    Default Ash Wednesday

    Collect:
Almighty and everlasting God, you hate nothing you have made and forgive the sins of all who are penitent: Create and make in me a new and contrite heart, that worthily lamenting my sins and acknowledging my wretchedness, I may obtain of you, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ my Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Totally forgot about it until I was flipping thru the channels and saw a catholic mass where everyone had black smudged on their heads. It was a nice mass except for half the music was in a different language, prolly Latin.

In the morning I took frozen tenderloins out of the freezer and set them in the fridge to defrost for dinner. Wife called me at 10 am because she remembered it was Ash Wednesday. By noon I forgot and had a ham sandwich. Wife cooked meatless spagetti for dinner.

Bless me father for I have sinned....

I kind of miss all those rituals... there is something in practicing those things--- the fasting, the ashes, the liturgy--- inspires reverence. Maybe I'll go to Mass with Mom this weekend.
Blessed be Your name, when the sun's shining down on me, when the world's "all as it should be," blessed be Your name!
Blessed be Your name on the road marked with suffering, though there's pain in the offering, blessed be Your name!
Every blessing You pour out I'll turn back to praise. When the darkness closes in, Lord, still I will say...
Blessed be the name of the Lord!
    Blessed be Your name!

I'm not Catholic or anything, but I am finding that I enjoy the ritual in all of it.

I'm not sure what all it means but it doesn't bother me. I think it is silly and comical. When I see someone with it on their heads I tell them,"hey you have some dirt on your forehead, you need a rag".

Ive always been alittle bugged with the attitude by alot of people with Ash Wednesday. I mean the attitude "Hey lets sin all we want during the Carnival/Mardi Gras and then we will go get our Ashes for Lent and 'give up' our sins for the 40 days of Lent and now I am righteous."

Its like hey you get the Ash on your forehead and now all our sins are in the past attitude I have. People feigning repentence.

I dont have any problem with Catholics who actually follow their faith, i just get bugged by alot of hypocrites around this holiday.

LOL. I'm the "LEAST" liberal person in the world. I don't hate liberals, I just wish they were all locked up in the loony bin where they belong.

There are hypocrits at every holiday, much more so in this relatively minor one (from the secular perspective). Actually its not even a holiday, its a "day of obligation". We Catholic don't even ask for the day off, and the only evidence to the public is a little dirt on our foreheads. Why the emotional response?

    OK. So you're a conservative-secularist?

Or maybe just a conservative protestant who doesn't like Catholics.

I’m a catholic but don’t really go to church that much except for Christmas and Easter as a family obligation.
