Riots grip Stockholm suburbs after police shooting

Rioters have lit fires and stoned emergency services in the suburbs of Stockholm for the third night in a row after a man was shot dead by police.


Incidents were reported in at least nine suburbs of the Swedish capital and police made eight arrests.
On Sunday night, more than 100 cars were set alight, Swedish media report.


Police in the deprived, largely immigrant suburb of Husby shot a man dead last week after he reportedly threatened to kill them with a machete.


The founder of a local youth group told Swedish media the riots were a reaction to "police brutality".
Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt told reporters on Tuesday that Sweden would not be intimidated by rioters.


'Opportunistic'

On Tuesday night, cars were torched in western and southern Stockholm, and stones were thrown at police officers and firefighters. One area affected, Rinkeby, saw similar rioting in 2010.


Kjell Lindgren of the Stockholm police told Aftonbladet newspaper that the unrest had spread from the original rioting in Husby.


"It feels like people are taking the opportunity in other areas because of the attention given to Husby," he said.

Earlier on Tuesday, Prime Minister Reinfeldt said: "We've had two nights with great unrest, damage, and an intimidating atmosphere in Husby and there is a risk it will continue.


"We have groups of young men who think that that they can and should change society with violence. Let's be clear: this is not okay. We cannot be ruled by violence."


More than 80% of Husby's 12,000 or so inhabitants are from an immigrant background, and most are from Turkey, the Middle East and Somalia.

Clutching a bloodied meat cleaver after executing a soldier on a crowded street, he delivers a chilling message of hate.

‘You people will never be safe,’ he declares in a clear south London accent. ‘An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.’

In broad daylight, he and an accomplice had just repeatedly stabbed and tried to behead an off-duty soldier in front of dozens of passers-by.

Throughout the frenzied attack they shouted ‘Allah Akbar’ – Arabic for ‘God is great’ – then demanded horrified witnesses film them as they ranted over the crumpled body.

The two black men in their 20s, waited calmly for armed police to arrive before charging at officers brandishing a rusty revolver, knives and meat cleavers.

When the old pistol was shot towards police it backfired and blew the thumb off one of the men.

Moments later they were cut down in a hail of bullets believed to be fired by a woman marksman. Last night both men were being treated in hospital for their wounds.

Before police arrived one of the killers was filmed giving his warped justification for the sickening attack: ‘We swear by Almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you. The only reasons we have done this is because Muslims are dying every day'

In what has to be one of the lowest moves in parking-enforcement history, New York City ticketed half a dozen cars that had been legally parked only moments before. The difference? The city changed the signs out from under drivers.

Transportation crews came through to change the signs on West 15th and Seventh Avenue for a new bike-share program in the city. When these cars parked they were legal, but after the 'alternate side, Monday and Thursday' signs became 'No Standing Anytime' they were ripe for parking enforcement.

Twenty-five minutes later officers showed up and started dispensing $115 tickets. The only warning drivers received was a paper notice warning cars would be towed if not out by 6 p.m., but this sign shuffle happened 6 hours before that. Drivers and observers told CBS New York that it happened so fast, they felt it was unfair. Drivers can challenge the tickets in court.

No good deed goes unpunished, and Colorado resident Jesus Rivera understands this better than most after becoming a car-theft victim, a crime which left him without a truck and continuing legal troubles.

Rivera witnessed an accident over a year ago while driving near Denver. A man had rolled his car on an interstate and Rivera immediately pulled over to help. After saving the bloodied driver from the upside-down car, Rivera went to find the children the man said were in the back seat. But there were no children in the car, and when Rivera turned around, the driver he just rescued had stolen his truck.

"I don't regret it. I would do it again," Rivera told Colorado 9 News.

