here is the current version of this EVER GROWING list:

ACLU Champions Religious Freedom Of Mormon College Student

ACLU Fights for Christian Church's Mission to Feed the Poor

ACLU Fights for Christmas Tree

ACLU Files Suit to Protect Free Speech Rights of Christian Protesting Wal-Mart's Policy on Gays

ACLU of Georgia and Baptist Church File Religious Discrimination Lawsuit

ACLU of New Jersey Joins Lawsuit Supporting Second-Grader's Right to Sing "Awesome God" at Talent Show

After ACLU Intervention on Behalf of Christian Valedictorian, Michigan High School Agrees to Stop Censoring Religious Yearbook Entries

ACLU Helps Free New Mexico Street Preacher From Prison

ACLU of WA Wins Right of Christian Minister to Preach in Spokane Plaza

ACLU Fights for Baptist Preacher in Illinois

ACLU Defends Rights of Christian Group to Make Religious Protest at Funerals

ACLU Backs Christian Abortion Protester in Ohio

ACLU of Oregon Defends Religious Liberty Of Adventist School Boys Basketball Players

ACLU Backs Missouri Nurse Penalized for Wearing Cross-Shaped Lapel Pin

I guess technically and philosophically your post here is correct. But my question is this: are the kids really the reason you call cross country to rant and rave or is it simply because you like to beat your chest and rant and rave at things big and small that "outrage" you? I think these kids are outside your monkeysphere and are therefore simply an idea--one dimensional charicatures of the apple-pie-eating American children you imagine in your mind. Do you have any idea what will happen if these "Faith and Freedom" jihadists get their way in a lawsuit? The school district loses money, and there will be still more cutbacks.

But hey, having the next generation poorly educated is music to the ears of fundamentalists. They'd rapidly go extinct if nobody were ignorant.