In March the National Rifle Association coordinated a demonstration against new gun legislation in Connecticut, the state where 26 children and staff were gunned down at an elementary school in December. Before boarding buses headed for the state capital, gun owners met up at a parking lot in nearby East Hartford--a parking lot owned by sporting goods store Cabela's

The location was no accident--they were guests of the owners. With 40 stores and a strong Internet and mail catalog business, Cabela's sells everything from fishing rods to wool slippers. But guns are the real moneymaker, and while fears of future gun restrictions have spurred sales for the entire industry, no company has benefited quite like Cabela's.

Shares have increased by 95% in the last year and are up more than 70% already in 2013. That makes Cabela's stock the best-performing in the firearms industry and one of the top-performing stocks in the U.S. in the last year. The company's two biggest shareholders, founders Richard and James Cabela, have seen the value of their combined 25% stake jump to $1.2 billion from $750 million at the start of 2013.

About one-third of Cabela's $3.1 billion in sales last year came from firearms, ammunition and accessories, and a substantial amount of its all-important sales growth came from its gun business. Cabela's first-quarter 2013 same-store sales growth was 24%, but it was only 9% excluding firearms and ammunition. The company set a new record for first-quarter revenue, which increased 28.7% to $802.5 million.

It has been an incredible run for the company founded in 1961 by Richard Cabela and his wife, Mary, at their kitchen table in Chappell, Nebr. Within two years younger brother James Cabela joined the catalog business, and the duo eventually moved their headquarters to Sidney, Nebr. and developed stores that have become like shopping amusement parks for sportsmen, known for elaborate taxidermy displays of animals from deer to lions. In addition to its stores and direct-sales channels, Cabela's offers a cobranded Visa credit card and even owns an FDIC-insured bank.

A man was fatally shot when a team of FBI agents swarmed an apartment complex near Universal Studios in Orlando.

The shooting happened early Wednesday.

The FBI did not immediately return a phone call early Wednesday from The Associated Press seeking details. The FBI has not released the name of the suspect who was shot or confirmed the possible connection to the Boston bombing suspects.

But a friend of the victim says that the FBI shot Ibragim Todashev, according to the Orlando Sentinel. He also says that Ibragim Todashev told him that the FBI was questioning him because he was friends with Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the older brother of the Boston Marathon bombing suspect in custody. Both Todashev and Tamerlan Tsarnaev were mixed martial arts boxers.

A man claiming to be the suspect's friend told WFTV reporter Steve Barrett:

"He had a ticket from New York, [and] from there, he was going to go back home [to Chechnya]. They were pushing him, saying, 'Stay, don't leave.' They said, 'We want to interview you one last time and talk to you a last time.' And he decided to stay, and today's interview was supposed to be the last time, and they said they were going to leave him alone," said the victim's friend, Khusen Taramov.

An FBI spokesman told Orlando television stations that their agent was conducting official duties when the shooting occurred. No further details were released, but the agency says an update is expected later Wednesday.

Meanwhile, a judge has agreed to postpone a probable cause hearing for Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Marianne Bowler on Tuesday granted a joint request from prosecutors and defense attorneys to postpone the May 30 hearing until July 2. The lawyers say they need more time to obtain and review evidence, and cited complex legal issues in the case.

BOXER RINGS THE BELL ON CLIMATE CHANGE: Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif. – Chair of Senate Environment & Public Works Committee) took to the Senate floor and invoked the Oklahoma tornadoes in her speech on global warming. “This is climate change,” she said.


“This is climate change. We were warned about extreme weather. Not just hot weather. But extreme weather. When I had my hearings, when I had the gavel years ago. -It’s been a while – the scientists all agreed that what we’d start to see was extreme weather. And people looked at one another and said ‘what do you mean? It’s gonna get hot?’ Yeah, it’s gonna get hot. But you’re also going to see snow in the summer in some places. You’re gonna have terrible storms. You’re going to have tornados and all the rest. We need to protect our people. That’s our number one obligation and we have to deal with this threat that is upon us and that is gonna get worse and worse though the years.”


[Boxer] also plugged her own bill, cosponsored with Sen. Bernie Sanders that would put a tax on carbon. “Carbon could cost us the planet,” she said. “The least we could do is put a little charge on it so people move to clean energy.”

The scandals of the Obama administration seem to be hurting not just the White House but MSNBC as well, while Fox News Channel has just scored its second-best week of the year. After double-digit gains during last year’s presidential election, May 13-17 saw the progressive-aligned “Lean Forward” news network hit new lows as the IRS scandal erupted and revelations that the Justice Department secretly obtained AP records became public. With 350,000 viewers on average and 94,000 in the adults 25-54 demo, MSNBC had its least-watched and lowest-rated total-day results of the year last week. That was also the lowest total-day demo result the network has had since the week of June 26-July 2, 2006, when MSNBC pulled in just 83,000 viewers among adults 25-54, according to Nielsen data.

For MSNBC, last week’s total day results were down 17% in viewers and 22% among the demo from the comparable May 14 to May 18 week of last year. In primetime, the numbers were even worse as a steady decline from the beginning of the year continued. The network had 570,000 total viewers and 159,000 in the demo from 8-11 PM from May 13 to May 17, 2013. That’s the lowest-rated week of the year so far for MSNBC in terms of viewers and the third-lowest of 2013 in the demo. The week of May 6-12 was worst in the demo with 148,000 viewers when the network had 604,000 viewers on average. These latest results come as the news network’s recently launched and struggling All In With Chris Hayes hit a new viewership loss of 396,000 and its second-lowest demo audience of just 88,000 on May 14. It also comes on the heels of MSNBC falling in April ratings from its second place ranking of the year before.

MCKINNEY, Texas - A judge has ruled that a North Texas lesbian couple can't live together because of a morality clause in one of the women's divorce papers.

The clause is common in divorce cases in Texas and other states. It prevents a divorced parent from having a romantic partner spend the night while children are in the home. If the couple marries, they can get out from under the legal provision — but that is not an option for gay couples in Texas, where such marriages aren't recognized.

The Dallas Morning News ( http://dallasne.ws/16MlSUQ) reported that in a divorce hearing last month for Carolyn and Joshua Compton, Collin County District Judge John Roach Jr. enforced the terms detailed in their 2011 divorce papers. He ordered Carolyn Compton's partner, Page Price, to move out of the home they shared with the Comptons' two daughters, ages 10 and 13. The judge gave Price 30 days to find another place to live.

Paul Key said his client, Joshua Compton, wanted the clause enforced for his kids' benefit.

"The fact that they can't get married in Texas is a legislative issue," Key said. "It's not really our issue."

The Comptons had been married for 11 years before their split. Carolyn Compton originally filed for divorce in September 2010.

Roach said the clause doesn't target same-sex couples, adding that the language is gender neutral.

"It's a general provision for the benefit of the children," the judge said.

Price and Carolyn Compton said in a statement that they believe the clause is unconstitutional. But they also said they would comply with the order "even though it will be disruptive to their family and has the potential of being harmful to the children."

They also said in the statement that the clause "is a burden on parents, regardless of their sexual orientation, that takes away and unreasonably limits their ability to make parental decisions of whom their children may be around and unreasonably limits what the United State Supreme Court has identified as the liberty of thought, belief and expression."

A Los Angeles police officer was due in court Tuesday on charges he committed lewd acts on two girls under 10 years old.

Miguel Angel Schiappapietra, a six-year veteran of the LAPD, was arrested Saturday, said LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, on Saturday morning Schiappapietra lured two girls under 10 years old into his home in Castaic and committed lewd acts on them. Authorities declined to elaborate on how he knew the alleged victims.

Schiappapietra was off-duty at the time of his arrest and was booked on suspicion of lewd conduct with children under the age of 14.

The case is being investigated by the Sheriff's Special Victims Unit.

Schiappapietra was booked at the Santa Clarita Valley sheriff's station, and was being held in lieu of $100,000 bail. He was most recently assigned to the Foothill patrol area and is now on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal LAPD investigation, as well as the ongoing criminal matter.
